I'm starting to wonder how much of my disappointment with this game has to do with my expectations for the game or some measure of smoke and mirrors (by this I mean an implied level of content) on Bungie's part during the beta and alpha.
For example, here are some of my thoughts during the beta:
Oh okay, so this intro is just the shortened version right? There's gonna be a ton more explanation in the full game and they'll tell me who these blue people/exo robots are and they'll have way more fleshed out story cutscenes like the one with The Speaker right?
Nope, it's the same intro, and also you don't really get told much about the Awoken until way into the game, same for Exo's. You get told almost everything during loading screen exposition speeches which makes it easy to tune out and you don't see anyone on the different planets. Seriously, there's no NPC outpost full of characters or anything on any of the planets, which seems even weirder now that I think about it.
I can't wait to see the other Earth areas!
Gonna say this one was on me, and also I remember them saying there was one area for each planet before the game came out.
Oh wow, they have this cool looking but somewhat shallow character creator? And they put in voices for all different versions of the guardians? I thought they were gonna go all silent protagonist and never get to see their faces.
Yep you get to hear your character for all of 10-12 lines of dialogue in the whole game, and you get to see your character's face for about 4-5 cutscenes, two of which you can't really repeat again. Also you can't really get a good look at your face cause of that shitty depth of field filter that blocks it out when you get up close.
Don't get me wrong, the game at least still plays great but there's also a ton of flaws in this game that make it seem like a poorly designed game or just flat out unfinished, I haven't decided which one yet.
On the whole "mmo or not" thing, I feel like Destiny straddles the fence during your whole progression to level 20, but then when you hit the level cap, it totally goes full on MMO. I hit 20 and got my first few pieces of light armor and thought "oh okay, so you basically used the DC universe online combat rating system, okay I know how this works, granted, now I'm doing it in a game with far worse social systems and features, but sure."
All that being said, I'm probably gonna level up my Hunter and my Warlock and call it a day. After that I'll only come back to it if they really improve things in the DLC (gonna wait before buying it) and also put out some MMO type patches that do stuff like improving UI/Adding much needed features.
Also I don't see how Bungie's extra events are gonna fix anything, unless they have some extra strikes and maps hidden away for high level players, it's just gonna be the same maps/strikes in a different package.
