Looks like someone at Deadline edited that out, changed it to "sleeper hit" which is also not correct seeing as it never made its money back.

Did it really not make its money back? I thought after international and home video it ended up doing well. I also seem to remember hearing the budget was actually pretty small by summer movie standards

Why?

OK, beside that.

Speaking of Cruise sci-fi vehicles, I wouldn't mind another film in the Oblivion world.

I only watched that recently, surprisingly good. Looks stunning on Blu-ray.

Budget was 170million before marketing/pr, it made around 100million domestically, did better overseas. It broke even at best thanks to international but the poor domestic release stalled it out of the gate. The 25million it made in China helped but it didn't set the world on fire.

It was needing to be #1 with 50million opening weekend to track to a profit, but was #3 with a little under $30. The #1 with 50million went to The Fault in Our Stars.

Home Video helped in terms of word of mouth and getting people to see the movie/realize it's awesome, though, hence why a sequel getting greenlit happened.
Why? Edge of Tomorrow was already better.
The book was a lot different. The overall tone was far more serious and there were not many jokes in general let alone compared to the movies.
The situation was shittier for the humans, the aliens aren't defeated in the end and Rita dies to end the loop and the battle.
I myself really liked the book ending and it actually left the story open for sequels as it wasn't the decisive victory in the movie.

If it gets made, I wonder if the sequel will take a bit of a budget cut. $370M is a decent take, but not exactly great for a film with a $180M price tag.

The sequel would have much better shot at success if they shaved $30-40M off the price of the last one.

"guilty pleasure" ?

It's a legitimately good movie, I was pretty excited to see it in theatres too, since I 'got' what the point was from the trailer (apparently nobody else did?).

Tom Cruise might be the last bankable star Hollywood has left. It is great when he uses that power for good.

I really don't see how a sequel works unless it's a prequel about Blunt. What made the whole concept fun and enjoyable was seeing Cruise evolve into the highly-trained warrior over the repeats.

I don't see how that set-up with Cruise would work, especially because he's already the ultimate soldier, and a new hero would just be a retread of the first movie.

I wonder if they could wrangle a pre-sequel out of it without screwing things up to much. Somehow send cruise back to Verdun and have him train Rita. There was some guy that she watched die over and over, could that be cruise's character somehow? They would have to come up with a plausible reason why she doesn't recognize him in the first film which might be a stretch. Only way I can see this working with the two leads still in it.

fuck yes! was actually wondering a few days ago if theyll be making a sequel as I searched up Tom Cruise on IMDB, loved the 1st 1.

Yeah, I'm not sure how they can pull the setup of Cruise being a complete loser again

I'll never forget the first few times he died, like when he tried to escape by rolling under the Humvee and just getting crushed

Movie was fantastic, hit my sci fi bone dead on man. Fucking loved it. I'll take another even if the ending was pretty conclusive.

No one makes good sci fi anymore, its all wrapped up in superheroes now. So give me this.

edge of tomorrow is one of my favorite films but how do you make a sequel to it. its a very well self contained film and its 'gimmick' would lose alot in a sequel. the film didnt even do well at the box office.

Presumably a sequel would involve the same time-jumping gimmick but are they really going to jump through all those same story hoops again? I enjoyed the movie but a sequel would be pointless, especially with the same character and premise.

A prequel with Emily Blunt's character would make much more sense.

Bleh the first one will not be improved by any sequeling. Loved the first but totally ambivalent about a second.
