State of the market
A big month for Garena's Free Fire helped lift video game content spending higher in July compared to a year ago, while Nintendo Switch 2 drove gains in hardware (while surpassing 2 million units sold along the way).

Software
July video game content spending increased 4% when compared to a year ago, to $4.5B. The increase was driven by growth in the mobile (+7% in July vs a year ago, to $2.3B) and non-mobile subscription (+21%, $0.5B) segments, which offset a 9% drop in spending on Console. Year-to-date spending on non-mobile video game subscription services is now 19% higher than a year ago, at $3.6B.

Hardware
Monthly hardware spending grew 21% when compared to a year ago, to $384M. This is the highest hardware spending in a July month since the $441M achieved in July 2008. Nintendo Switch 2 has now surpassed 2 million units sold in the US life-to-date. It is currently 75% ahead of the unit sales pace set by the original Nintendo Switch.

Nintendo Switch 2 drove July's hardware spending growth. July dollar sales of PS5 hardware fell 47% compared to a year ago, while Xbox Series spending dropped by 69%. Nintendo Switch spending declined 52% year-on-year. Nintendo Switch 2 was the best-selling video game hardware in units and dollars for both July and 2025 year-to-date. PlayStation 5 ranked 2nd across both measures and time periods.

Mobile
Sensor Tower reports the top 10 mobile games by consumer spend in July and the chg vs June as: MONOPOLY GO!, Royal Match, Last War: Survival, Candy Crush Saga, Whiteout Survival, Free Fire (+7), Clash Royale (+2), Kingshot (+3), Township (-2), and Royal Kingdom. "July 2025 was an explosive month, with 7% US consumer spend growth over July 2024 and significant upheaval in the top 10. Perhaps most shocking was the arrival of Free Fire at #6," said Sam Aune of Sensor Tower.

"Garena's shooter has been skyrocketing US revenue since last year and now sits comfortably above Call of Duty: Mobile as the top shooter by US consumer spend. Free Fire is currently running a collaboration with S-tier anime IP Naruto Shippuden," said Aune.

Accessories
July accessories spending fell 8% when compared to a year ago, to $187M. The Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller became the year's best-selling accessory in both units and dollars.

Grounded 2 making it in the top 10, despite being in early access and only on Xbox/PC, *and* launching on Game Pass is pretty impressive.

Death Stranding 2 still MIA on the top 20 of the year.

It's already out of the top 10 monthly.

P pulicat Looks like you were right. DS2 has already gone below Forza in the all-platform chart and is trending downward faster in the PS only chart, by next month it'll be below Forza there too.

But...no one's buying it, right?

It's already out of the top 10 monthly.

P pulicat Looks like you were right. DS2 has already gone below Forza in the all-platform chart and is trending downward faster in the PS only chart, by next month it'll be below Forza there too.
Wasnt our bet about what will sell more between DS2 and MGSD? I'm team DS2 and you're team MGSD? If anything you're looking good on winning.

Yeah, I'm a bit more confident in MGS winning now.

I tagged Pulicat separately cause he got a lot of ridicule from folks in the thread he made about Forza being ahead of DS2 in some PS regional charts.

A 50% drop for the leader of the HD market seems kinda high? This is pre-price increase. Next month will be a bloodbath.

I believe that is shipments, not "sell through". Obviously the price hike was planned so shipping a lot less until the price hike gets announced makes sense.

Should mention that I don't think retailers are honoring the price hike yet. Probally won't until they run out of their existing inventory.

what? It says dollar sales dropped 47%.

All these "video market is doomed" articles based on June spending and now we'll get "video market is bigger than ever" articles based on July spendings, fun

Ds2, for a so called niche game, very much hated by bitter and jealous pc, nintendo, and xbox gamers just because it si not multiplatform at launch, and also by Kojima haters especially in Gaf, and against Nintendo Switch 2 launch period, DS2 has a decent numbers. And it is a ps5 exclusive and the series is known to have long legs. It still sold much better than DS1 at the same period. That suffice, what matters is it is a top contender for game of the year and possibly one of the best game of this generation. Anyway, even Ex33 is not yet on top 20. Ds2 and Ex33 will have legs and will enter top 20 possibly later this year.

The user base of PS5 is around 75M, plus is the big PS exclusive game of the year… There's no excuse, the game flopped hard.

They don't provide sales data iirc. adamsapple adamsapple I need an adult

Correct.

Kepler Interactive (the publisher) is not an NPD/Circana partner, they don't report sales.

It still sold much better than DS1 at the same period.

Not entirely accurate, in the comparable things we can track (the UK physical sales and JP sales), it's behind DS1.

We don't know the complete digital comparison between the two.
