Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 has crossed two million copies sold

If I was Square, I would offer them money to make a Final Fantasy game. If FFX was ever to remade, I would have these guys do like Blooper with Silent Hill 2.

Nah, that would be a waste of their talent and time. Let SE do whatever it wants to do with FF and let these guys continue creating original ideas. We need less recycled games and more personal passion projects being made.

People like to glaze individuals and build cults of personality around them. Shuhei Yoshida is one of these people and it was always bewildering to me.

Same with Phil Spencer or Shawn Layden.

Because Yoshida has done 100x more for the industry than most.

Im in Act III now doing side content before what i think might be the final main mission, and i already promoted this game from GOTY to Game of the Generation. Everething has been an 10/10 for me. Masterpiece.

Exactly. We wouldn't want Square to finally put out a great Final Fantasy game would we?

What SE did, they chose themselves. If they find it within themselves that turn-based/the old formula is worth it again, they'll probably get on it. They allowed a small and extremely passionate team to swoop in and pick up the batton while they were missing in action. I'd rather see this team take on their own personal ideas than being tacked onto another remake or fix the missteps of an existing series. That's up to SE to get done right.

On that note, I'm willing to bet some SE execs, along with Yoshi-P, are feeling a bit bitter about this.

Why some stupid gamers always want studios with a lot of creativity and original projects to work on rotten remakes and IPs ? I'll never ever understand

Well deserved, it was phenomenal game....great story/characters, great gameplay and godtier music.

To put this into perspective Persona 5 took a year and 2 months to reach 2 million. That game has gone on to leg to 7.3 million units.

This game hasn't even met physical demand yet.

15 million lifetime guaranteed

He says a lot of stupid things and I think with Clair Obscur having that "Oh wow" factor that the Golden Age of Square was known for will make him and other members of CBU3 stew in their own juices. They won't learn of course but I wouldn't be surprised if they sat there for days shellshocked and wondering where they went wrong.

Wow nice, congrats 👏👏👏

Does anyone notice that when a game sells well, the developer has no problem talking about units sold 🤔🤔🤔

But when a game sells questionable, they start talking about some bs metric, like pLAyErS, MAU, minutes spent
Anyone notice how people keep saying this but when you have things like this they are completely silent:

Copies sold, player numbers etc are marketing.
Depending on what you are marketing the choice will change. If you are a 3rd party who already got their subscription money then you will go with sold because you are marketing that the game is for sale. If you have a subscription service you will go with 'players' as it is the bigger number and you want to push people to your subscription service.

Fans are happy, the devs have to be ecstatic, and I'd guess the majority of people playing this game love it. I know I do.

Enjoying this game knowing millions of others are doing the same is a big part of what this hobby is all about!

I just hope they'll fix the mandatory upscaling on PC. XeSS, DLSS or TSR only, and no FSR to be seen. What a weird technical choice since the game looks blurry AF.

More people need to experience this RPG.

It's not overselling it to say that this is one of the best RPGs of all time and sits neatly into your fond memories of Chrono Trigger or the best of Final Fantasy and somehow… it sells for less than the standard price.

The real Final Fantasy XVI.

Such a weird naming convention for a franchise.
Final Fantasy XII -> Lost Odyssey -> Claire Obscur: Expedition 33

Final Fantasy XIII, XIV and XV would have been a more logical naming structure, but maybe that's just me.

Same for me, it's my game of the generation and it's definitely in my top 3 games of all time now. I seriously can't think of a game with a better story/ost/art

10 million lifetime minimum! At an average price of $30, that's $300 Million in revenue. For a game that probably cost them $30 million to make. THAT'S INSANE!!!

Makes you wonder how much they would've sold without Gamepass, but I bet their development costs were covered at a minimum. So this is a huge win for them and I can't wait to see what they do next. Loving this game!

Grabbed a physical copy recently. Its getting increasingly difficult to track down one around here. Nearest store with just one physical copy left is >30 miles away. Online stocks seems to steadily deplete too. Every other online vendor here has sold out.

If there's one thing I hope Square takes away from the success of not only this game but also stuff like Baldur's Gate 3 and Elden Ring, it's that their strategy of trying to streamline and dumb down their games to make them more "accessible" and appeal to everyone is outdated and out of touch. A game designed for everyone is usually a game that doesn't truly appeal to anyone, while games like Expedition 33, Baldur's Gate 3 and Elden Ring have enough confidence in their audience to demand more from them, and have achieved great success by doing so.

Rebirth is decent in this regard, but most of their other AAA games feel like they care more about making them accessible to 5 years old and 70 years olds than appealing to their core audience.

Dev costs covered by Game Pass? I saw an estimate for Clair Obscur's dev to be in the $10-50M range. I'm thinking Game Pass' deal didn't hit $10M...then again, I don't think we have many hard numbers on what Microsoft doles out for GP.

I couldnt be happier we got this game or for the devs, btw.

Who would have thought there was a burgeoning market for turn based RPGs without the cringe anime aesthetics and tropes (I knew this).

I hope to see more of it. From a character model perspective, they nailed the in between as well. Western studios keep making characters ugly. Asian devs keep making very attractive women. Appreciated, sure, but not every female character needs to be a 10/10 wearing provocative clothing. I like Lune and Sciel in this game because they're just naturally attractive character designs. Not over the top constantly reminding me "the devs did this intentionally" with absurd ass shaking walking animations or jiggle physics. I appreciate that Lune and Sciel are conventionally attractive without stealing away from a narrative scene. A game like Stellar Blade I find myself too often not observing what else is going on in a scene because my ape brain takes over.

The streamlining has to go...it's one of the main reasons I quit XIV altogether. A game for everyone is a game for no one.

Still more logical than the Kingdom Hearts naming scheme!

There's a lot of Lost Odyssey in this game, kinda make me want to play it again.
