Are you looking for more recent stuff? I think the most critically acclaimed Marvel books over the past year or two and ones I'd personally recommend are:

Hawkeye - Fraction (ongoing)
Daredevil - Waid (ongoing)
Thor God of Thunder - Aaron (ongoing)
Wolverine and the X-Men - Aaron (ongoing)
Uncanny X-Force - Remender (recently finished)

This is good advice indeed. I'm a big Marvel fan and all of the above are great. I'm mostly into X-Men related titles. Of all of the ones listed above Wolverine and the X-Men is probably the weakest but still good. Mike Allred and Matt Fraction's FF is really great stuff and underrated, a bit left of field so not necessarily to everyone's tastes.

Old Man Logan was ok, but I felt it was anticlimactic, they could have made it much much longer and gone into more detail and fleshed out the world more, but then this is a problem with a lot of comics. The art is great though!
If you want some serious and badass X-Men reading then I'd recommend you read the Messiah Complex, Messiah War and Second Coming crossovers. They are continuity heavy but worth it, reminiscent of the good ol' days of X-Men crossovers like Xcutioners song.

If you are into more serious/realistic comics and want them grounded in the Marvel Universe, then any of Brubakers recent work is going to blow you away, like his run on Daredevil, Captain America and Immortal Iron Fist.

Just re-read the original post/request about complete story lines, sadly not lot is self contained anymore, which can be a total pain. Two moderately self contained titles are Young Avengers originally by Heinberg and Cheung is great and Runaways by BK Vaughan. Both of which are kind of self contained...kind of.

It does not have to be recent. I guess anything in the last two decades that is a complete story.

If that's the case I would check out the following, all are relatively self-contained. Note I'm sure there is awesome DC stuff out there but I haven't followed DC too closely recently, need to rectify that sooner or later:

Marvel:

Ultimate Spider-Man - Bendis (ongoing but start from issue 1 and stop whenever)
New X-Men - Grant Morrison
Astonishing X-Men - Joss Whedon
Immortal Iron Fist - Fraction
The Ultimates - Millar
Runaways - Vaughn

Non-Marvel

Y The Last Man - Vaughn
Invincible - Kirkman (ongoing but start from issue 1 and stop whenever)
Sandman - Gaiman
The Walking Dead (ongoing but start from issue 1 and stop whenever)
Fables - WIllingham (ending soon, ongoing)

The new 52 got me back into comics. Does that make me a bad person :(

Not at all. Why would you think that? The entire point of New 52 was to bring people on board. The unfortunate hipster additude that some non DC readers have adopted isn't related to New 52, outside of your fringe Wally/Donna/Stephanie Superfans, but behind the scenes stuff.

Reboots/Crisis' vs. Marvel Time/Handwaving are just two different ways to handle the fact that you have to clean house every once in awhile. Both ignore parts of their backstory or events that couldn't have happened in the current status quo.

As always just love the comics you love.

I only know rage.

I miss reading Green Lantern books but i don't want to buy Green Lantern books because they are always headed for bad crossovers. Xo.

REMINDER: I'm planning to have the January OT go up sometime Wednesday, so you have four days left to get in votes for December's "Champions" winner.

uqwNqxS.png

Here's How It Works
In the last week of the month (or earlier, if you're confident about your choices), any GAF member can send me a private message with their personal picks for the three best single issues released that month, from any publisher. These picks should be arranged in order of rank -- first, second, and third place -- and each ranking will be worth a specific point value. A first place ranking for a comic is worth 5 points; a second place is worth 3 points; a third place, 2 points. Then before next month's COMICS! OT goes live, I'll tally the results and point values from each ballot, and post the top three overall winners in the next OP as last month's, GAF-approved, best of the best. Then, maybe at the end of the year, we'll have a showdown between the year's top finishers or something similar.

A Sample Ballot
This is an example of how a sample ballot submitted by you might look. You don't have to use this formatting but I do ask that, however you send it to me, you are CLEAR on which comics you are voting for and in what order they are ranked.

Average GAF Member said:
1st Place: "Super-Fun Team Adventures" #14 (Mystery Comics; story by Jack Johnson, art by John Jackson) [worth 5 points.]
2nd Place: "Children's Bedtime Stories, Only With Nudity and Cursing" #69 (Happy Puppy Publishing; story by Jane Doe, art by John Doelner) [worth 3 points.]
3rd Place: "Grimdark, Extreme, and McDarkerson" #474 (Amazing Comics; story & art by Smitty Smithengen) [worth 2 points.]

The Voting Rules
1. Only single issues released that month are to be considered for voting; no trade collections, and no "just caught up" considerations for issues released one/two/however many months ago. Sorry if this excludes you from the voting process, trade-only readers and mail-order folk. I didn't see any other way.
2. Each GAF member is allowed one ballot, and once that ballot has been cast you are done for the month. If an issue comes out and you think it's the best comic you've ever read or will ever read, but you already cast your vote the week before, that's too bad. In other words, there are no take-backs so VOTE THOUGHTFULLY.
3. Three comics per ballot, and no more. You could send me a list of the ten best comics that month, with full paragraph summaries on why you ranked them in what order; but in the end, I'm only going to tally points for the top three and ignore the rest. You CAN pick just one book as the best that month... but that one vote is still worth only 5 points.
4. No ties on the ballots, please. You have to pick three comics as the best that month, and you have to rank them "1st, 2nd, 3rd" so that I can assign points to each. If you're torn between two issues of two different series as the best that month, and you can't decide which one you loved more than the other, TRY.
5. To make things a bit easier on me when it comes to making the OP, I'm establishing a deadline for casting ballots of 6pm Eastern Standard Time on the last day of the month. You can cast your ballot at any time during the month that you wish; however once that deadline has passed, any ballots sent to me will be ignored.
6. Again, to make things easier I would prefer that your votes be cast via private message sent to me, rather than through an open post in the OT. In addition to keeping the voting process a secret, using the PM method means I won't have to search through thread pages for someone's vote posted as an afterthought to an unrelated discussion.

Failure to comply with any of the above rules MAY result in your ballot getting thrown out.

Other rules and stipulations may follow, but for now we'll roll with these for the first round and see how it goes. Have fun voting!

Thanks for the suggestions. I think I'll start with Ultimate Spiderman.

Awesome. One of my top favorite comic book runs of all time. You should be able to pick up the trade paperbacks pretty cheap. I own the omnibus and it's fantastic. Hopefully they print vol 2 soon.

Sidenote comicbookresources.com (cbr) puts together a poll for its readers annually for the best comic book runs of all time. Good place to start and a thorough read if you are looking for some additional recommendations. Here are the 2012 results, I couldn't find a complete synopsis for 2013 but I doubt there would be major shakeups at the top of the list:

Damn, it was a tough one this month. Had to leave Velvet #2 and an excellent issue of Dark Horse Presents off my list.

Don't forget when voting, Six Gun Gorilla Heads, that SGG #6 dropped early this month!

They've only done it for 2008 and 2012.

Locke & Key: Alpha #2 was a beatiful sendoff to one of the best original series in years.
I hope someone else besides me votes for it...

Anybody reading the current volume of Thunderbolts? Saw the preiview of No Mercy with Ghost Rider and I like the look of it so might wanna pick it up when it hits.

I haven't read three yet, its in my STACK. I will give Bunny props if she pulls it off. She certainly has a better chance with this book than ever making Captain Marvel compelling.

I liked the early issues of her current Captain Marvel book. Once they got beyond the Death Bird stuff, though, the book seemed to take a dive.

You might like the current Red Lanterns and New Guardians. They seem to be striking out on their own.

I'm tempted to email dcbs to add the Green Lantern/ Red Lantern #28 flip book thing but it's probably best not to get involved again. The Green Lantern franchise is too needy. Avengers is getting that way too now with Avengers World.

Avoid Way's tenure on the book.
Since Soule took over it has been a great read and the upcoming arc with Ghost Rider is going to follow up on X-Factor's Hell on Earth War
With Guido in charge of hell.

If I were voting Six Gun Gorilla #6 would probably be at the top. Haven't read enough books that were published in December to really put anything else on there. I'm still catching up on the vast majority of my comics :(

Comicbook GAF, is Superior Spider-Man any good? Saw a panel in another thead and thought it was interesting. Do they do the whole "Dr.Octopus in Spidey's body" thing well?

It's okay, the swap is a bit played out, both in his actions and dialog.

Uncanny Avengers #15: Yep, that's an event comic alright. Thor's putting a lot of work in the Marvel Universe right now, he needs a vacation.

Maybe a bit offtopic, but is there a chance that Comixology will improve their manga collection ? The stuff they offer currently seems to be absolute garbage.

I'd love to buy and read something like Attack on Titan on my tablet

Does anyone know of any stores that might have stock of Batman: The Black Glove Deluxe Edition? I have tried every online store I can think of, as well as my local city stores but had no luck. I guess I left it too late to order but I couldn't free any cash until after Christmas.

Otherwise, would anyone happen to have a spare copy and be willing to part with it?

It's the only book I'm missing from Grant Morrison's run.

If you're located in Kentucky, I saw a copy at a Barnes and Noble in Lexington.

Not sure, could be a ways off even so.

Best bet is just to search out whoever's licensed the manga for English language publication and see if they do any digital versions of them. Just looking at AoT, Kodansha comics is doing print and digital versions of that.

but I am taking tiny steps forward
Sorry to repost, but I'd really appreciate some advice from anyone who's shopped at InStockTrades for a while.

Oh. I only just realized while reading this that the 45% off basically everything is a sale and not just IST's "thing." (I've only just started checking that website a couple months ago.)
So I was planning to get the Miller Daredevil omnibus as well as Absolute Batman and Robin sometime in the next couple months... Would it be wise to just buy them now or is there a pretty certain chance they'll be on the same "sale" again sometime soon?

Tough call, i plan on getting a few things from IST next year, the Uncanny X-Force ominbus, i hope they still have their 50% off select new releases then. They might change their "standard" sale after this month for the new year, you might as well get it now. This 45% off sale has been going on the whole year i think, the next one could be anything, could be better or worse, 45% is fairly good outside of those random 50% off sales some places have.

I don't think either the 45% or the 50% off select new releases is going to change. Those are two of the biggest advantages they have over just about every other retailer.

That's cool, as long as it's entertaining.

Are there any volumes out yet?

yeah, there's three of the Superior Spidey trades, vol 1 collects the first five issues. Also there's a hardcover deluxe version which is slightly oversized and also collects 698-700 of Amazing Spidey ( after 700 it changes to superior ) and 1-5 superior

Superior Spidey jumps into the switch, those other issues do a good job showing the switch. For more i'd start back at the arc prior to 698, Ends of the Earth, which is 3.99 on kindle right now which is a steal compared to $18ish-21 for the hardcover.

Alternatively, if you have an ipad i'd suggest getting Marvel Unlimited subscription and reading everything there.

Marvel Unlimited looks pretty great, if a little pricey.

Normally I would much prefer volumes, but since there only seems to be one (two?) and there have been many, I think Unlimited is the better option here.

I bet I could use that iPad to use around here. Thanks!

Did Nova ever come good? I'm wary of anything Loeb but the art looks lovely.

Some people say it's decent without Loeb, but I refuse to buy the book because of that bland punk Alexander. I want Rich back and then I'll buy wherever the true Nova ends up. I don't know what's the fucking hold-up, if he's not back by 2014 in time for the GotG movie then I'll be even more pissed. Alonso apparently doesn't want extra money by launching a Nova Prime solo.

Unfortunately I am trade waiting, but I can say I'll probably vote this as one of the best series I've ever read when I finally get my hands on that final volume. I can't imagine Hill not sticking the landing. For everyone who hasn't read L&K here, you owe it to yourself. Caaaan't waiiiit.

I started on East Of West volume 1, read about 3 issues so far. Extremely impressed, this might be the best thing Hickman's done? I have all his own independent stuff bar the most recent 2 volumes of Manhattan projects, and it's pretty incredible. It feels like a culmination in his storytelling, where he's got to the point where the world rules can be incredibly complex with many plot points obfuscated but still extremely satisfying moment to moment. When I set down The Red Wing a few years ago, I had the notion what I'd read was incredible but it took a good few readings to even nail down exactly what happened, nevermind then my own interpretation of what happened and what it meant/was saying. I feel like Manhattan Projects he fixed the issue by simply making the book more fun, a bit lighter, a bit more straightforward. This is goes the other route. It doesn't feel like he's backing down, he's just nailing the plotting, the pacing, everything, so it all reads brilliant and what is MEANT to be obfuscated is, rather than just everything feeling that way haha. Just my two cents of course, and I'm only 3 issues in but yea, very very impressed. It feels like the most exciting world building I've witnessed since Wasteland (my personal comic highlight) or The Dark Tower (THE highlight). I just hope it can all pay off.

Can somebody explain to me why Marvel Unlimited sucks donkey dong? They have been removing key issues of ongoing series or uploading them out of order. I know they want you to buy new comics but there are instances of them removing 1 or 2 issues mid run in an ongoing series that is already a year behind the current series.
