Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 reaches 500k copies sold in a day (UP: 1 million copies in 3 days)

I'd assume the budget was under $40 Million. $50 million max if you included marketing.
From your analysis and judging from how many sales the game is getting along with positive word of mouth spreading all over the internet and real life, I can easily see this badboy selling around 3 million copies. After considering development costs and a thirty percent cut from Steam and PS Store, this will guarantee a profit for the studio, allowing them to fund production for a new game. 8D

500K is not bad for a single day, I wonder what Oblivion Remaster did? Using Steam CCU numbers and comparing the two, given their similar platform availability, maybe 1.5m-2m?

I've never wanted a game to financially succeed more than this game. I want to see this studio deliver more similar games in the future. The universe they've created here is incredible and the team 100% deserves it.

I went from "I might check it out" to "Best JRPG game since Chrono Trigger & FF7". Easily my GotY.

And don't forget the Microsoft GamePass money they got.

Funny how devs who are proud of their sales numbers and don't try to hide them, actually announce the sales and not some nebulous "players reached" metrics like Ubisoft.
Obsiously this game is better than anything Ubisoft has developed in the last 10 years, so they have all reason to be proud.

Game is incredible. It will have legs and will sell millions. Im not a huge turn based fun, but man the combat in this game is fun af and so satisfying. Other turn based games i tend to avoid as much combat as possible, in this game however im looking forward to it :D

Also the OST is god tier, like its the best OST in years

I think it will have legs too.

Marking it now, this could be an evergreen.

Low initial price, critical darling that will "come out of nowhere" for normies. The Final Fantasy game we have wanted since FFX.

It's gonna go folks. Moderate success for a long time = major success. They could be making an HBO series out of this in 7 years. Lighting in a bottle, plain and simple.

Combat reminds me of how squall could fire the gunsword if you timed R1 perfectly on melee attacks or how the limit breaks were setup in FFVIII but much more fleshed out. That is one of my favorite mechanics in a FF game and reason I love FFVIII(Zell's limit break). This game is fucking it.

Fully deserved, and I'm sure it will get many many more as word of mouth and reviews keep coming out. I think NOBODY expected this, not even the devs.

What a wondrous game coming out of nowhere, it sure looked good and seemed interesting, but to get such a game like this to crush all your expectations and trounce its way up the mountain of them to the apex, whew!

I was severely underestimating Clair Obscur when I thought it will be a nicely looking, interesting but clunky 70-85 AA. Turns out that just after playing the prologue I get the certainty it's smearing its dick over the faces of decades long franchises and superbly financed studios just like that.

I love being proved so fucking wrong like this. 👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻😎

Devteam is 30ppl, im sure with 500k sales already game gonna make at least 2m total by the end of 2025, so big success for dev studio, hell those 500k sold copies probably already made game more profitable than 5m sold copies would make AC:S :P

Man sony fanboys must be confused. A game pass game selling well. IconEra is tripping balls now lmao. Good for them. The game is great, though i admit, its def not for everyone

Wait that place still exists.

*checks*

Yup its like 10 dudes circle jerking over how great anything Playstation does is.
Their Clair thread had like 12 posters.....seriously, this might be game of the year 12?
I closed the tab when I went into the Marathon thread, its literally just ethomaz ethomaz talking to himself.......im surprised James Sawyer Ford James Sawyer Ford isnt on that site.

I bought oblivion on a whim, started it, played past the prologue and did some starting quests, but in the end turned it of to play this. It's fantastic so far.

I sold my Series X and ps5 last year btw and am playing on ps5 pro. I don't know why anyone would be angry about this game doing well.

Really happy for the team. I haven't jumped in yet because of Oblivion, but this is my next game.

Same.

If Oblivion hadn't released when it did, I would be playing this at this moment. Just a matter of which came out first, but an easy 100% that I'll be playing this as well.

Well I'm doing my part and just bought it. It will do just fine despite gamepass and Oblivion, as deserved for a passion driven, sincere and skillfully done project.

"Today more than 100 millions baguettes were consumed worldwide as Clair Obscur : Expedition 33 take the lead as the world premiere baguette true first frpg" !!!

Why i would buy a game if is available on Gamepass? Maybe for the second run i going to buy it, to support the devs. But not everybody is going to do the same…
Exactly. Games don't sell on Xbox. People just wait for gamepass. If this was only available on Xbox it'd be a financial failure. Glad it's selling well because it's one of the best in recent years

I hope this makes more devs realise that turn based isn't dead and not every single RPG needs to be action based with enormous bloated game worlds.

Good on them for using actual sales as a metric. I wouldn't be surprised if the "player" count was well over 1 million since it's on gamepass.

"Not bad"? It's fantastic. It'll probably keep selling for a while too. I wouldn't be surprised if it became at the same time a cult classic and a big commercial success like Nier Automata.
I'll at least add 1 to that metric once I tire of Oblivion.

This is a niche game. The type of game that for 25 years most people have associated with PS consoles. It's no surprise to me that it's sold well despite being on gamepass. Xbox has far fewer consoles out there than PS5, and outside of the hard-core gamer who plays dozens of games on gamepass a year, there is probably minimal audience for this type of game there. I'm willing to bet the sales are 90/10 (or even 95/5) in favor of PS/Steam versus Xbox - both sales and gamepass.

I pre-ordered a while ago for PS5. But when the positive word of mouth started coming in decided to double dip and bought on Xbox as well. I might be the lone Xbox sale. Even if I end up not liking the game it's worth it to me to support a Dev creating a game like this in the current era of slop we live in.

Congratulations. It is like what happened to Stellar blade and Split fiction, just small team, small budget but a big hit, profitable, and a fan base growing.

I only watched one cutscene in a stream where both of the characters were actually talking like normal human being about the fucked up shit they just went through and I was...extra sold.
Game looks phenomenal.

omg yes, THIS. Its so refreshing to play a game with natural dialogue

Oh my goodness, yes. This game has some of the most natural dialogue, writing, conversations, and inflections of any game I've played in years. It's right there with Indiana Jones.

OT: For a "AA" game that was made by 30 odd people to have sold over half a million copies in just 2 days is insane. This is the game that people have been crying for for years, different, shakes up the status quo, and is oozing passion. The fact that it's on GamePass, and Microsoft seems to have supported Sandfall in the making of E33 is mighty as well.

Beautiful job to the devs. Massive congrats!!

Awesome. I'm about to buy it on PS5 physical just to support it even though I have it on Game Pass.

This year has really been something else with smaller/"indie"/AA games. They're completely taking over. There's this, The First Berserker Khazan, Blue Prince, and on VR a game called Ghost Town just released. They're all amazing games in their own way and any could be in a lot of top 10 lists at year end. I guess Split Fiction could be included too. I'm probably missing something else as well but 2025 has been a crazy year so far for games coming out of nowhere.

Yes, while Xbox Game Pass cannibalizes the sales of their own games, it promotes the sales of all others.
