I don't think it's a conspiracy theory to assume that Supercell is engineering the matchmaking in a way that "encourages" people to spend money. They are in it to make money and they are very good at it. The game made $80 million last month.
That doesn't mean people can't get good at the game and have a great time with it (it's super fun), but it's naive to think it isn't finely tuned to regularly try to frustrate you into paying for cards or to open chests.
I think the matching in this game is too fast worry about any of that. It just makes no effort to ensure there is a "fair" match besides trophy count, so you will be matched with people that just got a surge due to paying to win or random magical chest, or people that are high ranked but just got pushed down due to losses, and occasionally up and comers below your level
I actually like the system because it's just another variable that changes the matches
