Destiny Gameplay Premiere

Probably this wasn't the best looking game at E3, and the gameplay might look slow and boring as any WorldOfWarcraft 5minutes demo, but I loved it and this is my personal E3 Winner alongside The Division (gameplay), Sunset Overdrive (concept) and Bayonetta2 (new hairstyle)

Have there been any details about what the hubs are/mean? I know they were shown at the reveal some but I'm having trouble wrapping my head around it right now, beyond sort of a themed Home space.

I imagine that's what they will be. An safe area for inventory management, social interaction, perhaps trading items or an auction house, a store of items and so forth. And probably story related NPC's as well.

This is what I expect as well. I think the Last City will be ammo purchases, weapon purchases, clothing/armor and so on. You'll gather with your friends and take on missions. Or gather around the virtual campfire and tell stories of past victories and defeats, that and talk total shit.

One thing that hasn't really been talked about much since the initial reveal has been the mobile aspects of the game. I have always thought it would be awesome with MMOish games to have a mobile app allowing you to continue gaining experience for your character, or check on things in game while just out and about in town.
Or at work.
Even if it is only a fraction of the experience you would earn in the game proper. I know they haven't said much but this is definitely something I am hoping for and sounds like a route they are going. Hopefully there will be an Android app to go along with IOS.

We know Playstation will have its app on Android/iOS both, and MS has Smartglass on its devices. Its just a matter of whether the game will use it.

But I agree. I would like to see some integration. If nothing else a clan messaging/planning interface and perhaps inventory and shop/auction interfaces. Things that are mostly text based and not taxing on the device and that are time sinks generally that are not "gameplay".

DBO highlighted an interview on AusGamers here:

http://www.ausgamers.com/features/read/3321493

Some interesting bits:

AusGamers: Can you explain in a bit more detail, how the persistent world, and the connections to those worlds actually works? You mentioned public areas, and wrapping my head around the idea of who gets to go in what area and when... I was talking to the Watch Dogs guys, and they were saying that basically what happens is that one person loads their game, and another person’s game sort of overlaps that so that they can then interact with one another, but it’s just a smart system that does it automatically behind the scenes. I just don’t really know how it’s going to work from your end.

Chris: Yeah. I can give you a specific example: if you look at the Sony stage demo of Destiny. Now in that environment, we only had seven players playing on stage, so it’s not like it’s a smart system trying to find everybody that’s going in there... but just to illustrate the principles that are going on there.

So it starts out, if you’re playing, and it’s just you by yourself, you’re in a private area of the world. There are a lot of the private areas of the world, we do that so we can use all of those cinematic storytelling techniques that we know and love. You can do that when it’s your game, and you can change the world in all kinds of really meaningful ways there.

Then your friends can join you, with drop-in/drop-out co-op, so as Joe Staten was playing through there in the E3 stage demo, he had one friend join, and then another friend join, and they had three people playing still just in that private area. Then they went into an area of that world that is a public area, and those are areas of the experience in Destiny, where as your Fireteam moves towards those areas, the game is finding other Fireteams that are in that public area, and then matchmaking people together, and putting them in the same game.

But you’re still on your mission, and you’re still able to just ignore whatever’s going on there, and just keep going on your way; and sometimes you’ll have objectives in these public areas, where you’ll have to complete some mission objective there. Or sometimes you might just be travelling through them, and you’re like “Oh, there’s a sweet public event going on; I’m going to stop and go check that out”, and maybe you’ll meet some new friends, and hang out with them for a while, or whatever else, but then you can go back to your mission if you want to.

So I guess, if you have a good connection in a well populated area you will be much more likely to see public stuff happening often, where as if you like in the middle of nowhere with a shitty connection, you might not see public event quite as often, but at least they will be quality.

The Fallen that we were fighting in the E3 demo are from the House of Devils; they’re just one of the Houses of The Fallen, and not one of the houses are friendly to each other. So you’ll get a chance to learn more about those relationships between the characters, and between the combatant races over time.

This is interesting and hints at three (or more) way battles like in Halo. I would guess this also hints at the possibility of some Fallen becoming friendlies, like certain events in Halo.

AusGamers: So from the perspective of no UI, is that a huge challenge to have the player be able to actively obtain quests and drop-in/drop-out with other players? How did you guys approach that without being cumbersome to the visual side for the player?

Chris: I’d say no UI is our goal, in the sense that we don’t want to put anything in there that takes players out of the experience. So that means that when you go into a public area, there’s no UI saying “Do you want to enter the public area, yes or no?”; if you are entering the area, you are entering the area.

This is cool. I'm really interested in seeing how this pans out. I totally get how it would work to opt out an event by not going 'over there' but I can see it being more tricky to keep U.I. to a minimum when partying up with other players who are not friends, or when wanting to leave a fireteam / party and go off by yourself. I really like the idea of virtually no U.I. though.

Chris: The particular weapon you’re talking about is the exotic machinegun, the Thunder Lord I think, so that particular weapon has a fairly linear upgrade path, but there are others that are much less linear in the game. Some of these upgrade trees have got choices, where you’re going to have to decide “Am I going to do this, or am I doing to do that?”; you can’t have all of the upgrades.

So for example: I could have a pulse rifle and say “Well, do I want my pulse rifle to have more ammo capacity, so I can shoot for longer without reloading? Or do I want my reload time to be shorter, so I can reload more effectively?” -- that’s one example of a choice you might make that will change your playstyle. Some players might go “Well, I’m going to be going into competitive multiplayer a lot more often, so I’m going to go one way”, or “I want a bigger clip, so I can go another way on a weapon”.
This is quite a strong indication that custom loadouts are going to be used in mutliplayer. I am guessing this could upset a few of the long term Halo guys who did not enjoy the 'randomness' of not knowing what exactly your opponent had at their disposal in multiplayer.

Thanks for posting the info broony. God, I'm so excited for this game.

It'll be interesting to see something of this scale coming out so close to the next gen platform launches. Very ambitious for new hardware.

Great interview with some excellent tidbits.

I don't see how this could be upsetting. Long term Halo fans aren't expecting Halo from Destiny, so they shouldn't be upset. Disappointed? Sure, because they'd like to see another arena-style shooter from Bungie.

Yeah, just from loitering in some of the Halo threads on here it seems some people were pinning their hopes on Destiny after they fell out of love with Reach / H4, but it looks like this will not be the game for them.

For me it's all about the co-op story / random events. Competitive will be something I have a play with now and then but I will mostly be off adventuring with friends.

While I am extremely excited for this game, I am already mentally preparing for this to be a Fall 2014 release at the minimum. Ambition and execution take time to sync up.

Yeah I don't expect to see it before then, maybe a public beta in summer 2014.
That sounds about right. Bungie has used betas quite a bit recently and given the newer platforms, they will need the data.

It will be interesting to see how the current and next-gen versions compare. I get the feeling it will be very challenging to design all of the features hinted at in the Sony conference demo using PSN on PS3 without Bungie having to create something like Insomniac did for Resistance to get people together and organized for matches.

I'm only pinning hopes on Destiny to be more engaging than what Halo 4 has offered. If that means less multiplayer and more co-op modes that I can steer towards, then color me excited.

Another area I'm curious about is group size. I know they mentioned a fire team being 3 players but hopefully that will be for the missions, public events. It would be awesome if the higher level raid stuff would allow for more players in a squad. Back in the Halo 3 glory days it seemed like we didn't have problem filling up a group or two of 8. It would be a bummer having to rotate or being the odd man out of a 3 person max squad.

Wait, we're only supposed to answer good questions? Shit!

Get ta typing, type boy! ;)

EDIT: oh nevermind you answered it.

Yup, The Tower sounds like exactly what I was hoping for. Much more than just a place to dance and use SPACE MAGIC!

No, asking bad questions is just a privilege reserved for DBO Gold members.

Other benefits include:
  • A digital copy of any site artwork. (Right-click, "Save As")
  • Use of the "isnotcanon" URL lengthener.
  • Cloud storage. (Only supports Cirrus, Stratus, and Cumulonimbus.)
  • Access to the front page.

I saw the ADS and said "NOPE". Fuck you Bungie.

More seriously though, the whole fight with the tank looked extremely stupid and this was probably one of the most disappointing gameplay reveals ever.

EDIT: This video leaves a much better impression: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mN8f14eMn-I

But I seriously hate
ADS
Loot
Weapon Upgrades

And I'm not very optimistic about a really great story emerging from this "connected" experience.

That seamless private party to public event stuff sounds incredibly ambitious and could be pretty amazing if it works as designed. One of Bungie's overlooked strengths is this kind of cutting edge party and networking tech.

All I'm really hoping is that the story is more Marathon than Halo, and I'll be 100% on board.

When will we get the confirmation that space combat's in ?
This is the only news I'm waiting to fully join the hype train.
I mean, we can customize our own ship...

I know, there is plenty of time for such an announcement, but I won't be THAT excited 'til I read this news.

If they can get it working, it will be awesome. Being able to run around on your own, see something crazy going down and join in, could be awesome fun.

Some MMO's have tried this and it can be good fun, so I wonder how much Bungie will tweak things to get it right.

The video above said it was not a space combat sim, so I am guessing no ship travel or customization. I think that will be reserved for quick travel from planet to planet.

It's not as extreme as Space Combat Sim or Quick Travel. There's a lot they could do in between. For example, they could offer an on rails ship combat system if they're so inclined. SWTOR used a system like this for it's space combat.

Well, I haven't watched DBO's interview yet, but ship customization was confirmed when the game was announced.

Well, they certainly know people love customizing stuff, so I do hope they go crazy with it. Now I don't know if they mean space-ship stuff or just you regular "mounts."

Just listened to the answer, and it's really vague.
But they wouldn't allow us to customize our ship if the only place we can share it is this screen:

DestinyMenu_zps3a7c3751.png

Though I guess it could also be in cutscenes, just like Noble 6 in Halo: Reach.

Before the gameplay premiere, the game looked like it was going to innovate everything. All it looks like now is borderlands with a better setting. From the gameplay videos, all it seems like it will be is just a lootfest diablo style which isnt a bad thing, but Bungie is hyping it up like its revolutionizing the genre of shooters which it really isnt.

My main concern is not seeing the Xbox One version. Really need to see it in action. If they can live up to their promises, it could be ea game I will play for ages.

I'm worried that its potential for future updates might be significantly limited due to its cross-gen nature - the first retail release will probably have to work on 4-gig 360s.
That, and the leaked ten-year plan being scheduled around "sequels" and major expansions.

If anything the initial game may be cross-gen then sequels will be next gen only. You have to remember that this wont come until sometime in 2014, and then an expansion likely in 2015 and small DLC around it. So by the time we get to a sequel we are looking at 2016, by which time I dont imagine many games will come out for PS3/360 anymore.

But then im getting destiny for bungie world building skills and dungeon raiding..
