Destiny - What do you think the next 6 months will look like?

To start us off, let's remind ourselves of this:

My personal observations/thoughts:

House of Wolves DLC is now late, no release date announced yet as of last Weekly Update by Bungie:

April 2: https://www.bungie.net/7_Bungie-Weekly-Update--04022015/en/News/News?aid=12738

The next expansion for Destiny is something we’re really looking forward to talking about. This month, there will come a day when we’ll reveal a release date for the trials that await you, with a whole reef of details soon to follow – but it is not this day.

This is bad for people playing right now, I sense there has been a major fall-off of players within the last few weeks. This being the addicted crowd who have been playing non-stop since day 1... the content has finally completely dried up for them. While the majority of players (who I suspect I fall into), quit playing several months ago (around January perhaps).

But it may be a bit good for the game overall... because March - September was a LONG gap without new content... and the game would most certainly die completely in that time. Pushing out HoW DLC will close that gap a bit. And with the added time, I'm hoping that HoW will be a more significant piece of content than The Dark Below was... for me, it would certainly need to be. I'm sure they are trying to find a way to keep players playing between HoW release and September.

So I assume current Destiny development is going like this?:

C Team - fixes/patches to current content
B Team - HoW DLC
A Team - September release

So hopefully the September release is still on track... but I'm now wondering if that Comet release in September will still be what was originally planned? Something like 12 new story missions, 3-4 new Strikes, and 1 new Raid.

Could they be aiming higher?

Could they be scrapping it and working on Destiny 2 with completely new systems?

Raises another question... Will Destiny 2 only work (for you/community) if you can carry over your characters and Gear from Destiny 1? Or will people accept an entire new game where they must start from scratch?

If I'm correct, we know very little / nothing about any of this. If there is more known than this, I'm hoping to learn so here.

How is the current GAF community? Still going strong? More newer players than day 1 players?

Delicious disappointment. Looking forward to it with my DGAF raid pals.

Edit: and point of clarification: HoW can't be late, because I'm pretty sure they never said a release date. Only "Q2 2015".

Edit 2, to actually answer questions asked in the body of the message, not just the title:

I'm not saying you didn't observe an drop off in January, but there was a huge spike for the hard mode Crota's End around then, at least in DGAF. And I think they posted something about how many people played the HM raid that week or weekend or something.

DGAF stayed very active until the last 2-3 weeks, when it fell off a fucking cliff, right around BloodBorne's release. Anecdotally, I'm starting to see people trickle back in, now that BloodBorne isn't as new and shiny: the Destiny in-game friend list went onto the second page of people playing the game for the first time in a few weeks, and posting in the OT has picked up a bit.

I don't think they'll scrap Comet and go for Destiny 2. That would create an even bigger gap in content for them to hemorrhage players, because they wouldn't be able/willing to rush it out. I think Destiny (plus the first two expansions) is being neglected because resources have moved on to Comet. I think/hope we'll see some really significant improvements with Comet, be it "quality of life" stuff (like the way we move items around between characters, load times, etc.), if not care/attention to content and/or breadth of content. CE was clearly rushed, and I think bungie realizes the mistake, that's why HoW is "delayed" (smaller team needing more time to deliver something better/more thought out than CE), and why Comet should be decent. I'm really pulling for VoG-quality content in Comet.

being the addicted crowd who have been playing non-stop since day 1... the content has finally completely dried up for them

This is me and my friends. We stopped playing mostly a month or so ago because there's just not that much to do anymore. Hit 32 with one character, close with another two. We still raid now and then but nothing like we used to do.

Looking forward to HoW coming out and hope it's a lot more significant than TDB. Also hope the raid is a lot better. Then the big expansion could really be something.

I stopped playing around december but I was thinking I would drop back in around the "comet" release later this year.

Hows the community of the game now? Is it still very populated? I gave up around October last year. I tried to get back in but the insanity of re-upgrading my exotics with exotic shards made sure I stayed out.

Oh wow, house of Wolves came out....is it any good?

I have the pass to get it but haven't played this game in forever.

Edit: Looked for reviews guess that timeline is off, hasn't come out yet.

I dont mind the gap really. I was sucked into Destiny until maybe a month ago.
I didnt play anything else and the gap now to HoW created a break for me haha. To play some other games. I for sure gonna go back when it releases. Them Raids with friends. Its something special.
Same for the big content update at the end of the year.

It'll certainly bring people back just to try out the new content, but Bungie has got to realize that, at this point, 6 months with little to no new content is finally getting on players' nerves. I mentioned in the DGAF forum that I've reached saturation point with Destiny. I'll certainly stick around for HoW, but I have a backlog that's worth investing time in instead of grinding the same raids and strikes over and over.

Bungie needs to rethink their design philosophy going forward. They need to invest time into making strikes, raids, and story missions more memorable, more choice-driven, and just more fun to play. CE sucks, Omnigul sucks, and the gear is so raid-oriented that it has no use outside of leveling you to Light 32. After that, all legendary gear is simply copy + paste with a different coat of paint. Engrams aren't exciting anymore, raids are a weekly duty instead of an investment of my time, and I still don't know what the story is about.

I'll still continue to play and enjoy my time every now and then, but dammit if Destiny doesn't need some major overhauls.

I really am curious as to the size of the player-base now. OP, you said there has been a major drop-off, how do we know? Based on the OT? General consensus around the internet?

Either way, I don't expect Destiny to retain a large audience (if it still even has one) despite the DLC and its quality, not with so many games coming this year, especially big shooters that will be directly competing for the same market. We have CoD of course, but also Battlefront and Halo this year. Those games will definitely be taking away some of Destiny's pie.

I quitted playing the game when Dark Below was released. I might jump back in if I can get all the five DLCs for the price of the season pass.

Pretty much. Some will come back for House of Wolves, but if the content gap between that and the next expansion is super long expect a barren wasteland in that time.

With no subscription maybe they actually prefer people to just play for a bit, stop for a while, and then start again when new content drops. I know I'll be checking into House of Wolves since it's already bought and paid for, even though I barely feel like even looking at Destiny right now.

I know a ton of people that play refularly, but most of them are slowing down until HoW releases.

I think HoW will be more substantial than originally planned, and should make for some awesome content.

Hoping Comet is absolutely huge. With 500 people on the team, at least some of them should be able to put together a sizable expansion with Comet.

I'm expecting subclasses, maybe a new Moon/Playspace, tons of weapons, story mission, and maybe some sort of feature addition like ship combat or housing or something.

I still play Crucible with some friends but we're starting to get bored of the campaign content. Everyone's ready for something new.

If the game had strikes that were generated like Diablo 3 rifts that would be cool as hell.

I would never expect it to happen though.

I would basically want an adventure mode like Diablo 3, and rifts like diablo 3

basically an endless mode with increasing rewards. Don't make it a chore to get exotics, you already paid for the damn game.

I absolutely love what they tried to do with Destiny. The game just needed more of everything it has and it would have been the GOAT.

I hope House of Wolfs turns out good, but I expect it to be crap in the vain of the first expansion.

I think Comet has the chance of becoming a good expansion though, as it should be bigger in scope I think we can expect radical new content (and no rehashes or little extentions to the old levels) and hopefully, if they take criticism at heart, finally a good story with interesting missions.

But I fear that, with the leveling system as convoluted as it is at the moment, it will be impossible to get into for people who didn't want to jump in the grindfest that the endgame content was (like me). First expansion was nigh on unplayable at a certain moment for characters in the lower 20ies, and I fear the same for Comet tbh (unless there is a levelcap raise and scaling system of some sorts.

Unless I'm intirely mistaken about this all, I'll probably won't play Destiny anymore.

Cross your fingers for some procedurally generated "unlimited dungeon".

That would be awesome, especially if applied to raids. I wonder how difficult something like that would be to achieve.

I wish they had better spaced out the DLC. Haven't touched it in months, although I suppose that could be a good thing.

I really have to wonder how many people are still playing this game. Maybe they would be better off just moving on to Destiny 2 full steam ahead instead of creating a massive expansion for a shrinking audience. I doubt I'll buy any further expansions to the game (stopped playing around the New Year) but I will definitely buy a (new and improved) Destiny 2.

People still play Destiny? What do you do?
Don't be obtuse. It has taken the hardcore players several months to fully level all three classes and collect and level every exotic in the game. Now is the time when most of us have accomplished all of that and are now getting burned out and waiting for new content.

I think it was interesting too. The game probably should have been in the oven for another year or so and it would be have been significantly better.

I'd like to think they' revised their vision for the HoW expansion in light of the really poor feedback they got from players and reviewers for The Dark Below. I'm hoping they have as lot more content, and less recycled missions this time around.

Hope they are taking the extra time to make House of Wolves better then the piss poor first DLC.

Horde mode, matchmaking for everything, more then 3 story missions set in areas already in the base game etc.... Whatever it is, its going to be hard to make something worse then the first DLC.

Maybe House of Wolves is out in May and they do a basic "and watch Sonys E3 for more info on the future of Destiny" in the release trailer at the end and then they announce whatever Comet is.

I took a 2 and a half week break from Destiny after playing every single day from release day and now I'm having a really hard time to get back to the game. I hope that HoW is more than enough reason to get back to the game again.

I enjoyed Destiny, really needed a lot more content plus the grind needs to be taken down a few notches. No one should you need more than one character to gain the tiered equipment you require to progress. Seems so stupid having to repeat a mission 3 times, with 3 characters just to get the currency to get one unlock during the week rather than it taking 3.

As for the DLC, I'm guessing the next pack will be out in June? Then at E3 they will be showing the larger expansion pack that will be due out the end of the year with a larger features set than the current "expansions".

Given that Raids are by far the most interesting feature of the game, it desperately needs more of them with the complexity of Vault of Glass if not more intricate. Crota's end is good but given that it can be solo'd from begining to end, it lacked the level of complexity and cooperative actions that the VoG needed to complete.

I did that by the end of november. Never bothered with the Hive extension because :
- amazingly over priced for such small revelant content (PVP maps, don't care, two very poor strikes : no even new bosses, just reskins, poor missions, few and poor new exo,and a descent raid. No way I pay money for the raid.
- terrible upgrade system for the weapons : took a hard shit on dedicated player, and made newbie got better toys for less and the new armor at the shop made irrevalent all the hard VoG runs.
- Bungie still not fixing any bugs. They just and ONLY fixed heavy ammo and made a terrible vault space extension a couple of weeks ago.

No sorry destiny was great fun but Bungie is really taking fans for stupids people with how they handle destiny patch and content. They really are too slow, too out of touch with the community and they talk a lot during weekly updates to say nothing and do even less.

it will take a MIRACLE for House of Wolves to raise the bar and I'm not even sure I could go back even if Comet and whatknot are rocking amazing content

Is there any hint for HoW?

I stopped playing in Feb but I may return once HoW is released (but probably only due to the fact I got it with the game).

Also yeah they should stop packing in PVP maps into the damn expansions. I literally don't care about PVP, I'm sure alot of people don't care for it. And having 2-3 maps every goddamn expansion is such a waste.

Each week I find whichever friend is bored enough to load up destiny in order to run the Nightfall strike in hopes of getting an exotic like Hawkmoon. It inevitably ends with us being disappointed when we quit after 1 wipe or when we complete it and are rewarded with useless purples/shards.

I have two level 31's and that is the extent of my Destiny playtime each week (45-60 mins max).

Datamining has shown HoW is likely to drop mid-May (I think it's the 19th). That would mean a 5 month gap between expansions so I would bet another 5 months or so putting Comet at late September or October release.

Honestly, I'm ok with it. Once I get all the new exotics from the respective expansion and do what there is to do enough, I play something else. Right now, I'm largely on a Destiny hiatus and finally playing other stuff and it's great. When HoW drops, I'll jump back in full force. It would definitely be nice if they could drop some more events (like how Queen's Wrath was supposed to be) in between expansions though. Iron Banner is cool and all, but it's kind of lost it's novelty coming every month and it would be cool to get more PvE content.

I played pretty much non stop from launch till January, with a break before Crota came out. All i did wad get on Tuesday bights and raid, have everything but Nechrochasm.

Ill check out HoW purely because ive already paid for it and my friends will want to raid.

Itll take some serious overhauls to convince me to buy Destiny 2 after i bought the ghost edition :,(

Oh god if it drops May 19th ill be ploughing through The Witcher 3, not trying to clear the raid before I have to get up.

I per-ordered both DLC but just got turned off when they did the big patch before The Dark Below and left the game. the whole re-upgrade your cool guns thing was really frustrating to me and I feel the social interface, match making, along side with the raid system just isn't really something I like. did they change/improve any of that? especially the social interface. it's pretty annoying to me that the hub city serves no purpose at all other then go to get quest and upgrade stuff.

Raises another question... Will Destiny 2 only work (for you/community) if you can carry over your characters and Gear from Destiny 1? Or will people accept an entire new game where they must start from scratch?
Hahahaha that'd be nuts. People would riot. As many infuriating decisions as Bungie has made, I can't imagine them doing something that insane.

There are a few smart things they could do to keep people playing between House of Wolves and Comet -- for example, they could add monthly heroic raids that offer new rewards you can't find anywhere else in the game. Or they could add more weekly events like Queen's Wrath from a few months ago. But it's hard for them to offer much in the way of rewards because equipment slots are so limited.

I stopped playing in November and got back into it around a month ago. I'll probably get bored a bit after HoW is out and take a break until Comet. I predict a lot of other people doing the same.
