COMICS! |OT| April 2014. Truly, there is no shame in continuing to read awful comics.

I recently found a trade (I think it's the first one) of the 1990s version of Solar: Man of the Atom (Phil Seleski). It's interesting to hear that the character is being brought back, though I haven't actually read the one I have yet.

I'm trying to decide what I want to get from Instocktrades. I'm sort of torn between a) getting multiple manga volumes of series that partly own such as 20th Century Boys, Blade of the Immortal or Vagabond, b) multiple trades of something like Lucifer or Gotham Central, or c) Absolute or Omnibus editions of something + one trade or manga volume.

Hey, so did all those people who bought the Planetary omnibus finish (or start) reading it? 'Cause that series is damn good and is making me dig further into Warren Ellis' stuff. But not his interviews or anything, because he comes off as a bit of a redbull chuggin' dick.

Amazing X-Men is pointless, ESPECIALLY now that Kyle and Yost are taking it over. Marvel, apologize immediately and cancel that trash.

Well damn,, so this may be something I need to consider dropping? lol They take over at #8,, I guess the least I can do is give em an issue or two..? (I know nothing about these writers)

Bendis'ing characters from the 60's in terrible tween romance just shy of sparkling effects for the Twilight audience aint nothing to bro out over, bro.

Getting back to some core Claremont X-Men fun and everyone not being a cunt to each other? That's the good shit. Now with 99% less bondage subtext.

I have no fear Yost will do a good job. Hell, he even made me give a nanosecond of not hating NuNova in the recent New Warriors. Thats the work of A WIZARD.

Regardless of his Clapton-esque origins, Nu Nova is a delightful addition to the MU, especially in the hands of Duggan.

I just realized there are at least 4 different "X-Men" titles running right now. Which is the best out of the bunch?

Don't hate on Miles, guys. ;_;
All-New X-Men: time-displaced original X-Men, plus X-23! Crossover with Uncanny! Crossover with GotG! Crossover with everything Bendis, leading to the next X-Men event!

Uncanny X-Men: Cyclops the fugitive murderer revolutionary leader out to save mutants! S.H.I.E.L.D. the evil jerks out to oppress them! Conspiracies! Crossed arms gang signs!

Amazing X-Men: the original "New" X-Men reunited! Swashbuckling demon pirates! Red versus blue Bamfs! Camping trips and Wendigos! Maybe even baseball! All those fun things the X-Men used to do!

X-Men: lady X-Men, doing their own thing! Vampire Jubilee, an unwed teenage mother! Sentient viruses and nanotechnology! Clashes over leadership and philosophy! Babies! Lesbians!

Wolverine and the X-Men: school's in session again! Quentin Quire teaching classes! Phoenix powers! Time-traveling Cable wannabes! About to lose Wolverine, but the title is probably staying the same!

All-New X-Factor: Corporate sponsored superhero shenanigans! Peter David shenanigans! Gambit doing sexy things! (...Okay, I haven't given this a look so I don't really know what it's about. Someone else do this one.)

X-Force: ...Yeah, I got nothin'. Marrow's back, remember her? Pink hair, bone knives sticking out of her body, was a character in MvC2? Psylocke and Fantomex are on the team, too. So's Cable.

there was no reason Amazing X-Men had to be five issues. Three at the most. In the middle are three issues of the X-Men being split up, fighting demons, and getting back together again, which is essentially just busy work to give the impression of something happening between acts one and three. The Firestar subplot is never convincing, and Northstar just seemed way out of character, stepping all over Nightcrawler's bombastic headstrong hero schtick.

But Yost and Kyle are here, so abaddon hope. I think I'm just not gonna buy any X-Men books for a minute. Gillen left, Remender left, Aaron left, Bendis team books are Bendis team books, Kyle/Yost suck, Wood is crazy boring, X-Force is lol, WATXM was dropped real quick...

I guess there's always Uncanny Avengers

The only reason Claremont's run was so good was because of the everlasting shadow of bondage and tasteful perversion. Without it, you have some by-the-numbers, uninspired crap.

I'm mid way through Battle of Atom and I am really enjoying the nonsense. But I have to ask without spoilers I suppose is there a reason Deadpool is in this he has done essentially nothing.

I picked up three issues of his X-men run and holy shit, Brian Wood must be the most boring popular writer today. Between the Massive, Xmen Alpha and Omega, and Xmen, this dude is dominating the boring books field like its his job.

Which is odd, because I loved Demo and Northlanders and Local.

Cyclops is a dickhead right?

A Chaos Magic infused Giant Wanda Sentinel hunting down and killing Cyclops.

This shit writes itself.

Marvel doesn't know why half of its characters are in its event books. They're all piebald and then shoehorned into whatever is going on whether it works or not because who cares you're going to their movies .

Man, tell me about it. I thought Rafa's alias Cullen Bunn was doing the dullest damn superhero books in the business(Wolverine, Venom, Captain America And, Avenging Spider-Man...all sleep-inducing), but you could probably solve insomnia nationwide give them half a dozen Wood X-Men issues to read.

For those not clued in to the Yost/Kyle hate that gets thrown about...

Back in 2004, following Grant Morrison's run on New X-Men, Marvel launched a new series (also titled New X-Men, then New X-Men: Academy X) that spun out of the decision by Cyclops and Emma to re-open the Xavier school and begin teaching new students. They recruited a whole bunch of new students, split them up into teams with mentors, and then sort of pitted them against each other in a competitive learning environment. Each team had its own color-coordinated uniforms, and a mentor who was a current or former X-Men team member: the most prominent among them were the "New Mutants" squad led by Dani Moonstar, the "Hellions" squad led by Emma Frost, the "Alpha" squad led by Karma, and the "Paragon" squad led by Rahne. Each squad had an average of about six members, and given that I only just listed about half the squads that adds up to A LOT of new faces running around. So naturally, the series tended to focus on certain standout characters, and although nearly everyone got their "moment" it became fairly clear that some of these new mutants were more popular than others.

When M-Day happened, and Scarlet Witch wiped out the abilities of a vast majority of the mutant population, it meant that a sizable chunk of the Academy X roster would be affected, and when Marvel brought in Yost/Kyle as writers they were given the opportunity to clean house. As it happens, the students left unaffected by M-Day happened to be the more popular or interesting ones (with some exceptions), and after some tearful goodbyes the now depowered students were loaded onto a bus and sent back to their families.

And then a rocket attack blew that bus up, killing them all.

Why is Gambit never in any of these new books sans the shitty X-Factor book. They should put him in All new.

You know a book is shit when even I drop it from my pull. Not even Messi quality.

I had wondered why everyone hated Yost. It seemed pretty weird considering the quality of his Scarlet Spider and Superior Spider-Man Team-Up stuff nevermind him writing the only redeeming thing of X-Men Evolution as well as being head writer on the majesty that was the Earth's Mightiest Heroes cartoon.

But then this is the thread where people refuse to read Superior Foes because of some sort of brain damage epidemic so OH WELL EH.

Is there a lot of white space in Superior Foes issues?

I didn't write anything on the stuff I picked up last week, I just realized.

Moon Knight 2
Black Widow 5
Punisher 4

All awesome. Moon Knight 2 just felt... well, very Ellis. I mean, it's pretty much Ellis being Ellis.

"It was the banks, they won, life sucks."

But I loved Spector's sole line...
I'm not real.

Black Widow still hasn't fully grabbed me, but it's worth it for the art. It still feels a bit too somber, but I like it.

Punisher 4 was awesome. I think Gerads and Edmondson are killing it in LA. I love this Frank.

While nothing will match Moon Knight's adaption of the printer ink saving economics route to comic arting (which I didn't mind when its funky cape bleed in stuff!), the main character of Superior Foes also throws white boomerangs and they were even used as panel cutaways in a recent issue! So theres that!

I looked at my roomates copy of Punisher and every page felt like Punisher headshotting someone to the point that it felt like Frank considered it a personal affront if any bullet he put into a guy didn't exit the back of his head. I recall one panel in particular that was like three headshots in a row, with what looked like copy pasted exit splatter. :x

Dude, I love X-Men books and even I dropped it. Holy shit was it dull. It's a shame, Monet deserves better. I was going to hang on until the next story arc, but I couldn't.

Well, their New X-Men was the pits, yes, but Academy X was pretty shit too. I don't care about them there.

My problem with Kyle & Yost comes from their torture porn X-Force comic and their irrational hatred of Emma Frost and any kind of independence, willpower and intellect she has. These are the same hacks that had her sobbing in the fetal position for the entirety of that godawful Necrosha storyline while Cyclops literally dragged her around by the hair.

Their emotionless piece of shit creation, X-23 spent every single one of her storylines being burnt up, torn apart, beat up and tortured. "Every" doesn't mean most, it means every single one. The 20th time you see a 16 year old tied up with a running chainsaw being shoved into her midsection is 20 times too much.

Kyle & Yost are not even garbage-tier, they are industrial-waste-tier. They make Chuck Austen look like F. Scott Fitzgerald.

The Gary Stu and Mary Sue super-relationship that Bendis dreams are made of is clearly Mile Morales and the time-'I'm not a Rogue fill-in!!'-chick from the Uncanny X-Men. Freeze time, zap poke. The entire universe worf'd before tea-time.

Wolverine And The X-Men isn't even that good, verging on kinda shit I mean holy fuck if you're gonna call out Bendis on character assassination you can't praise Latour in the same sentence when #1 has angsty Quentin, Idie goofing around, and Fantomex fucking feeling guilt. Like, how the fuck do you get it so fucking wrong.

Here's my Actual Objective Assessment of the quality of the X-Books

All-New X-Men: Not Shit, got all the crazy soap-opera nonsense you'd want from an X-Book, even going IN SPAAAAAAACE for the latest crossover because that's how crazy it gets

Uncanny X-Men: More Bendis, in which Cyclops does not fuck around. Tends to be one of the best looking books on the shelves thanks to a great roster of idiosyncratic artists like Bachalo, Irving and now Rudy. Fucking great.

Amazing X-Men: Aaron does his funny cool over-the-top crazy fun time adventure, but a) tries to salvage fucking Azazel of all things b) leaves.

X-Men: Huge bummer because I would love a good female led team book that was a) not boring b) not written by a fucking creep

Wolverine and the X-Men: Piss, as stated earlier. Was kinda decent under Aaron despite that terrible fucking circus arc and all of Avengers Vs. X-Men. Is not even that anymore.

All-New X-Factor: oh man corporate sponsored superheroes guess what the corporation is evil how surprising oh and all that good dialogue you like reading in PAD's comics is gone fuck you

X-Force: It's the weirdo international assassin thriller book for weirdoes. I like it because I'm a weirdo. Got loads of weirdo things that annoy non-weirdoes, but that I find pretty interesting. Art is kinda shit though.

Speaking of Northlanders, are they going to put out an omnibus or something? It's not a long series and a few of the tpb volumes are out of print at this point.

I imagine deluxe hardcovers like DMZ?

Lost to Bendis this thread is. You all deserve Fear Itself 2, 3, 4, and 5 for your sins.

Quentin was getting pretty angsty towards the end of Aaron's run because he was losing his childish identity and having to find his new way even when he mindread his future self, dunno whats the probs over Idie, and yeh, Fantomex is dead fucking guilty over tons of stuff from Remender X-Force days. Ignore the shit follow up runs where he's just goofy SEX ME PSYLOCKE, LE ROBBERIES shit. At least all the new kids on the Wolverine side have actual identities and aren't all just the same Bendisite in different skin/make-up. Kids from the sixties talking like 2005 OC characters is TOTES GOOD WRITING Y'ALL.

It's because I'm having a hard time getting over the point that Nick Spencer has written a comic that I'm supposed to read and it's good. I can't get myself to part with my cash for that pleasure.

Parallax

best seen in the classic "Shadow of the Beast"
Peter Parker 616 is the best Spiderman. Followed by Ben then Miguel.

Or Cyclops. Even though Cyclops was right!

lucky. but even then, given time, that will be forgiven too. look at tony after civil war, and reed post ragnarok. that shit isnt even brought up

But it's totally funny how every time Hank seems to be on a road to redemption Marvel finds a way to take a shit on him

Magneto is the worst offender.
How many people has he killed? Hundreds? Thousands?

Yet he is still one of the 'good guys' half the time.
