As a massive Punk mark who has weened himself off the product ever since his departure I was hoping to see something manifest on tonight's show.

Pretty much. The Rock whined on Twitter about how Axel was getting a raw deal, so WWE repackaged him as Axel, gave him the IC title and stuck Paul Heyman with him and he didn't get over.
nah, Judy Bagwell on a pole match is still the pinnacle.
Axel was the one who trained with Rock for his WM matches.
All I remember from Rock's WM matches against Cena was just exchanging finishers because they couldn't do anything else.

I just watched the first one and Steve Austin said he had 5 moments planned for that match.
Maybe they don't practice, but they do plan.

They ad lib most of the basic stuff during the match, but 99% of the spots are planned. It's at indie level where they plan the whole thing beforehand.

For those that didn't watch the Austin/McMahon live podcast on the Network, some highlights about Punk:
Other odds and ends:
- Vince apologized for Punk's termination papers coming on his wedding day. Said it was a terrible mistake and basically blamed it on bureaucracy problems.
- He would like to work with Punk again some day and believes they will eventually get back together.
- Has not listened to the AOW podcast, but was told about it and believed that Punk will probably regret saying some of the things he did in retrospect, that there were communication issues, that Punk often had inadequate communication skills.
- No mention of the medical issues Punk brought up.
- Favorably compared him with Austin multiple times.
Other odds and ends:
- Believes that no one since Cena has tried to grab the brass ring.
- Said that the issues with the current roster stem from being Millennials, which Vince believes makes them afraid of failure and thus less likely to try as hard.
- Specifically mentioned Cena, Wyatt, Rollins, Ambrose, and Reigns as young stars doing well who are going to be important to the future of the company.
- Can't figure out what is missing from Cesaro. It might be because he's Swiss. They're still going to work on him, though.
- Relayed how much he truly, truly loved pushing people into his pool during the 80s/90s
- Truly believes he is not out of touch
- Truly believes he listens to the fans and gives them what they want. Austin pressed him on that many times and the look on his face clearly showed he didn't believe Vince at all.

- Doesn't believe a lack of competition has hurt the company, because he views everything on TV as competition and they still do strong ratings every week.
- Doesn't think Brock or Sting need to be on TV very much to be kept as special attractions. Said it is likely that Sting will be at Wrestlemania.
- Austin pressed him hard on Randy Savage being inducted into the Hall of Fame. Vince gave a definitive yes, although could not say if it would be next year.
- Completely believes that WCW's philosophy was to hurt everyone else, while Vince's philosophy was always to help himself.
- If WWE is the only place in town and you're afraid of losing your job by pissing someone off, then you better not piss anyone off.

Compares him with Austin? WTF! Austin is a freaking legend. There is no comparison. One is one of the greatest wrestlers of all time who changed the industry while the other is just a mediocre wrestler with mic skills no one would have given a shit about in the attitude era. Was Vince high when he compared Punk with Austin?
I didn't mean to say he said Cena was young talent. Shield and Bray are who he singled out as top and important young talent, while Cena is the most important in general. Those are the only 5 he singled out by name in a positive manner. Austin brought up the poor booking of Cesaro. Vince said he was great in the ring but was missing something. It seemed to imply that besides the 5 listed, he thinks the roster either aren't trying hard enough or aren't over enough. Certainly didn't think it was from the shitty booking, which Austin really went in on and Vince breezed past it.
That would include guys like Orton, Ziggler, the Usos, Rusev, Sheamus, and so on. Divas weren't mentioned at all. No names from NXT were mentioned. Bryan wasn't brought up by either man.
In the sense of backstage personalities and work ethics, he said they were quite similar to each other. Over all he was very positive about Punk and believed the issue really came down to communication problems on both sides and how there isn't someone like Jim Ross to broker a deal between the two like he did for Austin and Vince.
Oh, he also said it was his decision to end the streak. He felt there would never be a time where someone was as hot as Brock coming into it and would be able to parlay it into something as big coming out of it. He also called Taker by his real name, which was weird as fuck.

What was Punk's most mediocre match?
Seriously. They really should give SMACKDOWN back to Paul Haymen so he can turn it back into RAWs rival again. It was mentioned on more occasions than anything else, what Haymen did to Smackdown was something that no one from WWE management could ever do, and it was Stephanie conflict with Paul Haymen that caused the side-shift to eventual "side-dumping" of the talented guy. If they let Paul Haymen have full reins of the show together with some responsibility of budgeting, who to have on there and so on, then that would truly be best for business as the entire corporation would be better off and we'll have much better products. Unfortunately, politics runs rapid in that company so I guess Paul wouldn't want to deal with that madness again, and stick to keeping things simple with his current role.

Yeah. I'm getting the impression that Game4life doesn't like Punk in general. For me, I think Punk is brilliant and his match with Brock Lesnar at Summerslam could not be faulted as he had amazing chemistry with that beast of a guy and who ever he works with. Yes, he may not be the exact level of Steve Austin, but one thing you are sure to get from Punk is an awesome match that puts the audience including myself on the edge of our seats.

i don't watch wrestling these days, and have rarely done so since the early-mid 2000's(I did get briefly re-interested because of Punk) but I'm fascinated by the more behind the scenes stuff, the documentaries and threads like this.
Talking and listening about wrestling is just way more interesting than actually watching it.

I give both Austin and McMahon a lot of credit for having a real interview and not dancing around the stuff everyone wanted them to talk about.
It does seem pretty disingenuous to say that sending the termination papers on his wedding day was some kind of oversight though. Don't believe that for a second. One of the most surreal moments of the whole thing was Austin plugging Colt Cabana's podcast right in front of Vince's face when Cabana is supposedly on the shitlist. Hilarious stuff.

To be fair I don't see many good workers in WWE like in the 90s. A lot of them are poor on the mic like Bryan. Or just have boring matches like Wyatt.

None of this has any relation to McMahon's claim that nobody has tried to reach for the brass ring.
There should not be a "THE" top guy, there should be a Rock and a Stone Cold, a Goldberg and a Sting, an Undertaker and a Shawn Michaels.
So, there shouldn't just be Cena or someone else, there should be Cena AND whoever the fuck.
