Death Stranding |OT| Keep Walking, Nothing To See Here

I've been wanting to replay this recently, but I keep telling myself to wait for the PC release. Hopefully we see something on it soon. I can see this ending up as one of my top 5 this gen - something about it just really clicked with me.

finally got around to completing the game for my first time

That fucking beach part was the worst filler ...outside of that i really enjoyed it even though it took me about 6 months to complete due to getting bored on parts

Same. I thought the ziplines and trucks were going to help but of course the next missions are all in the mountains full of rocks and shit so I'm back on foot with all my shitty cargo on my back. Too many roadblocks to make it enjoyable.

I actually found that the zip-lines eliminated too much of the challenge because I could optimize the shit out of any delivery route. I had lots of fun setting my network, climbing to hazardous locations and trudging out in the middle of nowhere to connect routes.

But once the network was finished all my deliveries turned into zipping door to door.

I certainly can't fault anyone that were frustrated with the gameplay loop, lack of fast travel options and such, but to me that's what made the game different and fun. It's never (rarely) about trying to survive but how to get across a bullshit world without falling and eating shit.

I really hope that future games that take inspiration from it manage to find more ways to make world traversal more fun, varied and challenging.

So I’ve finally taken a leap into this game. Have been very cautious approaching it.

I’ve just delivered the president for cremation, which is what 1.5hrs in? Apart from Guillermo del Toro‘s B grade acting I’m super impressed. The desolation, the immersion, the soundtrack.

I hope the game maintain this forward momentum and doesn’t deteriorate from here.

Thats not Del Toro doing the voice or motion capture. They just used his likeness.

some general tips:

- making deliveries expands the chiral network. this enables you to build more things in the area.
- when you start leveling up delivery places, then you also start seeing more structures placed by others in the area. this is where the social aspects come in, these are placed by other people playing the game.
- be a good neighbor, give and get likes!
- if you see a package in the wild and deliver it to the intended destination, it's a good way to level up a delivery spot outside of doing missions.
- if you want to save your game at any time (it doesn't tend to auto save unless you are at a delivery station) all you have to do is hit circle and sit down. the game instantly saves. do this when you make a lot of progress on a route, it sucks to lose ~15 minutes of progress from a bad tumble.

Other tips:

- Start building roads ASAP. You get metals and ceramics for undertaking deliveries. It makes the second section so, so much easier.
- Rest often in private areas because some people won't let you level up until they've sent you messages about some kinda bullshit (these arrive after sleep)
- In the snowy area, once you get ziplines always make sure to carry a whole bunch of PCC 2's around. Go deliver something, get it connected to the chiral network, then build ziplines to wherever you need to get back to. It makes it a shit ton easier getting back to the original destination at a later date.
- As above, build a circle of ziplines extending from the Doctor, Mountain Knot City, Heartman's Lab, Robotocist, First Prepper, Spiritualist, Mountaineer and back down to the Mountain Knot City. You have no idea how much easier it makes delivering in that area. Extend it to the Photographer when you're ready.
- Kill all the MULES. Nothing bad happens ;)

Holy shit, this game is fucking amazing. I never ever considered for myself to be so surprised, I’ve seen so much that just no longer happens. Can’t believe I sat on it for so long. None of us have ever played anything like this before.. An open world that actually is the gameplay. Reminds me of Movies like Oblivion and Moon. The atmosphere is so engrossing, I can’t stop playing.

I have never been a big fan of MGS, and shrugged off ‘Kojima is a genius’ as fan hyperbole, yet here wa are. Phenomenal.

one more tip: you can kind of beeline your way to Chapter 3 to unlock all the gear. just do all the missions for Sam. having better gear will make your deliveries easier and more fun. you can always go back and do deliveries later when you have better gear.

is this game worth the $23 they're asking for right now?

especially if ur someone who hates game play that mainly consist of walking and balancing items on your back for hours?

I mean, that's the overwhelming gameplay in it. Watch some videos if you arent sure. It's certainly unique, and good looking.

I’m about to buy this, but can someone tell me if “help” from online players ruins it now?
I want the game to be challenging and find routes on my own and not just get by because of everyone else placing ladders and roads for me—is there a way to turn off help from other players?

I just don’t want there to be the route laid out for me by previous players and wish I had just bought the game at launch to avoid this.

The game balances what it shows you. You won’t see everything created thus far.

Also you get no help from online when going to a destination for a first time because the network isn’t established till you activate it at the destination.

No fear to jump in anytime.

The game is still single player, and you still have to do the leg work. There are barriers to seeing other player's constructions in your game, and the only way to increase the amount of online content is to play the game more.

You'll find roughly the same amount of assistance as most other players have.

the way the online stuff is integrated is seamless. your first time on a trip will be you alone. as you make deliveries you level up the destinations. as that happens you see more and more stuff people build to help. thus you are rewarded by other players for making the difficult first trips by having an easier time the more you play

i dont believe videos give you a good idea. its really a unique experience.. especialy when ur on a walk and all of sudden music starts to play and you are all alone out there, doing your mission. its super immersive. If thats something u could enjoy, get it

Yes this game needs to be tried by oneself to ‘get it’. I had no interest from the promos, the reviews. It looked like yet another open world filled with meaningless fetch quests. I fired it up on a whim for a change of pace from Modern Warfare and was an instant convert.

Got the plat last night. It was very easy to do so because you can look up which constructions or memory chips you are missing through the menus.

Also there are three hidden memory chips, journals from Higgs. I was missing part 2.

It was a lot of fun to revisit the game. The world is so calming and otherworldly and nice to visit. Really looking forward to double dipping for 60fps on the PC release.

Pc users are in for a treat. But game relies heavily on analog controls, so needs controller.

Ok, so I picked this up on sale a few days before TLOU2 came out and knowing this is pretty lengthy, combined with not being able to help myself jumping straight into TLOU2, I thought i'd wait until I was done with that before starting DS. Which I've now done.

So a couple of hours in, at the end of chapter one and I'm struggling. I've heard it picks up in chapter 3 so I'm determined to get there at least, but so far... yeesh...

I honestly feel like I've spent more time watching then playing. I know this is sometimes the case with Kojimas games, but in MGS at least, some of the cutscenes were sweet action scenes. Here, mostly so far its some badly acted nonsense, to the point I've nearly dozed off during a few. I'm not usually one to pick up apart writing, especially in this medium, but there's been plenty of cringeworthy lines too. And Daryl from TWD seems exactly like... Daryl from TWD so far.

And why the fuck if I'm going to cremate someone so important, why wouldn't these guys, I dunno, maybe help me requisition a vehicle? Nah its all good, I'll just piggyback the corpse up a mountainside, stumbling around everywhere and dropping her on her dead head a bunch of times. Def the best man for the job.

Anyway, I'll keep on slogging through until it supposedly picks up. The setting and world itself seems pretty interesting at least, it all looks pretty nice and Stumbly Stu'ing my way around the world can be kinda relaxing I guess. Plus having a game where gameplay doesn't equal kill copious amounts of shit, is kinda what I'm after especially coming of the gorefest that TLOU2 was. And being able to take a dump in a videogame is a definite plus as well

So yeah, just sounding off some. Hopefully if I drop another post here, it'll have a slightly different tone

I ended up skipping on this when it initially launched, then built my first gaming PC and as luck would have it, it was announced for PC.

Me and the wife have also been watching Hannibal on Netflix so I'm in the mood for some Mads.

Same accept ps5 version here.

I platinumed it so did a shit ton of optional tasks. It was still fun but I'm looking forward to just ploughing throw the main story with no distractions. Any word on a new game plus or ps5 patch?

My main piece of advice would be to take your time with the game. Plowing straight through it is not reccommended. The cut scene heavy stuff is mostly for the first few hours and while they still happen at a decent pace (if you're doing main missions) its to a much lesser extent.

If the game doesn't grab you by chapter 3-4 I would say just drop it it probably won't click. It's a weird fucking game that isn't for everyone and I totally get when people don't like it.

Sony would be insane to not port the game to PS5. They haven't announced it yet but if it doesnt happen within the first 6 months of the systems life I'll be shocked.

It was 30fps on ps4 yes? If so 60fps plus some graphical upgrades make sense.

I wasn't even annoyed with the early stuff in the game and still ended up getting really annoyed with it before Chapter 3 came along. I actually liked the early cutscenes. Do with that information what you will :messenger_tears_of_joy:

It's a rollercoaster of a game. It gets really good in parts, then really bad, then decent, then back to bad, ect. By the time the story finally ended, I didn't know if I even liked it. There are certain aspects of the gameplay I did like from a grindy aspect, but it's impossible to say if you'll feel the same.

Delivering things in good condition from one point to another point is the gameplay.

I've been on the fence about this game since release. It totally looks like an experience I'd appreciate, but the reviews from even the "good" reviewers scared me away.

This thread has finally convinced me otherwise with all your super insightful posts! The depth of analysis here really can't be found anywhere else.

Yet another massive game I shouldn't have time for added to my backlog :messenger_grinning_sweat:

You still may hate it. To narrow further, I think possible people that crown FarCry 2 as the pinnacle of the series may lean more into this type of game. It’s the way it makes you feel, the immersion of the world.

The question is, which graphical upgrades we will see? Sadly, there are no reviews and no videos besides the pc trailer.

I excpect a pc release like MGS5, that will run and look great. But without any big improvements. Which would be totally fine to me, but I woul dlike to see the game in action before double dipping.

Give it a try! I went in blind and loved it. It is so different and the gameplay loop gets you hooked real fast. Progression also feels rewarding and meaningful.

I really love Mud Runner, for me this is an actual competent Mud Runner, I just wish the truck mechanics were a bit more like Mud Runner, instead of "fudging the physics". I'm playing on Hard and it's a good time... until Chapter 4, fuck that entire thing, what a pile of shit, I had to change the difficulty mode for that bit, I hope there aren't too many more parts like that.

OMFG the fucking thing does not support DSR, are you kidding me? I have it enabled in drivers, use it in every game (the reason I got 2080Ti despite having 1080p plasma). Death Stranding only allows resolution to 1080p in the menu. FFS I hope there is a way to force 4K via some ini file or they patch it.
