Joe Shrapnel and Anna Waterhouse have been tapped to write the sequel to Tom Cruise and Doug Liman’s sci-fi sleeper hit Edge of Tomorrow. The original film, also starring a buffed up Emily Blunt, was a guilty pleasure for many genre fans with its time-bending narrative and stylish chemistry between its two leads. Though a slow opener domestically, it eventually hit $100 million in the U.S.. More importantly, it was a bone fide smash internationally, grossing a further $270 million or so to make the case for a sequel pretty compelling. The original seemed to square up any loose ends pretty efficiently, though, so Shrapnel and Waterhouse will have to be inventive to find a way to get Blunt back in the mix with Cruise. Christopher McQuarrie is attached to direct.

Edit: McQuarrie isn't directing. Doug Liman is

I mean, I loved the movie. I love McQuarrie.

I don't know why everyone involved feels like putting themselves behind the 8-ball on this one, though.

I mean, I'm interested as hell. But it certainly seems like nobody's making it easy on themselves. Especially considering how hard it was to get the first one to fuckin' go.

Great news, that film was surprisingly awesome.

I hope they actually call this one Live, Die, Repeat.

Jack Reacher was a pretty underrated film. Enjoyed it way more than I expected. Cruise and McQuarrie are a good team.

A sequel to All You Need Is Kill or Edge of Tomorrow or Live Die Repeat?

I enjoyed it, not sure I would be up for more of the same though, worked first time.

The Cruise Missile wants a challenge

Wasnt the ending of the first film kind of conclusive?

About as conclusive as it can get

He has lots of connections in the scientific community or something.

Hold up nah

What's the guilty pleasure about? It's just a pretty damn good Sci-fi movie.

I'd really love it if it was a prequel though about Blunt. Title it Angel of Verdun and we're off to the races.

Is this real life?

I fucking love the film but never in my dreams did I think it would get a sequel

Come at it with the right marketing plan and it'll be a hit.

Still wondering where they'll take this considering the ending of the first film.

Yep. I don't think a sequel is needed, but considering how much good will the first film has generated after it was released in theaters, I could see a sequel doing way better.

I mean... I really liked the first one but it always seemed like a one-shot movie to me. No need for sequel or expanded universe.

The third act isn't perfect, but man those last 30 seconds are bloody perfect.
I'm not sure where you go from here.

The marketing for the original did a poor job of selling the film. I only watched it due to recommendations on Gaf and it turned out to be really worth the watch. If they do a sequel it should be an alternative timeline rather than a direct continuation.

He's also doing MI6, no? Guy sure loves working with Cruise.

First movie was surprisingly great. Not sure where they'll go with a sequel but I'm onboard anyway.

Doing a sequel to Edge of Tomorrow is like doing a sequel to Groundhog Day.

Edge of Tomorrow is the only sequel I would accept to Groundhog Day.

Honestly, I'm not overly interested in this. They're trying so hard to make a sequel for this but I'm not sure the demand is there and the first movie ended very conclusively.

It's like trying to fit a square peg into a circle slot.

Maybe Cruise is looking to win Master Chef and he keeps doing the contest over and over again, killing himself with a knife at the finale until he wins.
