Dark Souls internal rendering resolution fix (DSfix)

Yeah, the fog gates are entirely GPU bound, they improved the CPU performance.

I've downsampled for 150 hours without crashes. Could your GPU be overheating?

People are mentioning that the audio has been fixied. DId you notice this also (not doing th audio downmixing trick)?

Durante, thanks once again for such great work. I am very appreciative.

So they made enough changes that CPU performance has improved, yet didn't make improvements to the rendering chain that DSfix manipulates?
Yes. Well, they did make changes (improvements?) to the main rendering loop that the FPS unlock replaces. But there are tons of things they could have improved to increase CPU performance without affecting DSfix (pathfinding, collision detection, physics, ...).

I'm more shaking my head at the fact they could have easily made DSfix unnecessary for increasing the game's output resolution, but didn't. Makes me feel great about Dark Souls 2's graphical potential -.-

I'm sure you're sick of hearing it by now, but thanks for your (and Nwks) hard work on this!

Everything looks to be working perfectly.

I ran into a small bug, though: when using just a scaled hud, it disappears within a few seconds of loading the game. It goes completely hudless (even the GFWL home button doesn't show). Hitting the shift key brings up the full, big hud.

A small problem and one we can live with compared to earlier, for sure.
This should be fixed now in 2.0.1.

Next time I hope From and Namco have the common decency and common sense to contact Durante before releasing another patch. It really is in their best interest.

I can't forget something that doesn't exist in the US.

I wasn't aware there was a retail version in EU. Does it not hook into Steam at all?

It comes with a Steam code that can register to your account, but it's entirely optional.

ughhh this game...

Huh I never got such a key o.o I bought the retail German version and tried to enter the only key in the box which came back as "Invalid" :(

Also I will say it again you are awesome Durante! :D

Weird. I'm just relaying the info I've scrapped from the Steam forums.

But that place is a cesspit, so I wouldn't be surprised if it was inaccurate.

Hmm well maybe someone just got things mixed up and actually meant the Namco Bandai register code? That's the only other "key like" thing I have in there.

What the.... I just now out of morbid curiosity entered the key I entered in GFWL before in Steam again and it checked out o.o I swear this didn't work before and I rechecked for mistakes three times... Oh well maybe it didn't work because I tried it a day before release? Well anyway all that's left to say is: Thank you based morningbus! :D

I assume you tried registering both? It is kind of weird because they are oddly specific with it: http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2901670

Maybe it is a new thing they recently did, like how all old copies of Unreal Tournament 3 were retrofitted to give you a Steam copy? Give it another shot and see if it registers to your account.

Edit: Just saw your edit. I definitely think they went back after the fact and made the keys Steam-registrable.

So did you receive the patch somehow before linking with Steam?

That would make sense yeah, maybe someone should put a big note in the OT?

Well to be honest I haven't played Dark Souls in a while but I assume it would get patched over GFWL normally.

So did this patch mess up the mouse fix? I dont own a controller for my PC but I did want to pick this up during the Steam sale if it is playable with a mouse.

For comparison, people claim that games like Batman and Dead Space "are meant to be played with a controller" but I dominate those game with kbam. Is this a situation like those games or is it really unplayable with a mouse?

Apparently the mouse fix is pretty good, but the default mouse movement is hysterically bad. plus all the button prompts are for 360 pad (there might be a texture replacement for kb/m by now). I also much prefer the analog stick for player movement over the digital WASD.

Getting massive tearing when unlocking the framerate, is it possible to force d3doverrider on this?

EDIT: Running it in a borderless window gets rid of the tearing.

Not a big deal but, DXtory overlay doesn't seem to be working now for some reason, I can't really see the FPS but it appears to be smoother indeed. Not as many framedrops.

Also like that the soul counter is now visible in the minimal hud.

Adding DARKSOULS.exe or DATA.exe doesn't seem to work though. Borderless window breaks 3D so that didn't work after all for me.

DATA.exe with Medium detection level works for me.

Triple Buffering and Vsync forced.

You could always set the alpha of the soul count (and the other HUD components) in the .ini, I just changed the default ;)

Great work Durante.

I wasn't playing with 60 FPS enabled because it seemed fairly unpredictable. Now it's pretty consistent. 60 in most places, Blighttown type places about 40~50. Bonfires still knock it down, but that's not a big deal.

To folks with i5-2500k, what settings are you using? Trying to find the sweet spot. I have a 690GTX but I haven't been able to get SLI to work.

Hm, my game kind of freaks out when I walk near a dead boss in the DLC (
Artorias, in the arena near the DLC leaderboard
). A subtitle flickers at the bottom of my screen and doesn't stop until I leave the area. I hope it's isolated to that room since it seems to disable other controls!

First time I try the hud scaling... It looks like it works. But I can still see the button flashes in the area were the buttons normally go. Any way to fix this?

Batman plays wonderfully with M+KB. No comparison to Dark Souls.

I wanted to use KB+M but the default camera movement with the mouse is so ridiculously bad. I tried the mouse fix but I still didn't think it was very good. You should really buy a controller just for Dark Souls.

Pretty much. You could see the devs put some care in creating the M/KB controls for Batman and Dead Space (especially for Batman), whereas you can clearly see FROM didn't give a shit when they did so for Dark Souls.

Thanks for the impressions, but if that's the case then I guess I will just skip it.

Does the release of the new DSFix have anything to do with me being unable to launch Dark Souls from Steam? ("Has stopped working..." error)

Keep in mind, I'm still on DSFix 1.9

The latest patch by FROM has broken DSfix 1.9. You need to disable thte framerate unlocker to continue.

Just copy over the latest DSfix and you'll be good to go.

I upgraded my PC (i7-3930K and GTX680) and strangely Dark Souls + DSFix runs at only 15 fps in window mode. At fullscreen it plays fine at 30 fps. I used to get 30fps in window mode on my old PC with an older version of DSFix.

The mouse fix does work well, it makes the game perfectly playable using KB/M.

Does the intro skip work in Windows 8 yet?

Mind you, I haven't been able to try any version higher than 1.9, so it might be fixed already.
I haven't done any particular fixes for Windows 8 (I couldn't, I don't use it).

You should be getting 60fps with dsfix with very small fluctuations in blighttown/demons ruins.
SMAA set at 4, dof set at 810, ssao at 3 at 1920x1080, you could probably maintain 60 fps downscaling as well to be honest

The mouse before the fix was the weirdest thing. It works like that: There are 2 states to camera movement. I call it binary camera movement. It's pretty much if you switched the camera from analog to digital using a pad, but weirder. So it's 0 when you don't move your mouse at all simulating not moving analog stick on a gamepad. And it's 1 when you move your mouse, as if you moved your analog stick completely into a direction. No middleground, it's either no movement, or 100% movement using analog. So the way you move your camera around with your mouse isn't about how fast do you move your mouse, it's about for how long you move your mouse in a direction, also it's veeeeeery unprecise, walking on narrow ledges is awkward.
