It's not always just about the numbers. When the Spurs needed Manu in their wins, he was there. Duncan is not a game sealing player.

Eh, I agree, but I don't think that this difference between them was evident enough during this series to overcome the difference in stats. Manu was great in games 1 and 2, but he didn't need to come up big down the stretch since the games weren't close. He disappeared in games 3 and 4 just like Duncan did. Tonight, in the biggest game, Manu played well in the second half, but Duncan dominated it in several facets of the game.

It's not like Manu was great and clutch every game while Duncan was average and non-clutch every game. If that were the case, I would say that we would perhaps be justified in giving the MVP to Manu-- but it wasn't like that. Not this series.

I'm so fuckin happy

I said in the first NBA thread this season we were gonna take it!

Yea, we didn't go 81-1 but it doesn't matter!!!!!!

I'm seriously about to grab some bricks and hurl them off my third floor balcony onto the road below me. The amount of honking taking place is ridiculous and it's driving my crazy...

"Way to go dad! 6 of em!"

in all honesty, congrats to the Spurs and their fans. Parker's crazily overrated, but Duncan and Ginobli are the truth and with those two (and Pop) they'll contend for years to come. Hopefully we can speed up that rebuilding process and start up another great rivalry with you guys. Even though they are boring at times, winning 3 championships is no small feat. Plus, i'll always love Big Shot Rob so congrats to him on getting another ring.

Yes, ROB! Even though I hate the Lakers, I heard "Big Shot Rob" from my family enough to remember that. Its not Bob or Bobby, DUNCAN!

I'm gonna take a cue from Bill Simmons and refer to him as Big Shot Brob.

:lol

Tim refers to him as Bob or Bobby just to piss him off. But how can you not love Horry, unless you're a Kings fan. :p

The guy always has a smile on his face and just seems so relax out there. But the next minute he is cutting the opponent's throat with his clutch shooting.

Dsal

it's going to come out of you and it's going to taste so good
I would've been happy with either team winning, but congrats to the Spurs on an awesome season and their championship. Duncan is still my favorite player, and even if he gets jittery sometimes it doesn't seem to matter in the end because he's so good.

It looks like I ended up 4th in the GA league on that pick and roll thing on NBA.com... close enough I guess.

And the Feet of Bowen finished 3rd in the Pick 'n Roll. Good enough.

Damn, Tony is not going to have time to think about his awful performance tonight. Lucky son of his mother... :p

Pop: You had me at NBA Finals MVP.

The black man everyone at Activision can agree on
I bow to Tim Duncan, who demanded the ball in the 2nd half.. I have put aside my hate for him.. which really stems from my hate for the Admiral.. I'll never late THAT hate go... great job Tim.

I bow to Ginobli... I already respected the man's game and I'm more than happy to watch him go to town.

Thank Spurs for knocking off Detroit... and congrats.

This...never gets old. Thank you Spurs. You continue to do it the right way, with class, savy, and humility. I could not be more proud as a lifelong fan of this franchise.

Take some well earned time off, and then get to work on number four!!

I've got Pistons over Spurs, FWIW.

Pistons by 6 tonight. So it has been said, so it shall be done.

anyway my main point is that I think Tim has no balls... I've never seen Tim demand anything.. and that's what makes him less than an all-time great for me.

I am picking Detroit for game 7. I just don't see the Spurs being able to handle the pressure. Ginobli can't do it all by himself and I don't see Duncan developing a killer instinct overnight.

San Antionio is going to regret that shit effort they gave in game 6 after they lose tommorrow. They will have all summer to think about it.

And their problems are only going to get worse next year when the Lakers rebound to win another championship. Everyone knows that a good Lakers team owns the Spurs mentally.

... and people think San Antonio is some dynasty in the making? What the ROFL? :lol :lol No team led by Duncan will ever control the league. None. What a bitch. The legacy as a soft player is being written. I have more passion in my ingrown toenail than he does as a basketball player or team leader.

And now... The Truth...

sol5377 said:
I disagree. The Pistons are a GREAT team and the Spurs have brought them to their brink. The Spurs have manhandled the best of the west... and I mean MANHANDLED. The Spurs rarely lose at home and last nights games was a case of the Pistions just playing a little harder and making those few extra shots. I think Game 7 will be a classic as well, but I think the Spurs will pull it out in the end. Duncan is not soft as shit. He's been taking on the Wallace bro's all by himself and holding his own for the most part. Game 7 will show Duncan as the true hall of famer that he is. Just watch...

sol5377 said:
...I'd have to respond by saying that Tim Duncan does have a killer instinct. It's just hard for him to will his way to victory against a great defensive pistions team who has two of the best big men in the league, all while he has to put up with two bum ankles. If I remember correctly, Duncan dominated the Nuggets, then Seattle, then the Suns and he has played well against the Pistons (barring missed free throws). In past years, Duncan has killed the Knicks in the finals, killed the Nets in the finals, killed the Lakers in the semis and has destroyed many other teams. He not only destroys teams directly, he also does it indirectly with his help defense and passes out of double teams to get his teammates open shots. In Game 7, Duncan will further prove why he's the best.

Congrats to the Spurs! They're not my favorite team, but I respect them and Duncan alot for all they've done these last few years.

BTW, my GAF NBA Pick-em Ranking was 1st Place by over 50 points! :D Where's my prize??? ;) My overall NBA.com ranking was 13th out of everyone who picked. Woot!

FLAWLESS VICTOLY!
Congrats to the Spurs! Great TEAM in a great TEAM series. I'm a Pistons fan, but you have to respect the talent SA has on both sides of the court.

Tim Duncan should not be MVP, though!

OMG LIES

He OWNED the 3rd quarter.

He started hitting the bank shots and it forced Detroit to change their D and by time they did, it was too late. No one should question Tim's game after that. He made his free throws in the clutch and played tough D. Not to mention him diving on the floor for that loose ball.

He basically sealed his ticket to the hall of fame.

Feels great that Tim showed up in the game that mattered most, and people can finally stop saying that dumb shit that "Tim never won anything without Dave," when this was only his second year without Dave.

They definitely gave the MVP to the right person. Manu's game was more exciting, but Manu wouldn't look nearly as good as he does without Duncan out there. Duncan had to deal with both Rasheed and Ben, two great, defensive-minded big men.

And this one fact speaks the most to me. In game 6, it was mostly guard play with Tim taking only around 14 shots. The Spurs lost that game. Game 7, the Spurs made SURE to get Tim reinvolved and make him the emphasis of the offense and they performed much better. The fact that Tim put up the numbers he did against constant Piston double teams and interior roughhousing speaks of his immeasurable value to this team.

Kobe usually was the closer on those Lakers teams, but did he ever win the Finals MVP? Nope. Shaq did because Shaq is the foundation. Tim was and continues to be the foundation of this Spurs team.

Tim is the base of the cake and Manu is the icing. While Manu is definitely more exciting, without Tim, there would be nothing to celebrate.

Horry doesn't hit the 3 in Game Five, Pistons win. HORRY FOR MVFP.

Horry has earned 7 championship rings. He saved Houston for both of its rings. He was instrumental in all of LA's rings, from that killer three against philly to the miracle in Sacremento. He earned his first ring for San Antonio two years ago and got San An another one this year.

Someone needs to start an offseason NBA thread so I can start making crazy predictions about the Lakers. I will get a head start by guaranteeing a 5 seed. Accepting ANY AND ALL AVATAR BETS.

Bring it Laker haters!

Quoted, Bolded, Italicized (again), and Underlined for absolute truth.

I promise you this, I'll be buying an Horry jersey if I can ever find one and will be wearing it proudly.

The best part of all of this is that someone is going to leave Horry all alone to be the hero again in the playoffs next year. People never learn. :lol

I love how people say stuff like "If horry doesn't hit the three, the Pistons close it out in 6".

As if Horry was just a last minute replacement and he wasn't really a Spurs player. Thank God he will probably stay for a couple more years.

You could say the same thing about Kerr, Paxson, Kobe, Jordan, Reggie Miller, Derek Fisher, etc.

The fact of the matter is Horry DID hit that three, he ALWAYS hits that three (except against the Spurs two years ago), and he always changes series.

Still, I don't think anyone is dumb enough to take anything from the Spurs, they are just saying that was the difference in the series. But that is usually the difference between winning and losing in a close series, and there is no one better to have on your team for a big time shot.

That's the point. Horry is there to provide that much needed clutch shooting and experience, but people talk as if the Spurs were lucky Rob rised from the grave and hit that shot, like he wasn't even supposed to be there and have the opportunity to do something he has done so many times before.

no he didn't. he was on the lakers at that time. remember, his game winning shot in san antonio rimmed out, and the spurs closed out the lakers in los angeles in game 6. man that was god damn sweet!

but to conclude, horry has 6 rings now.

"I love how people say stuff like "If horry doesn't hit the three, the Pistons close it out in 6"."

Well....it was the winning margin of Game 5, what other chance do you think they had that game.

He might not be a "Superstar" but he does the little things right. Was even a factor in Game 7, though not with scoring.

Dude I think you need to read what I said again. :lol

P.S. I know he was on the Lakers at the time and the statement was meant to reflect that.

Heh...

Though I don't think you can call the Pistons a One Hit Wonder. They had a pretty rough season yet they still managed to come back to the NBA Finals and push a game 7. The Spurs didn't make it to the finals after winning in '99 and '03.

If the Pistons boost up their bench in the off-season, they'll still be a force to be reckoned with next year. I hate to say it, but I wouldn't be surprised if next year we see a repeat of this year's Finals...

The Pistons are an excellent team. It'd be a crime to call them a one hit wonder. With the Spurs' core locked through 2010 and the Pistons' through 2007 or something like that, you can expect both to be in the thick of things again next season.

And the Spurs will probably have Luis Scola next season. Can't wai!

One question though. Why do people say Detroit has had such a rough season? Because of the fight? Pffft, Ben got 5 games and that was it. Because of LB? I guess, but he was still there when it mattered the most.

Now the Pacers, that team had a tough season. A season so difficult that I think Carlisle deserved CotY for keeping the team afloat and making them competitive in the playoffs.

It sounds strange to say it, but I missed the annual Spurs/Lakers second round matchup. Along with the start of baseball season and E3, it was one of my rites of spring. With Phil back on board, the Lakers should have a decent shot of making the playoffs if nothing else.

Funny seeing some of those posts that sol quoted...hope that crow didn't stick between your teeth guys. :lol

And who really deserved the finals MVP anyway? Probably Billiups from games 1-6, and he didn't do shit on Thursday. Might as well give it to the guy who's got two already, just to put his name into the record books. :lol

That was his point. :lol

Horry was like 1 for 23 behind the arc in that playoff stretch, which was totally uncharateristic for him. And he still almost saved the day for the Fakers. Nevermind game 5 last year (Spurs deserved to lose that one anyway)...that would've been BY FAR the worst Spurs loss ever. They might've never recovered.
