Say I have a question guys. Canada has a parliamentary system, right? Why didn't NDP and Liberals form coalition to stop Harper? I know they tried in 2008 but how come they failed?

That coalition would have included the Bloc, and the fact a separatist party was needed gave Harper what he needed for it to be shot down.

Also that was under Stephane Dion, who was ousted in favour for Michael Ignatieff who would lead the LPC to a horrific defeat in 2011. Ignatieff also lost his seat, Dion actually kept his.

Took me an hour but I was finally able to vote. No one in line but I had a complicated residency but it all got sorted in the end. Really disappointing seeing the NDP taking a beating now. After the BC ndp dropping the ball and now this, I am feeling pretty dejected. If Harper is out I wouldnt be as mad but I am still kind of pissed.

because in all coalitions all over the world, the lesser party becomes the loser while the bigger party gets all the cred

you don't want to be that loser party that latches onto a bigger party then end up suffering even more the next time

Yes, it even happens in countries where there are three or more coalition members. It's always the "larger" partner that takes all the credit.

I've been following this awesome thread all election long, thanks for all the links and opinions.

I'm happy to see this Liberal sweep right now and am very optimistic that a change will happen! Wouldn't hate if a few of those went NDP as that is my traditional party (if you can have one by 30 years old, but lots of Federal elections in my current lifetime).

I'm in Ottawa Centre, and I felt I could easily vote my conscience (liberal) but still expect Paul Dewar to be my representative at election time. I wouldn't be able to sleep, though, if the vote splits and the Conservative walks up the middle (or right flank, as it were) and formed a government. I have voted strategically and it failed in the past when Lawrence Cannon won my old riding in the Pontiac, so I now have a hard time not voting my conscience.

Excited, thought, that this will be a good night.

You will be fine either way. The conservative candidate will only ever get about 20% of the vote in Ottawa centre. Conservatives cannot win this riding, so feel free to vote your conscience!

I don't think the conservatives are going to win a minority anymore unless the conservatives pull a miracle outside of Quebec. I'm calling a minority for the liberals right now with a possible minority in the cards.

Same here. Even though I've traditionally been conservative, I want to see Harper gone. On the other hand, I don't want my government wasting a single cent on anything related to marijuana. Ever.

Marijuana will bring in a lot of money. It wouldn't be a waste of money to legalise it.

If you look at Colorado or Washington, marijuana makes cents. Free market, right?

Well, I want all drugs to be legal, but I guess the enemy of my enemy is my friend and all that. lol

Harper went in HARD about how it would be "undemocratic".

St. John's East: 126 of 188, Libs up by 692.

I think they're going to pull it off.

Wow.

Will they hold any seats outside of Calgary, Edmonton and farmland though?

Liberals have a good shot at a few Calgary seats. NDP may win some Edmonton seats, though at this rate...I'm not betting on any NDP seats right now.

It's only going to get worse now, as we move to a 2 party system since the NDP are as good as dead.
That's over-dramatic, I think.

If things going really bad for them in Quebec, then maybe we can start wondering if they're in trouble. But people were writing off the Liberals right around this time in 2011.

Edit: Hey, Anne McLellan's on CTV. Been years since I've seen her. It's too bad she didn't speak French, because I think she would have been a good leader.

They wouldn't. Marijuana would bring in revenue for the government. See Colorado and Washington State

Chantal Hebert just made a good point. This early Quebec Atlantic riding first signaled the Orange Wave last election... so this could be a sign of Liberal fortunes in Quebec.

Yeah rural Ontario and suburban Toronto (including Scarborough and Etobicoke) will probably all go conservative. God damn it

Gotta keep in mind barriers for ridings in Scarborough changed. Mine has been Liberal it's entire existence, and my bet is with the change, and with the big push on strategic voting, we may see significant change in those Conservative ridings like Scarborough Centre.

Believe.

He's barely containing his excitement about the red wave.

Again, not complaining, but it is very obvious. And I have no idea how anyone can construe the CBC as ever having a conservative bias.
It means more funding for CBC, so of course he's happy.

The second I heard that NDP will support the winning party no matter who, I knew that my friends who voted for him regretted it. What happened to all those attacks aimed at Harper, Mulcair?????????

lmao!

Basically. Both sides were too proud after the Dion attempt failed, and now it looks like the Liberals have no reason to even bother talking to any NDP MPs.
Wow if true. Won't even need to hear from Albertans/BCers if Liberals win Quebec.

Edit: whoops wrong post. Meant to quote the person who talked about that Quebec Island signalling the Orange crush last election.

someone educate me what are the advantages/disadvantages/improvements liberals have..sorry Im paying attention so late.

The Conservatives have knocked the Liberals for having a young leader who wants to run a deficit the first three years (the Liberals say it's the best time to invest in infrastructure/economy/etc. due to low interest rates).

Liberals want to legalize marijuana, propose a voting system reform (hopefully they still do if they get a majority), increase the taxes for the richest 1% and other stuff they've been campaining on.
