Destiny - The Taken King |OT| Time to Explain

I am surprised by how much more difficult Bungie has made these quests to solo. The daily heroic was difficult enough to solo at sub-240 light level, but even some of the quests are quite challenging to solo. This is so much different than Vanilla Destiny, it's like a different game. I am loving the challenge.

Early Story spoiler (in a Destiny Thread no less!) question.
Is the Queen dead? Asshole Brother too? If so how does the Reef function, is there a new Awoken Monarch?

If you read some of the grimoire, its highly implied that they aren't. The prince is alive. He is on Mars, repairing his ship. He says he can sense her. Also In one of the Taken War missions, it is mentioned that search parties never found her body and picked up the queens transmission signal.

I made it to level 40, and I've got a 200+ light level. I can never seem to find decent looking class items. Now that I'm able to accumulate Legendary Marks, I'm hoping to buy some of the Cryptarch engrams.

Let's say I ONLY have vanilla Destiny.

I need both previous expansions to play this one but that bundle is 80 bucks. The Legendary Edition comes with everything and the vanilla game.

So I buy the same game twice in order to save 20 dollars?

I think Game stop has a trade in deal where they will give you $20 off with the trade of Destiny towards The Taken King Legendary Edition so it would only cost you $40

I kind of agree with this too. I am not playing with my buddies as much right now because we are in different places on quests etc.

Patrol, Strikes, Weekly, Daily and Nightfall is a different story though.

Daily is easy, strikes are fine with Matchmaking, and Nightfall is longer absolutely necessary.

Besides you make a lot of friends just by walking in the tower and meeting people.

LFG is also great for meeting new friends. IRL friends won't play the game always the same time you do and take away your freedom to explore.

Also I think I finished the final story quest available. There is about 15-20 hours of these things.

Lemme ask you folks. I quit during the original release of the game at the Venus missions, because I was so god damn bored of every story mission having no plot, no setup, and just being walk over to the thing, hold a button, and then get swarmed by enemies. There weren't any interesting sidequests, with actual content, just patrol missions about shoot 10 of these or what have you, and didn't care for the multiplayer.

Has 2.0 fixed any of these problems or what? Would it be worth it for me grabbing the Taken King, because the early game has been "fixed" or is it still a total slog?

That's not a good idea. Just keep playing. You will get tons of blues and their light gets higher and higher.

I saw a pic around here of someone with 290 light wearing nothing but blues.

Almost every major issue players had with the original vanilla release of Destiny has been fixed with The Taken King. The missions are varied and cool. The writing is really well done here finally! The strikes play more like mini raids now, there's tons of crucible game types and in general, just alot of fun and neat stuff to do. I've been a day 1 player and never left and have watched it evolve in front of me. I highly recommend it!

Caved in and bought it /sigh

Running around the tower and meeting every NPC vendor while they thank you for being with them for a year and give you something for your loyalty is surreal. Cryptarch also gave me Monte Carlo from green engram, the only exotic that was missing from my collection (besides HoW stuff).

No one would be playing it if it was a slog. The Taken King quests are the best quests Destiny has ever had. It's not to say that these are the best quests ever made, but they are much more interesting than the vanilla Destiny quests that felt like you were going through the motions for no reason.

Yeah, that's what I hear, that the taken king quests are much better. But has the vanilla content been improved? Because I deleted my character and had never planned on going back, and it's been so long I'd want to restart anyway. So I'd be going through the game from the beginning once again. Am I just going to get tired at those original missions again or have they also been improved as well and supplemented with decent side content.

Cross posting from the Community thread the "Method for raising your light level quickly".

Ok so I warped up my light level today from like 250 to 280 using this method. It has been posted before here and there but I'm not sure whether many people are really doing it. Also not sure if the method really works or just placebo but it doesn't hurt.

The key idea of the method is that the new loot system gives you a sort of gear check when dropping blues or decrypting engrams. So the better your gear, the better more higher power drops you get.

So basically what you do is collect a bunch of engrams by playing the game normally. Then go to the cryptarch but before you decrypt anything be sure to equip your maximum light level gear to be as high as possible. Then decrypt each engram one at a time. Then check it, and if it's higher light level then equip it. Then decrypt your next engram. Rinse and repeat. Doing that got me from 250 to 280 in a few hours of play time.

Also I hear that Blues from other classes can be infused with similar gear (so a hunter can infuse their chest piece with a higher powered warlock chest piece) (I haven't checked this yet myself, since I'm just playing on Warlock right now.) Thus you should really try to keep all or most of your discarded gear in order to increase your light level on your alts more quickly.

Yup. Just make sure you download 2.0 already. If not you'll be waiting a while...

Ive already gotten all the updates automatically I believe, so I should be set to go. I already see some of the usual suspects so i figure Destiny Gaf is still quite active.

Yes. Story-wise you get cutscenes, more dialogue, your Ghost can scan objects for extra lore-stuff, etc. You now have tons of 'Quests' containing multiple steps with all kinds of objectives. They also 'Questified' the old content so it makes more sense story wis (for example, the Sword of Crota mission now belongs in the The Dark Below questline). There are more mechanics regarding new relics or how you can damage certain higher-level enemies. The new strikes are pretty great, and some of them have dynamic elements. Gameplaywise it's still pretty much a 'mainstream shooter', but TTK definitely embraced the RPG/Story side more (but don't except it to be Mass Effect-level changes or something)

Just FYI, this question has been asked almost literally every page in the thread. A lot of folks are curious like you are - go back and look for other impressions, but my general comment is that they've done some fairly impressive triage to make the existing story missions feel more interwoven: it's mostly by rearranging the order of some missions, adding a good bit of flavor text and vendor conversations, and providing players with a quest log system that lets you know why you are actually shooting those dudes.

That said, the original missions are 100 percent unchanged, so if lack of mission variety was a thing, that hasn't changed for original, TDB or HoW missions. The new TTK story missions, though, have changed quite a bit As far as pacing, flow and feel. And they've also added a lot of nonlinearity in terms of how you pursue quests and go on missions. Even in the reworked old campaign, you can intersperse Dark Below missions with campaign, etc.

If you still own the original, the 2.0 quest update and revamped campaign is free to download, so you can try it yourself and go from there. I'm loving it!

Eh, I'll give it a shot. New quest dialogue and context means a lot to me.

Easily fits that crowd. Game feels fun in ways that it didn't before, and its not simply just having new things to do.

Though its the endgame where its at and we'll see whats the what.

I just hit 75 legendary marks. Should I dump them straight into a piece of Vanguard gear or is there something more efficient to buy or save for either now or down the line?

Is the Vex a viable PvP weapon again after the 2.0 update?

From my experience, yes. I don't have one but I've been killed by it plenty.

I don't know what it is with hand cannons now, but I can't seem to get used to them. I've been trying to get a decent low-mid RoF Legendary Scout Rifle as a replacement, but I can't seem to find any.

Try the Dead Orbit scout rifle Hung Jury SR4. Or, if you can find one, the Omolon HC Kumakatok. I'm loving the SR4. It sounds and handles far superior to any year 1 scout rifle to the point that I am not missing my hand cannons (although the Kumakatok is great!)

I snagged the Vanguard Ghost since that seems to be the item that drops least. It has Wormspore detector as well, and is 280 light.

Good stuff, Deku! Most of us run up to the Cryptarch and spam X, so this is good advice.

Need to be Raid ready by tomorrow! Ahhhh

The one thing that sucks coming in to the game from vanilla (no DLC) is that I'm completely overpowered for all the DLC missions and have to wait till I get to at least 240 light until I can modify them. But it's not like there aren't a shit load of other stuff to do.

It's genuinely surprising what a few popup boxes does for context and setup. I restarted a Titan from scratch to see what it was like and it works really well. Having Zavala (the titan Vanguard) greet you and then say "hey, There's a lot of Fallen chatter where we picked you up. We'd like you to go back and check it out, plus this will give you the chance to search for that engine you need to hit up the Moon."

Plus the quest system helps you keep eyes on why you're Going to the moon, what Eris wants, etc.

What I think would have really helped, though, is some kind of introductory cut scene for your job-specific Vanguard. Giving some setup for who they are and what they're like. The TTK campaign is really great with this: Radio chatter goes a long way with me.

I'll keep those in mind. I pledged New Monarchy, so I'll have to wait a little bit for the DO scout. The other problem I have is that my Ghost is only 186, so I need to play the dailies and get more marks to buy the Vanguard or the Crucible ghost.

Just got a better legendary arms from a blue engram. :O

Light 282 now. =D

Do we know what the light req will be for the Raid? I want to say 280 min?

I guess it is a little annoying that my current item progression seems to be just swapping back and forth between the two varieties of blue hunter armor as it very slowly increases in armor level.

I swapped out 4 pieces of legendary armor for blues that had higher light stats, last night. The loot game has changed.

I didn't think it was possible... but Bungie have pulled an ARR/RoS for sure.
DGAF, I'll see you in the tower.

I'm starting to feel like using Legendary Marks toward Vanguard Armor and Weapons is pointless. I'm still getting rare and new legendary drops that go past 280.

The only vanguard gear that is worth buying is the ghost. Ghosts don't really drop in the wild much. I'd avoid buying gear though, as once you start doing the weekly heroic strikes you will be getting a ton of really good gear.

I just got storm caller subclass and that shit is dope great way to spend my lunch. Now I want to leave work so I can play some more. It was throwing me off that I was getting so many green items I was forgetting that they were stronger than the items I had already got before TTK came out.

Came to post this as well. What a sweet scout rifle.

Is the PS4 content significant enough to warrant the purchase over the xbox one version? Never played the game and more friends on xbox one

The game is way more enjoyable with friends so if you have friends who have it/will have it on Xbox then go Xbox. The amount of new PS exclusive stuff is fairly minimal, one strike and some gear if I remember correctly.

Yeah, I saw that guy, too. I've been getting quite a few blues and greens, but they always seem to be weapons or gloves. I'm gonna do some Crucible grinding tonight, and I've been getting some decent rewards through that.

Wait until tomorrow to see what Xur is selling, you don't want to buy a legendary if Xur sells the exotic item in the same slot.

It actually did the same thing originally and TTK is better. The missions are largely the same, but they have added additional context via the Ghost and talking to NPCs so the story actually makes some sort of sense now.

I actually started replaying the original story because I had it as a questline and didn't realize that's what I was doing until i saw the cutscene.

In a sense they didn't do a lot to the old quests, but what they did fills in the gaps in a way that makes it much improved and more cohesive.

Wait.

So the Legendary Marks reward from the Daily Crucible match is port account and not per player?

I did it on my hunter and when I went to do it with me Titan it was already filled.

Can anyone confirm?
