It's becoming apparent that i'm skipping Convergence and waiting for reviews, if anything seems can't-miss-able i'll get the digital version when it drops a buck.

God, those Convergence books just sound awful.

it reminds me of directionless Flashpoint tie-ins where they just had a ton of books written by whoever and a couple sounded interesting. Batman by Azzarello was pretty good....but outside of that it was entirely underwhelming from what i read.

The Flashpoint tie ins were more intriguing to me because of the new takes on the characters, it wasn't 80s Superman vs 90s Green Lantern or whatever they're doing here. I really liked Milligan's Secret Seven Flashpoint book, it was Milligan writing Shade the Changing Man, which is never a bad thing. Lemire's Frankenstein book was good, and Robinson's Outsider was solid. The Superman book might be the only DC thing by Snyder that I enjoyed.

But yeah, even Len Wein on Swampy doesn't do anything for me.

Thanks, guys. In Stock Trades it is.
For Infinity Gauntlet, would the paperback trade that includes #1-6 work well enough for him?

Yep, that would be a great choice.

Grayson #4: I'm split on this book, i like parts of it which are light hearted, and some parts that would make a good action book like in issue #3, but overall i don't feel attached to whatever the story is supposed to be. When i get to a page in issue #4 where it says " read batman eternal to find out what they are talking about" that tips the scale to wanting to drop the book because i'm not really enjoying the story to begin with let alone have the patience to direct me elsewhere. I don't think Seeley has done a good job regarding Spyral either. Random 6/10 with bonus points for the chase scene.

Is packaging better than Amazon's (actually, it can't really be worse, but you know what I mean)?

They're owned by Amazon. The packaging is pretty much the same in my experience, although I've not ordered any big omnibuses from them. The hardcovers and TPBs I've ordered have all come in those cardboard envelope jobbies that Amazon tend to use with nothing else in there.

I'm on a big Vertigo binge, and I'm looking for more. This is what I've read so far:

Sandman (read, enjoyed)
Preacher (read, loved)
100 Bullets (in the middle of it now, loving it)
Y The Last Man (in the middle of it now, loving it)
Transmetropolitan (read, loved)

I also have, but haven't started:
Fables
Hellblazer
Scalped
DMZ
the new run of Astro City
Loveless
The Losers
Young Liars
Daytripper
Pride of Baghdad
Codename Knockout
Coffin Hill
Spaceman

So basically I'm looking for unsung Vertigo stuff. The short miniseries that don't get a bunch of press, the underrated series that aren't talked about much due to the shadow of the bigger stuff. Current stuff works too (I'm enjoying The Names and The Kitchen right now and I've checked out Bodies) so anything goes.

Thanks for the help!

Sandman Mystery Theatre. Great setting (1930s/40s), likable characters that evolve during the series and a romance well dealt with. Ran for 70 issues in total.

The only unfortunate thing is that the trade paperbacks end at issue 52. You will have to go digital after that. I've read till volume 4, waiting for the rest to arrive.

Doom Patrol and Animal Man (both by Grant Morrison) are technically DC stuff I guess, but the omnis are under the Vertigo imprint. They're pretty popular but if you haven't read them you really should give them a chance!

Flex Mentallo is awesome too. As is We3. Basically check out anything Morrison has done.

edit: freeza'd that tag lol

Vimanarama. Totally unsung and secretly the best three issues ever released by Vertigo.

Swamp Thing art by Kelley Jones will be awesome.

Yes! That was the one awesome thing that stuck out to me too. That should be amazing. Kelley Jones needs to be doing more interior work.

UNKNOWN SOLDIER. YOU NEED TO READ UNKNOWN SOLDIER.
One of my all time favorites and definitely a hidden gem of Vertigo. I was about to say "underrated," but that's the wrong word because everyone here who's read it thinks it's incredible. It's just that not enough people have read it.

Edit: Zombine, did you ever read Unknown Soldier? I remember you saying you bought it, but I don't remember you mentioning having read it.

Man, just mentioning it makes me want to read it again... And I only just read it a few months ago.

Was about to say the exact same thing. Not really Vertigo, but I'll take any excuse to recommend Doom Patrol to someone. And Animal Man too, but especially Doom Patrol.

Doom Patrol became a Vertigo comic somewhere in the middle of the run like a lot of those kinds of books (Sandman included)

So Vertigo is essentially the closet DC shoves creators into when they start getting too creative.

On Monday, Comixology is having a one day sale on certain vol. 1 Vertigo trades (4.99 a vol). If you're willing to go digital (and you should), tons of great stuff. I'd recommend:

American Vampire vol. 1
Ex Machina vol 1 (Written by Brian Vaughn, he of Y: The Last Man)
FBP Vol. 1
The Invisibles Vol. 1
iZombie Vol. 1
Sweet Tooth Vol. 1

I'm really, really hoping IST's Black Friday sale starts today when they update with the new releases... After the massive CGN tease yesterday, I'm itching to buy some books.

Superman #35: When does the beard get here? This is one of those issues where after 4 pages i already know i'm not going to like the book. Not a big fan of Romita Jr. lately either. Random i do not care/care.

Man, went on IST and saw Northlanders is falling out of print. Needed a Brian Wood fix. His books are so comforting, void of any tension, like watching TNT or a Lifetime movie as a dose off to sleep. Is Starman going outta print too!? Fuck!

Volume 3 HC is gone. Can't find one under $100. (And DC cancelled the volume 3 TPB).

not really sure where else to post it, but Stan Sakai's (Usagi Yojimbo) wife Sharon died this morning after a long battle with a brain tumor. My condolences

Just finished volume 1 of Hellblazer. Great stuff. The stuff in the back was a great bonus, too. Some fictional articles written in a magazine or newspaper about John Constantine, as well as some other stuff like lyrics from John Constantine's old band and some of his journal entries from when he was in a mental ward. Really neat stuff.

Also, the Dave McKean covers were all in the back (rather than before each issue) so I just saw them all for the first time... Those covers are fantastic.

Has anyone read any of Dave McKean's own books? If they're good, I'd be really interested in checking them out. I'd also like to pick up his Sandman covers book sometime or one of his other art books. Probably after I actually read Sandman though. Haha

Dave McKean actually did the art for a very popular issue of Hellblazer written by Neil Gaiman, "Hold Me". #27 I believe.

You you got that coming up

Coffin Hill is crap. If you can find The Witching Hour I loved every second of that.

Oh yesss. That's awesome. Now I'm really looking forward to that. Thanks for the heads up.

...Just checked and it looks like volume 3 of Hellblazer (I just have the first 3 for now) only goes to issue 22 thanks to annuals and guest appearances in volume 2 where it only includes issues 10-13 of the main series. Oh well, I was planning to pick up more volumes soon anyways. I look forward to reading that when I do!

Wow, fantastic recommendations, thanks everyone!

I'm adding pretty much everything mentioned to my list. And yes, I absolutely love digital, it's what got me back into comics in the last few years. So print, digital, makes no difference to me. I like to read the stuff. That's why I love comics.

I hope you do an Image binge next.

Im thinking about it. I'll get back to you once my Vertigo binge has waned a bit, which from the looks of my list and the recommendations here, won't be for a while.

But then again, great comics never get old.

Y The Last Man good all the time a to the end?

Um. Not exactly sure what you meant to say, but if you're asking if it's consistently good from beginning to end, then yes.
I forget what the general consensus is, but I enjoyed it from beginning to end.
It has been a while though, since it was basically the first comic I ever read.

I'll second the suggestion to get into Image as well. Image is the new Vertigo. If you like Vertigo stuff, you'll love Image stuff too. If you haven't gotten into any Image series yet, definitely load up on the $10 MSRP (so $5 on IST) first volumes of nearly every series.

I've never read Hellblazer myself, and I know each trade is essentially it's own story.

Which are the best/ones I should pick up if?

Generally people like Ennis' run on Hellblazer the best (and I expect it will be my favorite Hellblazer stuff too when I get to it since I'm a massive Ennis fan), but I decided to start from the very beginning and so far it has been excellent.

It is. Still one of my favorites.
