Concord | State of Play Reveal Trailer

I was getting Beyond Good and Evil 2 and GotG vibes from the trailer but was left super disappointed due to being another team based competitive multi-player game.

I don't give a shit who works or writes for the game. I am my own judge.

I honestly think the game will be quite popular. I have a hard time believing Playstation, with Bungie consulting, is putting out a mediocre hero-shooter to die. Especially when they dedicated 12min of their State of Play to showcasing the game. That tells me they are quite confident. Playstation didn't do anything close to that for Helldivers 2. And just like Helldivers 2, I don't see Playstation rushing Concord to market without sitting on a good amount of content

What do you deem a success/failure? CCU/Sales/Critics? I don't really like critics for GAAS games, mostly because launch issues can bring them down, like With HD2. CCU or sales data would work for me. I'd be cool for an avatar change wager. Make a reasonable metric for success and I'll accept
I don't think the game is a definite failure, but I don't think it's a lock either. Successful companies have failed to launch products too.

Concord is a big gamble on a genre that isn't entirely uncontested (Overwatch 2 is still top 20 on Steam alone).

The real gamble is making it a pay-to-play title. They’re going to have to show something quite special or unique during the beta to make people want to pay money for a game that looks like an Overwatch clone when Overwatch (and others) are sitting out here in F2P-land.

Unless the game is a total bomb, it is very easy money for Playstation. It will sell well in the first couple of weeks just because it's a new polished gaas game. Whether it has legs is a completely different situation. But Sony can probably recoup most of development costs if it is just a competent game, which the gameplay seems to indicate it is

It's a much bigger risk to release as a F2P and hope it becomes a pillar gaas game

That’s an awfully big assumption. I keep seeing people say it’ll do well because Helldivers did well at the same price point. That ignores the reality that Helldivers is a coop PvE game while this is just another 5v5 hero shooter in a saturated market where most of its competitors are established and free to play.

Being “polished” isn’t enough. Sometimes even being unique isn’t enough. Just ask all of the well made MMOs that should have done well but couldn’t break Warcraft’s grasp. If polished and unique mattered, Wildstar would be thriving.

People keep saying it is an oversaturated market. I just strongly disagree. I would argue Concord is directly competing against Overwatch, which has never been weaker. And I think there are a lot of players that can't/won't play Overwatch because the game has been out nearly a decade and the skill ceiling to compete is ridiculously high. I put myself in that camp

When people say the market is saturated, what they mean to say is "I want the market to be saturated."

It really is that simple.

F2P has issues like greater prevalence of hackers and incentivizing more terrible monetization. It's not a panacea imo.

It was cancelled after 2 week.
I think they will relaunch it later as a f2p game with MTX shit
They won’t. No way does Sony have their biggest failure out there for the world to see, every single day. A constant reminder of how insanely stupid they were to acquire that company then continue to waste money on it. All anyone will ever see with that game is how bad Sony did with their attempt at GaaS. Just utter failure. Disgraceful, disgusting and offensive. Offensive to the eyes. That game is an attack on mankind.

You’re right, “Concord” is now synonymous with failure + embarrassment. That name is so tainted that I think there’s nothing Sony could do to make people want to give it another chance. I think Sony would prefer it if they could erase Concord from the world’s memory and pretend the whole thing never happened.

That said, I would love to see them resurrect Concord just for the hilarity of watching it bomb for a second time.

I think it's really done, I know they left the door open with the statement but I honestly believe that was only done as a way for people who did enjoy the game not to be told essentially "you enjoyed a game that even we find irredeemably bad, have you tried having some actual taste?"

You will have your second Concord, it's called Fairgame$

It's just so funny.

8 years. 8 effing years. Someone at Sony sees it 6 years into the cycle and is all, "we gotta have this, we gotta buy this studio..."

It's just so surreal and bizarre but the outcome was so glaringly obvious. Concord is an absolute legend and we can never allow it to be forgotten.

I'm waiting for a based cosplay troupe to go all out with Concord outfits at a convention. It's gonna happen someday and I can't wait to see the photos.

And the kids will ask, what’s with the ugly fat they/them folk? I’ll have to ask if their hair is purple. If not, then we will need to educate them on the The Tragedy of Concord (game, not the plane).

I dont think so either.

But the final PR tweet had a message they were looking into it etc.... So it was worded in such a way it wasnt a definitely goodbye. If it was totally dead, I dont get why they wouldnt just apologize and finalize it.

I really hope more info comes out because it’s so morbidly fascinating. But I think it’s a combination of a couple things

1. The “Disney approach” where they think they can let the activist writers cram it full of their grievances and identity politics under the guise of appealing to the “modern audiences”, and they can get everyone to buy it by hyping the fuck out of it and labeling the critics as a bunch of phobes. Sadly for them, audiences have finally caught on in the last year or so and stopped buying this shit.

2. Panic buying during the pandemic (see also: Bungie). Companies were hiring every dev they could find just to keep their competitors from hiring them. Video games and live service games were on fire. Microsoft bought half the damn industry. Sony probably overpaid and didn’t do their due diligence because they panicked and wanted to snatch Firewalk up before someone else beat them to it.
