I can't even wrap my head around how this is going to work. Other then it being super derivative, predictable in its plot and end game. Either they take the fight to the aliens even though
that power is gone pretty much
. The Aliens come back to kill humans with a bigger force and we repeat things. Or someone gets a hold of this ability and starts to fuck around but that would be fairly uninteresting.

Plus it would have very little or next to zero context to the source material at that point.

The first movie was based on a self-contained light novel, so I skeptical about whether they can make a compelling sequel with original story content

The book was a lot different. The overall tone was far more serious and there were not many jokes in general let alone compared to the movies.
The situation was shittier for the humans, the aliens aren't defeated in the end and Rita dies to end the loop and the battle.
I myself really liked the book ending and it actually left the story open for sequels as it wasn't the decisive victory in the movie.
Rita was an actual God in the book though as in the MC is a complete an utter scrub and in the grand scheme of things remains so, but she is ridiculous.

Premise is really cool and could have couple of more movies based on that. Make it and spin off, reboot, sequel, prequel, whatever, the first one wont stop existing or being good. Just hope it is not Highlander 2 levels of trash.
