Destination America cancels all TNA programmes from end of September

A quick breakdown of what's happening:

  • TNA programming will continue to air until around late September or so, which would be the end of the third quarter.
  • This was supposed to be kept a secret because it doesn't do anyone any good to know this far ahead of time that the promotion is dead in the water.
  • The decision was made because Destination America wasn't satisfied with the ratings. Viewers were good for the station average but not good enough to justify how much money they were spending on it.
  • Advertising was also an issue, as pro wrestling continues to struggle on that front. TNA does not have the luxury WWE does in the sense that the USA Network pays for the programming that delivers strong enough ratings to keep them the number one rated cable network in prime time, which they can use to sell advertising on without even mentioning pro wrestling.

Man... I feel really sorry for them.

Used to be a big fan of TNA, started watching as Team Canada disbanded and it was genuinely much better than WWE. Ended up drifting off from it near the end of the Hogan Bischoff era due to getting annoyed with how they were running the promotion but did dip back in and out every now and then but this is still sad news to hear.

Its just such a shame that because of some really shitty management decisions what could have been a truly great promotion ended up being squandered and never reached the heights it was capable of.

I would say i hope they sort something out but from all the horror stories i have read about pay etc. i think its best that the talent just go to other promotions and would probably have a better life for themselves.

I loved TNA before they decided to sign even more washed up wrestlers.

The years when they had Jay Lethal, Sonjay Dutt, AJ Styles and amazing midcard talent like Alex Kozlov were so much fun.

I feel a little bad for TNA. If they are indeed dead in the water then I don't see how this is anything other than another nail in the coffin for pro wrestling.

While WWE may be sitting comfortable the fact that no other promotion can get even the slightest foothold can't be good news for them.

No doubt Jeff Jarratt while try and use this to launch TNA 2.0 (or whatever the fuck it's called, GFW?) while will probably suffer a similar fate in time.

Good riddance. They lasted way longer than they should have.

Best thing TNA did was the X-Division and even that was just a poor man's WCW cruiserweight division tbh.

No WCW cruiserweight title match touches the Joe-Styles-Daniels match that main evented that PPV that one time. In prestige or quality.

Honestly, it's barely memorable to me. Aside from the spots, I didn't think it was that great or compelling.

WCW's cruiserweight division with Eddie, Rey, Jericho and all the international guys was far more interesting. In my opinion anyway.

I doubt this will be the actual end of TNA, which kinda makes this feel like a match called by Michael Cole: "TNA is down! There's the cover! IT'S ALL OVER!! no, TNA kicks out at two..."

I think character wise, Guerrero and Jericho were absolutely better. But Jericho's reign is... the matches aren't that great save for Guerrera at Superbrawl and Malenko at Slamboree. Mysterio's match quality was great, but some of the others... they seemed to have a great top-tier, but the further you went down the more you realised that the best were great and the rest were kinda sloppy.

TNA had some dross, but stuff like Senshi-Sabin or Joe vs Styles is really, really good. Problem is they go through patches where the matches don't mean shit. It's what made Spud having the title awesome - the dude fucking clearly saw it as a badge of honour.

Yeah, but he says it when it's actually over. Michael Cole says something like that every single pin attempt, although mostly "this could be it!" when it's obviously not.

I think it's just about done.

Remember when they were bold enough to think they could put their show on Monday nights?

I really don't know how they are going to get out of this mess. I know that they were contemplating in moving to the UK but doing a special show in the UK compared to regular shows are two different things, and unless they get massive support from SKY TV to push them as their champion wrestling show besides WWE, I cannot see TNA surviving.

It's like...what the hell were destination America expecting. Their numbers are not bad at all, all things consideredm

They're happy with the ratings. They're not happy with the cost of the program to get those ratings apparently and no advertiser wants to advertise while TNA is on.

That's what i thought after Spike cancelled it. but they keep surviving. But i now believe the end is nigh.

On one hand it's sad to see another wrestling promotion go down and people lose their jobs. On the other, TNA has been one of the worst run companies I've ever seen and probably shouldn't have lasted this long.

I think people are overly nostalgic for WCW/ECW, which were FAR worse run. WCW from 1999 to 2001 was an embarrassing company, with patches of good. ECW was... it tapped into a cultural zeitgeist, but the actual running of the company was shockingly inept.

I haven't paid attention to TNA in about 10 years or so; if this means TNA is dead, do they have any people that have a chance to be successful in the WWE? Or are they basically WWE cast offs and smaller guys that won't get a fair shot?

AJ Styles is gone now isn't he? And I know Kurt Angle was wanting to return but the WWE wouldn't touch him since he still hasn't gotten over his drug and injury issues.

Oh yeah ECW and WCW were logisticly far worse (I just remembered the month WCW lost like 60 million I think?), I guess I'm a bit biased as I started watching wrestling in 2003 so my experience with WCW/ECW is mainly documentaries and books about them.

Yes. The ad rates for wrestling is so low, regardless of the rating. Also I guess Bischoff and some other people are suing TNA for non-payment. The ship seems to be sinking quickly.

Samoa Joe just showed up on WWE NXT last night.

TNA since it's inception has always brought in "old" talent but the "old" talent wasn't past their prime in the early days of TNA and i still believe that 2002-2005 were the best years of TNA, specially 02-04 when they were doing weekly ppv's.

People can shit on Jarret and Russo but i enjoyed what TNA was doing those few years more then i have with what WWE has been doing for the last decade and i am actually really excited for JJ's new promotion.

Vincent K should do everything he can to prop up TNA somehow. The WWE is at it's best when it has competition. Without it, they're lazy and continue to pump out terrible product.

Vince never thought TNA was competition. Hell, he barely flinched when TNA was on Monday.
