Crash Bandicoot 4 |OT| It IS about time!

Full completion of levels is a pain and tediousness. There are too many boxes and practically every level has some of them hidden, i ran 5-6 times through some levels and still can't find this boxes. Inversed levels just a cheap filler but you still need to complete them for 100%. Game is full of stupid gimmicks, cheap difficulty and very questionable design choices. And it's bloated as shit, it's a ubisoft gamedesign in a nutshell(some called it "content"). I'm only truly enjoy tape levels, because it's a pure tight platforming without bullshit. In general i'm very dissapointed tbh and it's sad. This game is nowhere near original trilogy.

This game is an absolute blast to just play + beat but it's an absolute fuckfest of a shitty grind if you're a completionist or are an obsessive compulsive achievement/trophy completer.
LOL I was playing this the other night and one of my best mates is this type of person and I was thinking the frustration he is going to have is going to be huge when he plays this. I'm really bad at this game and to even complete a level missing some of the boxes and hidden items is good enough for me!

If I was a trophy hunter / completionist I'd probably be very pissed off with this game.

Not really sure I get where you're coming from here; like, literally 40% of Crash 3 is non-platforming levels but this game is full of gimmicks and nowhere near the originals..? Even the mask segments are only part of the levels and each of them serves to add to the platforming, not distract you from it. What's the cheap difficulty and questionable design you're talking about? The bloat only really comes in the form of the inverse levels which are totally optional to game completion, seems kinda unfair.

Been trying to give this some thought at why I am struggling with some of this game's difficulty. They don't introduce you really at all to new concepts before giving you an obstacle that requires pretty good execution of it. What gets me is they almost tried?

The dinosaur level with the floating platforms on the lava where you have to slide under the walls was one of two that really beat me over the head with this thought. You first slide under a wall that is on the solid ground and no hazards. Cool easy, got it. The very next jump is now a similar wall that looks different, but also floating, moving platforms on lava that sink if you stand on them for too long, but also a lava bubble shooting up as well. It's just 0 to 100 in about 5 seconds of gameplay.

Basically, the more I think on it, the more I think they came up with a bunch of discrete cool ideas for some platforming challenges. Realized they had a lot and all wanted them in there, and forgot to organically introduce players to them properly for... well who knows the development reason.

I wanted a game that felt and played like the old ones, and that's exactly what I got. It doesn't do anything remarkable, and won't win any awards, but its a fucking Crash Bandicoot game, with all the same frustrations and brilliance as the Naughty Dog games. I think they've done a bang up job.

Hysterically overpriced though.

Im really really starting to hate this hidden boxes. It becomes veery annoying when you finish a lvl 150/153 boxes...
I hope they patch this.

I’m enjoying the experience so far, but it feels like it could be even more “‘modernized”.

Some of the hidden boxes feel very cheap, some time trials put new TNT boxes among normal ones just for a shitty “gotcha” moment.

Hit boxes, just like the N Sane Trilogy, is a little messy, and some enemies don’t really correspond their weaknesses with their design.

With that said, this is a very good game, art style is gorgeous as fuck and gameplay feels very polished.

I think they didn’t want to get shit on for a lack of content in a $60 platformer. Some reviews and people still did anyways.

There’s tons of stuff to do if you’re going for completion, but I don’t think I’ll go for all that in this one. I find the levels way too long and 500 boxes is crazy. The new ability gimmicks are just making the platforming busier and more difficult.

I’m enjoying it just playing for fun right now without caring about a 106% or whatever.

Game is great fun but i think having the counter pop up on screen each time you die is an unnecessary fuck you from the devs, especially on levels that there are plenty of times where death is pretty much unavoidable unless the planets all perfectly align. Makes that death counter infuriating on those levels and i really dont enjoy being taunted.

We should be able to turn that off, IMO

For people saying the game is overpriced, it does give you a lot of levels and there are loads of games that give you less for full retail. I don't really see how it is overpriced at all.

You can tell a lot of effort and love has gone into this one, it also runs and looks amazing. I'm not sure why it should be cheaper to be honest compared to some of the shit we get out there.

I have been playing a couple of hours now and I'm enjoying the game so far. It will never be as the originals but I think T4B made a really good effort to bring the franchise into the future.

It's challenging, some things feel near impossible already, but so did the N. Sane Trilogy and Nitro Fueled at first aswell. What's the point playing a platformer if everything is served on a silver plate with minimum effort?

New masks makes you play the game differently which works better than I thought it would. Worlds are beautiful and well made and it's fun to see some familiar characters again.

Off Balance level....um yeah, theres some weird issues going on with the wall run mechanic. Crash will randomly just fall off it when im clearly pushing forward on the stick to run. 30+ deaths to get through the level, 15+ lost on that last wallrun part where there are blocks on the walls. Something aint right here.

The game is challenging but so many deaths arent my fault

God bless anyone who attempts a platinum on this one, too much precision and perfection required in a luck based game

Still love the game though but some of these levels feel off

Yeah thank God I borrowed this one first, you can tell it was designed primarily for streamers to pretend to have fits for their audience.

Why is this full price? I went to buy it with actual shock to see the 69.99 price tag and went nah, fuck that shit. I don't know what I was expecting, I wasn't consciously thinking about the price but I now know I'm not paying full price for a crash game and I'll be more open to buying it when it falls on sale to around 30 euro if I'd likely have bought it last night at 39.99. I suppose this is likely why the game has done shite in sales and the remaster/remake pricing has effecting perceived value in future titles of the series. Thinking on it now, I'm not going to pay above full price for RE8 as I've had two full games now for 49.99 so day one on that is out.

There is a lot to talk about some design choices in the game.

I enjoy it a lot for the most part. The levels are meaty and I'm happy the didn't hold back on the difficulty.

But...
It is a nightmare for completionists. The 3 death gem shouldn't be there. The fruit percentage gems also.
The single all crate gen should be the only one there and they could avoid the missable crates that feel they are trolling you.
Also the tapes should be in the place of hidden gems imo and not tied to zero deaths.

Also, while the game is beautiful, something doesn't feel right about the colour palette. It is very tiring to the eyes when you are looking for crates. It needed more contrast.

Still I find it a very good game and I would like to see another one from the same team as long as they take the feedback seriously.

Sad this flopped. That will be the end for Crash.

Feels pretty great as a platformer, not too fond of the gimmicks but got to the snow level with the time mechanic - and liked it!

Looks spot on to me, nice and rich. Adjust your TV.

It's not that bad, the game still ended up being no1 in uk charts. This time we're getting "only" one game instead of three and that may result in many people waiting for a price drop.

Basically. I find it too overpriced right now for just a dose of nostalgia.

I haven’t seen sales numbers, but I assume it’s physical only from the UK or something that people like using for some reason. All the other Crash and Spyro stuff sold well.

This game was giving a demo for digital preorders. It’s not on pc or switch yet. It’s also more expensive than any of the new Crash or Spyro stuff were at release.

Well it's the only measurement we can get (outside of gamstat which can't provide real sales numbers). Also afaik the charts were expanded with digital sales, they're not only about physical sales anymore.

Nearing the end now. I have enjoyed it, but it is pretty unforgiving which has somewhat taken the fun away from the game.

No way I'd even bother to attempt collecting everything.

Can’t get over how good this ended up being. Beautiful and feels so good to control, better than the prior remasters to me. Really fun new mechanics, and extremely challenging.

On that note tho and as others have said, it’s punishing. I say that as a trophy guy. Just finishing the game is the right kind of challenging.

Some of these time trials and collectibles though? Absurd. I about killed myself beating what I thought was the final time trial score to beat - only to find out there was another rung up and I’d need to shave an additional 20 (!) seconds off. And that’s just one level. Not going to put myself through the paces for this platinum, but having a great time.

One of my favorites for the year.

Rage deleted game yesterday after spending 3 hours straight on a overall very easy level(first level in winter world) because of one hidden box. This level already has 4 hidden rooms with boxes and they thought it was not enough. They can go fuck yourself with this "gamedesign".
Get 18 first perfect relics and it wasn't hard, maybe game is much harder in second half but i doubt it. Heard about Cortex Castle, but if it just one level than it's ok, some hours of training should do it. So i think platinum was very reachable for me but this boxes ruined everything lol

A rage quit so intense I almost respect it.

Beaten the main game, and really enjoyed my time with it - but I feel like they might have taken the brutality too far. Disc is going on eBay and I'm glad I didn't buy digital for £60.

The deathless + every box in the same run relics are outrageous. I wouldn't be surprised if the completion rate on that platinum never goes above 0.3% or something. It's a shame, because along with the inverted levels it immediately put me off going for anything beyond game completion. I just don't feel like even bothering with the the basic gems when I know I'll never get the relics without hours of grinding the same level patterns over and over and over. 100%ing the old games was fun even with some frustrating moments, this just feels like masochism.

Yeah it was a fun honeymoon period but the mark was definitely missed with this one as a Crash Bandicoot game. Feels more like what a Rare game would've been if they made a linear one.

Finished the game on Tuesday. The Cortex Castle game was fucking insane and rage-inducing. I haven't raged like that in a long time. Felt like my 3-year-old throwing a tantrum.
115 lives to finish the last stage!! The final section was bullshit.

Anyway, overall I enjoyed the game but I found the difficultly too hard which took away from some of the enjoyment. I'm going to go back and play through some of the extra levels but there is no way in hell I'm going to try and collect everything in this game.

I finished this a few days ago and I felt conflicted. On one end, this might very well be the best Crash game ever made; the art style/direction is amazing, with diverse locations with a story true to the originals. On the other hand, the game was difficult in some sections that got exceedingly frustrating and not fun at all. I just couldn’t grasp the thought that here I am playing a new Crash game in 2020 but it’s so difficult that I wasn’t even enjoying it at times. This is/was a series meant for children - there is no way a child could possibly ever beat this.

Fast forward to the last few days, and I’m having second thoughts. I’m learning more and more about the game mechanics and bit by bit I’m making my way through the levels collecting all gems, boxes and beating the levels without dying. I don’t necessarily intend to get the Platinum for this game, but it has grown on me exponentially trying to 100 percent each level and the satisfaction of beating the levels completing is gratifying. It certainly is a contender for GOTY.

Was. Kids really aren't going to make up the bulk of people buying Crash 4, even if it's a cartoony platformer it's absolutely targetted at the people who grew up with Crash and are now adults.

Unsurprisingly, I checked the trophy count on one of the tracker websites and 28 people out of 13,848 have managed to platinum the thing. In their (probably very rough) estimates it's listed as the 477th hardest platinum out of 10,880 games, or almost in the top 5%. Mental.

This is some of the best 3D platforming I've played, some of the levels are gorgeous too. Fun and satisfying, a little challenging perhaps but that's Crash.

A few bits can be frustrating at times (overall not overbearingly so) but with repetition you become a pro. More checkpoints could help, but they do dynamically appear more often if you fuck a section up enough.

Do wish the tougher trophies weren't so unachievable though, as mentioned. They are so out of my reach I'm not gonna even attempt and that's a shame as I'd have loved to have went for the platinum but this is just silly.

Cracking game though, has really grew on me.

I find this game super well made and extremely fun yet sometimes I find it suuuuuuuuuuuuuuuper frustrating.

But I came here to ask, is anyone having an issue where your character randomly loses momentum? Basically, running or jumping, my character will randomly behave as if I am barely tilting the stick, despite pressing it all the way. I've died soooooooo much because of it. Seems more frequent during side scrolling sections. My first thought is it's a controller issue but no such symptoms exist on other games. I'm on Xbox One X

Strange, I've never experienced that. I even turned off the shadow helper option and I am impressed with how it controls. It takes a little getting used to but if I fuck up I feel it is my own fault.

Yes, and I wanted to point that out in my previous post, but there were a couple of instances where Crash doesn’t register a second jump and another inconsistency with the controls, which is crazy considering how responsive this game is.

Absolutely. Happened to me on that first stage with the wall running. Im pushing forward yet crash just falls off the wall like im not.

Yeah the game controls really well overall, and it's imo way better than N. sane trilogy, now I wish toys for bob would have done the remake. Yet, this still has some quirks that keep it from surpassing or even matching the PS1 originals.

I just beat this level in the morning. Think it took me 123 lives or something around that. This last part, and the sky box chase tested my patience for sure. Somebody said this is very souls like, in which you have to make it to the check point in order to soldier on. I agree.
I wish the game was in full 4K and they had a Halloween zone / level and it wouldve been the best crash game.

That last section of Cortex Castle is the most rage-inducing shit ever!! haha

That last section in Cortez Castle I died around 30 times the first time (60 in total for the whole level). It’s difficult but was quite fun when you got the hang of it.
