COVID LOCKDOWN

i live in sicily and here the controls are not really strict, today i walked with my dog without a problem, police is not exactly efficent here...

the working\money problem it's what worry me for the most part.
my landlord at work still expect 4000 euros every month and all my client are close right now...

Here in my place unfortunately, they are super-strict. People with dogs are still allowed to walk, but people without a dog and going out just for a walk (even if alone and taking the proper distance from others) they immediately find you and send you back home.

Anyway I still haven't understood: will the lockdown in Italy ends on 25 of March or 3 of April? I know that schools will be closed until 3 of April, but it's not clear when walks alone outside will be allowed again. I also haven't understood when shops and restaurants will reopen.

Absolutely agree here. If the lockdown is extended all it takes is for a few people to riot or just go to work ignoring the lockdown to have a very tense situation.
Riots ok, but how do people just go to work? Do you show up at your store that is closed, and has no customers, and expect a pay cheque?

yeah it's not clear if the end of the lockdown is the 25 or the 3 april, but people is convinced that they are gonna prolong it.

People are panicing for something that so far mostly only affects the very old and sick.
People are panicing. Expect hysteria anytime someone will propose to lift the lockdown, so lockdown will likely remain for quite a while.

When will restaurants reopen? Probably never since I can not imagine any restaurant that can survive going a few months or likely a few quarters with no customers and no business.
Most small tobacco shops and corner convenience stores will never re-open either.

New cornerstores and restaurants will eventually open. But the current ones are closed forever and the employees are jobless now.

Yeah, hysteria is real. my aunt (who lives in a really small town in another region of Italy) got attacked/questioned by other customers while in the supermarket because she wasn't wearing a mask/respirator, except it's impossible to find them anywhere and there is no law saying you must wear it.

A person in my building,a few days ago, screamed to me to stay away from the stairs while he was going upstairs (I was going downstairs), even though there was a more than reasonable distance between us, and screamed to wait until he passed before I could go down. There are some ridicoulous scenes. I truly regret coming back to italy several years ago. this is no way to live. They can't expect everybody to stop living completely for a disease forever, otherwise living like this has no sense.

When all of this ends, I will start saving up to buy a second home (maybe with some chickens and a small garden) somewhere in the outskirt of a mountain town (which I use to go to hike sometime), so even if if this happens again I'm surrounded only by nature and can still go out because no one enforces it on hiking trails (or so I hope), so they can't force me inside a flat and concrete like now for who knows how long.

You mean a very small number of you are working from home, not most.
I am certain that janitors, retail workers, tourism, hotels, restaurants, etc etc can not meaningfully work from home.
Can the lady at the ticket desk at the airport work from home? The baggage handlers? The security guards at all these now closed places?
The guy that drives the schoolbus is an independent self-employed contractor. Can he work from home? Who pays his salary when he has no contract? Landlord still wants rents paid.

Well, day of self discovery today:

Turns out I enjoy the actual leaving home to go to work in an actual office. Not having fun with this working from home situation.

And it's only day one.

I’m not going to underestimate desperate people with lots of free time on their hands. Italians have a peculiar disdain for rules and authority, and a real knack for drama. I hope this time will be different, of course.

I like it one day out of ten, or thereabouts.

This situation is awful, and now I can't go to a bar, or go to the gym, or go to the movies, or do anything but sit around and watch YoUTube videos while my dogs sleep next to me.

The UK will suffer the most with this virus, both on casualties as well as economic recession. You left at the wrong time.

The UKs strategy is ridiculous, they want group immunity on a virus that we have no control over, the country will collapse in less than a months time, and there will be thousands of casualties.

Economically it will be even worse, considering most big companies are leaving the UK because they want headquarters in the EU, this is the moment for it, when the gov. finally admits its out of control and they put the country in lockdown, most small businesses will not survive a 2-3 month period without business, and by the time that happens, thats when the EU will be recovering because we're pretty much all in lockdown right now, also im pretty sure the virus will survive your summer weather, which makes eveyrthing worse... so very very dark times are coming to the UK and US as well.
Try harder comrade.
Great Britain Bank rolls Europe as a net contributor. We are the EU's largest export market in the world and not one British company is leaving for the EU, because simply! Our tax is much cheaper than any where in Europe.
Great Britain is also the only country in Europe with economic growth. Not one EU nation has economic growth, all in decline.
I feel sorry for you Europeans because you are all brain washed with marxist propaganda and it will be what kills you all. Have fun with Islam and communism.

I'm unsure where you took those numbers from.

England is number 155 in GDP Growth, its on the bottom side of the list worldwide, not only the EU, with most EU countries having a higher GDP growth. Ireland is doing great, but lets remind ourselves Ireland voted strongly to remain in the EU and wants to join the EU in the following years. Also, UKs GDP growth is artificially increased because of the terrible growth in the past 3 years, so its still catching up instead of progressing.

As for the import/export statistics, In 2018 the EU accounted for 45% of UK exports and 53% imports , however, the UK only makes up of about 8% of the EUs exports.

As for your tax system, the corporate tax is 19% which is around the average, countries such as Finland, Iceland too have 20% corporate tax, comparing the 9% in Hungary or 16.55% in Switzerland. You are also not taking into consideration the export taxes the UK will have to pay when it finaly leaves the EU, raising its tax level quite high. As for VAT tax, the same scenario happens, its on the average side of things.

Another factor that might hinder the UK is the simple fact that aside all tax advantages of having the Headquarters in the EU, there are quite a few countries with a lower minimum income, better weather, and good english speaking level, so there are little incentive to actually stay in the UK.

Vodafone was one of the first major companies that released a statement saying they are considering other EU options for their headquarters.

We can also look at how the £ is dealing with this, currently sitting in one of the lowest values in the past 2 years, so it doesnt look very positive.

Also day eight of containment/quarantine for my town (in Padua and province of Padua it was put on 8 of March if I don't remember wrong). BTW, what are you people doing it after the lockdown in your country ends? In mine it's supposed to end on 3 april, but there are rumours that they want to extend it.

Personally I will be out for very long walks during the following days (even longer than what I usually did before).

If the planet's survival is at stake I believe it can.

I think it's a bit early to start blaming Covid for the apocalypse :messenger_grinning_squinting:

You base it on kill rate, in which case Covid is infinitely worse.
It is based on kill rate and ease of spread. It destroys the flu in lethality.

Agreed, infinitely is a bit silly, but it's definitely more lethal.

I'm still baffled as to why LoL cancelled LCS and LEC indefinitely...but the other regions (including S.Korea) are still running along. Like damn dude, it's a videogame. You can just have them play it in an empty building and stream that shit. No idea as to the logic behind that one.

Please do, because all my stats (which are quite easy to find) say contrary, I'd love to check those economic growth stats when everywhere else say the reverse. I'd also love to know where is it stated that the UK is the only nation with economic growth, I have tried harder to find it, but its nowhere to be found.

You have fallen under a delusion that is not factual but seems to be wishfull thinking for a twisted revengefull "I told you so" moment, however no stats show this economic growth, there was a small boost in january, which is gone now, and the contagious situation will set back the UKs economy severely, specially with Boris ridiculous idea of group immunity.

Family’s from NYC and they tell me this feel worse than 911. Pretty bad here in the Midwest as well but alas I’m already a remote employee so my life hasn’t changed much. Wife is a hospital worker so I’m not sure how safer I am at home either way.

Damn, i have just read an interview to some italian virologists; they said that we should stay in complete lockdown (so no work unless essential and no outside walks permitted) like this for at least 2-3 months more. This is never gonna end, ... .
What's the point of living like this like a complete recluse 24/7 inside a small flat. I understand banning social gatherings or any type of group meeting, but at least let me walk in countryside roads alone... For people who live in a flat, this is hell.

Ok, as someone who has just been through 6 weeks of quarantine in China (not Wuhan, another city up north), here are my survival tips:

- get a little exercise every day. I have been looking after a neighbour's dog, so have been going for walks every morning (luckily, my apartment complex had a nice sized garden we were allowed to walk around). It sounds that some people in Europe are completely locked inside, so search youtube for some exercise videos if this is the case. I recommend the Boho Beautiful yoga channel - a beautiful woman doing great yoga in beautiful locations - worth a fap at least, even if you're not into yoga. There are also some prison exercise videos, so there's no excuse for not getting ripped! Seriously, exercise isn't only good for the body, it's great for your mood too. I always felt much better on the days I did exercise, and it gives you a routine to follow.

- only check the coronavirus news once a day, and then forget about it and do something else with the rest of your time. Where I was in China, they listed every new infection and even included that person's movements in the days leading up to the confirmation of their infection, making everyone stressed if they had happened have to crossed paths with the infected (we even had a couple of cases in the apartment building next door to me). Some of my friends payed a little too much close attention to this and worried themselves unnecessarily. At least in China you get a good dose of positive propaganda every time you watched the news. In western countries, any dipshit with a social media account can declare the end of civilisation and spread bullshit rumours. Social media is pretty toxic and negative at the best of times, it's even worse in the present circumstances. The mainstream media isn't much better either. Watch some movies instead.

- don't panic buy. China, with 1.4 billion mouths to feed, didn't experience any major shortages of food (or toilet paper, for that matter). What makes you think that your country will? Worried about reports of empty shelves? Well that's because people like you, yes you, are buying shitloads of toilet paper and pasta, of course the supermarkets weren't prepared for that. Don;t be a dick, maybe some old person needs that toilet paper. I week's worth of supplies each shopping trip is more than enough. I never saw any panic buying whenever I went to the supermarket in China, and I never saw any empty shelves. To be honest I'm disappointed by the panic buying in western countries. The Chinese appear to be much more civilised.

- the number of new daily infections will likely continue to rise for the next 2 weeks, even in places under complete lockdown. After 2 weeks they should start to drop. Where I am (and in most places in China outside of Hubei), the number of new cases dropped to zero by the 4th week. Most places decided to keep the lockdowns in place until 2 weeks had passed without any new cases.

- the lockdown probably won't last much longer than 6 weeks in most places. Hubei is pretty much the only place still under severe lockdown in China now. Where I am, the lockdown lasted for 6 weeks, and some less affected places even started to open up again after 4. Now many of the shops are open again and the streets are full of cars. We still need to give a reason when leaving our apartment complexes, and most of the restaurants are take-out only, but compared to the past few weeks it already feels "back to normal" in many ways. Especially with the temperature heating up, I predict that most places in Spain, Italy and France etc will start to slowly open up again after 3/4 weeks. Sure, things won't be 100% back to normal, but trust me, after being cooped up inside for a month, even a little freedom will make you feel very happy!

- you'll get used to it quicker than you imagine. What seems strange for the first few days just starts to feel like the new normal after the first week. You'll probably feel more bored than scared. Be positive and use that boredom to get shit done (or just play through that backlog)

- it almost certainly won't be as bad as China in most places. The population density in most Chinese cities is insane. I'm from a big western capital city myself, but it doesn't compare to here. The Chinese city I live in is considered "third tier", but there must be a few thousand people living in my apartment complex alone (at least 12 big buildings of 30 floors each, 4-12 apartments per floor depending on the building, 2-3 people per apartment). If you live in Manhattan, then you have more reason to worry, if you live in a detached house in Arizona, probably not. The outbreak in China also occurred around Chinese new year, with families gathering to eat together in close proximity, often using their own chopsticks to pick up shared food - a recipe for virus spread.

That's all I can think of for now. Calm down everyone. You're still almost certainly more likely to die in a car accident than from this virus (40,000 per year in the USA alone, apparently). If you're feeling panicked, then that's a sing to get off the internet for a while.

Im unsure if you are building hype to your top secret revelation, or just incredibly gullible/troll.

The way you act shows exacly that you have no factual evidence of what you claim, otherwise you would have shared already. Information shouldnt be spread in an agressive matter, calling people liars isnt the way to go, even if you were right (which you arent), spreading good, factual information is always good.

As I said earlier, Im very much into economics and politics (its part of my day to day job) and I am yet to see actual numbers that go beyond the fairytale idea that the UK would thrive on its own, even looking at the best case scenario, you are looking at a very steep recession, even without considering the current outbreak, the economy would regress an estimate 10 years, with the current situation only god knows what will happen, but I can guarantee you, the UK will be the country that will suffer the most, both in casualties as well as economically, surpassing Italy in the next 2 weeks. This is not a prediction, this is what will happen unless there is extreme measures which the gov. is avoiding for no reason, the schools should have been closed weeks ago.

So yeah, "Destroy" me with your illuminati facts!

Your situation isnt comparable to the UK, but its not very different, unfortunately Trump neglected this situation, and still neglects it comparing it to the common flu, it is not the common flu, it is nowhere near the common flu, it is much much more dangerous, and the biggest danger isnt the virus itself, but the long incubation period.

Your chances of survival if you are a healthy adult with -50 y/o are very very high, the main problem is how infectious it is. If only 0.5% of the population (on any country) has symptoms (which is a very low estimate), no country can deal with it...there are not enough ventilators and beds to take care of those patients, besides, there wont be any beds to treat any other illness or emergencies.

Another big issue is, you can get the virus multiple times, so this will probably keep coming for the next few years during winter time.

This is the first time we are dealing this in modern times, so there is no protocol, everyone is freaking out, but the only safe answer right now is simply to stay home and chill, it isnt as dangerous as it seems if people are staying at home, but this has to be enforced.

This isn't confirmed yet I think. I'm only aware of 2 cases where it might have happened and it could have been faulty tests..
Anyway.. governments around the world aren't trying to keep/beat the virus out permanently, they are just trying to keep it from infecting everyone at once to minimize deaths, but most will catch it at some point.
If people could easily get it again, that approach would be fundamentally flawed...

The US and UK are using 2 entirely different strategies to combat the virus; isolation vs. herd immunity. It's pointless to lump the two countries together. Please don't act like the US isn't taking things seriously to try and win some cheap political points.

Politic? This isnt about politics, I have no bias or side, this is just about numbers and what actions countries are taking to avoid severe consequences. Theres one fundamental similarity, which is the ignorance of the leadership, a week ago the US was completely ignoring this, and still is, this is factual not an opinion, and unfortunately it still is ignoring it, the country should be in lockdown already, you are coming in too late. Most US news channels were saying that it would never spread and making stupid comparisons with a common flu or even car crashes, everything to make it sound like a mild headache, which it isnt.

The US numbers reveal the highest daily number, almost 1k cases in a single day.

I think you're a bit misinformed.

1. The travel ban from China went into place on Feb. 2nd. That's a lot more than "a week ago". More bans have cone into effect since.
2. The news has been 24/7 coronavirus dominated in the US. It's not being downplayed.

This is how Trump reacted -

The travel ban in china was a political move and not a security one.

Up until march 10th, his reactions were basically joking with the whole thing. On March 11th he suspended EU travel excluding the UK which was the highest risk. He continues to shake hands and touch mics, so the less informed will see this and think "well, its not that bad, its just a flu, he keeps doing it so it must be safe".

Well it's only been half a day here... but first thing i'll do is go see my girlfriend and imitate bunnies 😂
