I got grudge sucked!
ESPN had our class at 40 I think. Not bad I guess considering Duke only signed 17 kids, and 2 of the better recruits flipped to USC and NW respectively. Still, the best NC player goes to Stanford, and he's a QB

First tragedy, then farce.
You guys ended your season on a high note. Won't be suprised to see you guys finish top 3 in the conference next year. TCU and Baylor are the only relative "locks" in the top 2, but 3-7 are up in the air again

I'm not willing to totally concede this.

Baylor is a paper tiger all the way. They could easily fall this season. Okie St, OU, Kansas St, Texas and WVU could all potentially compete with Baylor if they improve at all from last season.

TCU is losing their entire starting line-backer core. That said, they should still roll.

I think TCU is #1 with a bullet.

I think the rest are up in the air.

TT, Kansas and Iowa State are going to be terribad.

For Texas specifically, I think we have a general upgrade all around with athleticism, but we are losing a lot of starters on defense. Mack was a need for us at DT specifically. Our DBs should be better this season, but young.

Offensively we are supposedly moving to a spread-run offense. I have to think Locksley or Heard will be an upgrade at QB over Swoopes no matter what. O-line needs to improve as well.

It should still be a rebuilding year and our record may not be a lot better (8-9 wins should be the goal, but our OOC is tough), but if our defense can gell by mid-season and our offense can stop giving up points and give our defense some time off the field, I think we'll be well positioned for a 2016 run at the conference.

So UCLA's defensive coordinator announced he was leaving to go to the Falcons shortly after letters of intent were faxed in.

Classy, that staff.

Derek Henry changing his number again, now to #2.

Biggest #2 ever.

:p

This was our #6 a couple years ago. John Jenkins is 6'3" 351. Looked hilarious to see that single digit number on him.

Something similar happened with UNC a while back. IIRC One of their coaches (position coach IIRC, not DC) took a job with the Cowboys the day after signing day. We ended up getting one of their DL signees, and he got a waiver to be able to play immediately because of the coaching situation.

The Texas stuff was basically the result of Murray and Lodge showing up for an UV 10 days ago.

This lead to Daylon Mack and Soso coming on an OV the weekend after that supposedly went especially well.

It became super clear over the last 4-5 days that none of it was going to pan out after Murray recommitted to Aggy last week.

That said, the Murray show appears to have hurt A&M a lot. Since that time-frame their only commitments were getting Murray and Mack, both of whom had been aggy commits for the better part of a year.

They missed at LB and DB entirely. So, their already awful secondary is getting no better any time soon.

It goes further back than the Murray UV. It all begins with Malik Jefferson flipping aggy to the good guys. From then forward, Texas had momentum and stole a number of recruits.

Gatas are all the way up to 23 on rivals now.

Impressive recovery.

It was pretty great, but not all together unexpected. It was looking pretty grim for a while there, but it makes sense considering there was no staff there. Once we got the staff and they started talking to the kids and their parents, some of the heebie-jeebies went away.

Still, it's down from other years and it's going to take some good-ass coaching to get through next year. We missed out on some key players, which is rough. the confidence just isn't there yet.

Malik was never committed to Aggy.

He was considered an Aggy lean at one point, and he certainly gave us momentum, but Mack only scheduled his OV to Texas the day after Murray came on his UV. He decommitted from Aggy the day Malik committed to the good guys, but ruled us out the next day. So I think that wavering had more to do with lost momentum and no DC at A&M than any interest in Texas.

Soso, Mack and Lodge were misses.. but we basically ignored Soso the entire year until very late (and honestly, he may project to a WR at UCLA). Lodge we lost when Charlie didn't retain Wylie as WR coach. Mack never seemed to have actual interest in playing here for whatever reason.

I think Mack was going to LSU after Malik went to Texas, then Chavis moved to A&M and he was more or less going back to A&M at that point until the weirdness with Murray went down.

We should really thank Kyler Murray. The kids dad played for A&M. He is named after their stadium, and his last minute indecision probably opened a lot of doors for us to get in on guys late who had no interest before and cost A&M any LBs and CBs worth having.

Iowa State managed to lose Nealy and Eckby on signing day. Can confirm Jack Trice expansion is in fact a multi-million dollar tire fire.

He was verbally leaning towards A&M, and had maintained so for the previous 6 months. Everybody and their mother thought he was going to aggy.

I'm ecstatic at the trolling the kid is throwing towards collie station. We're going to have the sickest defense in the nation in the next few years, especially with a coach like Strong leading them.

I think your stadium expansion is more or less an attempt to not fall entirely behind the rest of the conference.

The two Kansas schools really need to fix their stadiums ( I know Kanas St is expanding their stadium to seat 51K, but you gotta get North of 65K).. and TCU needs to buy some tarps.

Spring practice starts Friday for Duke

Feb. 28 is the day of the Duke spring game—same day as the Syracuse home basketball game. Will be a "unique" setup, Cut says, w construction

Another year of needing to buy Duke football coaches a calendar.

Our biggest concern right now has to be locking down Vance Bedford. We already had a scare but we can't afford to lose him for the next 2-3 years. He's an alum so the hope has to be he won't be swayed easily.

I we could find a way to lose Shawn Watson that would also be fine by me.

Typically, scheduling like that would help Duke football, as nobody would pay attention to their dumpster fire. but Duke hasn't been duke the last couple of seasons.

I think they just don't care about football, at all.

It's pretty hilarious that even when they're good, nobody cares.

Well, are they "good" good, or just "coastal division" good? Looking around their conference division, the typical powers are all down.

They acquitted themselves fairly well
in losses
against A&M and Arizona State in bowl games these past two seasons. They're pretty good. Not top 15 good, but top 25? Yeah. (Some better play at QB and they legitimately could have been undefeated and in the ACC championship game again this past season, where I think the run would have ended.)

I'm guessing it's in ACC bylaws that they have to field a football team? Because, seriously, good for duke these last few seasons, but historically, they should be Div I-AA at best.

I mean, every conference needs a doormat. And they did win (tie) the ACC championship in 89, and they've played in and even hosted the Rose Bowl. I imagine there are historically worse programs, even if you just want to focus on just the past few decades, since the landscape of sports have changed certainly since WW2.

Just to switch sports, Northwestern plays D1 basketball in the Big Ten and they've never been to the NCAA tournament. Like, ever. Not even once. That's literally unimaginable when you consider that the tournament has been at 64+ teams for 30 years.

I just ask because plenty of Big East teams did not field football teams, like a quarter of their old conference was basketball-only. I'm guessing that's not an option for Duke.

They can't be making money off football, especially if they travel as a doormat.

Nah, if we're lucky our starting QB next season will be either a true or redshirt frosh. They need spring practice!

Even staring defeat in the face, a weekend of football is always preferable to football being months away. I love basketball and it's about to get really really good for the next 3 months, but fuck I hate when football season ends.

I wouldn't know their finances, but they get a hefty payout thanks to ACC media and bowl money. No, they don't typically sell out (or even come close) home games, and their home tickets are inexpensively priced when compared to other programs. But I doubt the program is losing money, particularly once donations are factored in -- indeed, their facilities are currently in the process of being upgraded.

Basketball is, of course, the headliner at Duke, but even then, the money in basketball can only be so much. Their arena, which always sells out, only holds 9300. Media revenues are mixed in with other sports, of course, but the rough split is that it derives 80/20 football/basketball.

As for the conference situation, Big East started as a basketball conference, that's the difference. They added football-playing teams in order to try to remain relevant, and eventually that just proved not to be feasible (as the ACC eventually stole most of the bigger programs), so the remaining basketball-only schools split off and the football schools are now again left to their own devices. The ACC isn't such a basketball only conference (though, that is certainly what is historically known for), and it's already a headscratcher that Notre Dame is in the conference without bringing the football program, though there is a 5 game per year scheduling agreement.

As recently as 2007, Duke was losing $2 million annually on football: http://forums.dukebasketballreport....loses-2-million-yr-Duke-athletics-makes-money

Now, I know that was before the ACC's new shiny TV contract, but it wouldn't surprise me if their football team runs at a deficit. Most football programs do.

MS Shamepaint Recruiting Thread:

1) NSFW
2) Charlie Strong is riding a cookie cake
3) NSFW
4) The Boyd joke has to do with the fact that he would verbally commit to Texas and then post a bunch of pro Aggy stuff constantly. He drove to Austin to announce on live TV and then called the A&M coaches and asked for an LOI. After faxing his LOI in, he called texags and told them that he was delaying his announcement and A&M was still in play.
