[UK Physical Charts] Death Stranding 2 launches 66% lower than Death Stranding 1, 33% lower than Astro Bot

Death Stranding 2 was No.1 in the UK physical charts last week. Its launch sales were -66% lower than Death Stranding 1... but different eras. It's a far more digital market today. It's 33% lower than Astro Bot's launch, but that was also a physical heavy release, too.

This is physical sales compared to the first game. This means nothing because now everyone buys games digitally

Need more data for true comparison but IMO it'll not be surprised that DS2 sale less than the first one. Very cleaving game. The first game filtered a lot of people out (myself included, I didn't even watch any trailers or news of the second game, 0 interest)

He is so apologetic in the tweet. Why was AstroBot so heavily physical compared to DS2?

You'd think he'd give some actual analysis and not just randomness.

Completely pointless without the full numbers available to us, and could he have worded that any more poorly ffs? He sounds illiterate.

I guess because physical was super cheap, at least in Germany. You could already buy it for <40 Euros in 2024 and digital is still 70 Euros.

I really have no interest in QWOP 3 myself, but come on… That's an incredibly misleading title (even by Gaf standards)

In the ever-growing physical games market of the UK?
Tragic.
What do you think, will it come to Game Pass?

I hope the game does well. The 2nd game fixes most of the issues I had with the first one. Kojima really should have let the first game cook a bit more to work out some of the story, pacing, and combat.

Yeah sorry everyone, I reported the thread almost right as soon as it was posted for a title change. But my bad for not being careful with the original. I hope it gets updated soon.

No worries. People shouldn't assume bad intentions right away. My comment was that it was a genuine mistake.

Having digital-only early access definitely helped digital sales, biggest Kojima fans surely picked that option.

I expect the game to sell worse than DS1. I mean it plays roughly the same (even with the changes and improvements to the formula) so if you didn't enjoy slow courier gameplay you're not suddenly going to be sold. And even with the game being so user-friendly towards newbies I don't see a scenario in which someone buys DS2 without playing the first game.

I think it will sell similar or even better than the first. Tne first one got introduced to a lot of people through subscription services( and even epic game giveaways). I also only played as it was part of ps plus.

Liked the first game enough that I ended up buying the sequel at launch. I expect a lot of people who are in the same boat.

Sales good or no, I bought the game day 1 , enjoying the game , no regrets

Back to building roads now
Btw I thought the first game launched in the covid period ?That may help the ds1 bigger sales

The death of physical media is here.
Only if you keep repeating that bs.
Games ship on discs and even if they require downloads, it's still far better deal. You won't them and that shit is not tied to an account over which you have no control whatsoever

Physical sales were much more relevant at the start of the generation and declined as the years went by. These two games are 6 years apart. A lot changed in that time. That being said, I'm interested to see how the sequel's sales ultimately shake out. The first game had a mixed reaction at first yet somehow managed to be looked at somewhat more fondly as time went by, it seemed. Similar to Days Gone. Coincidentally, both released in 2019. The sequel is being praised right out of the gate, so I'll be curious if time passing and high praise for it can overcome the taste the first one left with a lot of people.

Let's see what the digital sales are like, I'm pretty sure it's gonna sell less anyway, not everyone that bought DS1 is going to return, it wasn't everyones cuppa tea.
And according to the Insomniac leak DS sold double the amount on physical Vs Digital so it's an interesting contrast.
But I'm guessing the Collectors Edition comes under digital as it doesn't come with the disc.
tbf I've changed my buying habits, I used to buy at launch to get the Deluxe Edition/Steelbook ect
You know the edition that came with extras for the game and things physically like artwork books and stuff and a nice Steelbooks.
Don't really care for the statues and stuff.
But Sony has removed any need to do that now, just buy it when it comes down in price.
You're not missing anything other then playing it at a later date and you're saving money.
I'm a regular at HighDef Ninja and they have the same attitude too and I'm sure others do too.
The preorder incentive publishers used for many years is lost on physical buyers.
The Deluxe Edition is usually digital now, the Collectors Edition don't even come with a Disc, they do stupid shit like including a Steelbook and a digital code...
It all dumb and it's all just to push you towards digital and for the most part it's working.
The day physical truly dies is the day when you'll see their true intentions as there won't be no turning back.

Well you expect a drop in physical sales from the first game but to be much lower than Astrobot points to a bunch not returning for the second game.

Feels like a game that was interesting as a one off first game, audience quite split on those that thought it worked and those that didn't so quite a risky exclusive follow up. Also I think cost will affect people that are still kind of interested, it is something different for a game but they will check it out when cheaper.

Expect to see it on other platforms soon

DS2 is definitely going to retain a large physical market on PS, so this isn't a meaningless stat.

I'm going to bet that this debut will be somewhat softer than DS1. And if not, it will have very short legs, Metaphor Refantazio style. There were still some people hoping Kojima hadn't actually hyped them up with a literal walking simulator, and I bet a decent number of sales were double dips when it came to PC. There is absolutely zero question that this will be coming to both PC and Xbox, and I wouldn't be surprised if it comes to the Switch 2.

UK is more digital than physical here than before, especially on the console. I wouldn't think too much with this stat.

Im from the UK and I brought disk last game and went digital this time.

The game is excellent and there's nothing else quite like it by any other studio. I loved the first one to.

This game was never going to sell as much as the 1st one since a lot of people didnt like it... its a very niche game that people like to pretend is popular and good reviews from the zombie access media wasn't going to change this.

You can have all the analysis you want if you engage his company and are willing to pay. The rest of us rely on scraps. Same with Piscatella, they've got to make a living.

He will have the figures, and if he says Astrobot leant towards physical media in the UK there's no reason to disbelieve him.
