Did Rare's departure hurt Nintendo?

I really want a KI3 but I just KNOW that if or when they do make it they're going to go full on 3D with it, and personally I DESPISE 3D fighters, cept the soul series only one I can get into for some reason but even that not so much. Seriously when they finally make a KI3 (cause they keep hinting about it) if they make it full on 3D and dont do high res pre-rendered sprites, Rare will for ever be dead to me. DEAD TO ME!!!!!

You may as well start carving that headstone. The chance of KI3 having 2d pre-rendered sprites is about 0%

it hasn't hurt nintendo yet. it remains to be seen if it will in the future. If Rare doesn't produce a hit in the next 2 years than it's all over, sell your 350 million dollar investment.

I was a big fan of past RARE games, goldeneye was my reason to choose n64. If it wasnt for that game i would have never got into mario 64, zelda, starfox etc and turned into a big nintendo fan. It was my first nintendo console.

Conkers bad fur day was one of the best games last gen IMO. I got an xbox around the RARE move to xbox announcement, but not soley for RARE games, Halo and Panzor Dragoon tempted me as did the awesome mod enabled features.

But I didnt buy GBTG , Kameo looks uninteresting and Conker is a remake. The future outlook for Rare is all down to Perfect Dark Zero IMO, its time for them to prove themselves again. Time will tell.

Im glad nintendo have DK back tho, jungle beat looks so good.

To answer your question it depends on who you ask, majority of GC gamers will say no. The majority of Xbox gamers will say yes or in the long run.

GC gamers see Rare as dev house going down hill, Xbox gamers(some) believe that the group can and will make stellar AAA titles again.

Obviously no one knows, Rare don't know themselves. So bias, rules most comments and theories put forth. No one know the whole story behind the departure, we'll probably never know.

Every comment, should be taken with a grain of salt. There's not enough knowledge on the matter to give an accurate answer.

I said something earlier but now that this topic has added more meat let me add more seasoning.

RARE so far has released Grabbed by the Ghoulies and will release Conker's game, thats to RARE games. Give RARE a chance as they are getting into gears into XBox.

RARE and Fur-Shading, last time I checked Fur-Shading was a hardware requirement of DirectX 8.0 that explains why Nvidia's GeForce 3Ti, GeForce 4Ti can do Fur-Shading in hardware and why ATI's R200 GPU aka Radeon 8500 can also do Fur-Shading in hardware and there have been demos in developer and hobbyist sites that feature DirectX 8.0, 8.1 fur-shading. RARE was probably going to do Fur-Shading in software, a very time consuming effort, but that is what RARE does best, spend alot of time getting the games right.

On a side note ATI's R300 based Radeon 9700, a DirectX 9.0 graphics card was released with an awesome 3d demo with a 3d Bear that demonstrated Fur-Shading while at the same time being in a forest scene. If you know that then if XBox 2 is using ATI's R500 GPUs Fur-Shading is a cake walk.

Halo, I believe I remember seeing alot of hype for Halo way back in 1998 and 1999. Specially in 1999 because aside from PC magazines one of my Gamer's Republic back issues from 1999 had under, under development games for SEGA Dreamcast a console version of Halo that would have been released probably by late 2000, early 2001 but it was confirmed back then that Bungie would make a Dreamcast version.

On that note I think it was a 1998 issue of Gamer's Republic or GameFan there was a under possible development for Dreamcast Star Wars Jedi Knight: Dark Forces II.

Could you have imagined if there would have been a console version of Star Wars Jedi Knight: Dark Forces II for SEGA Dreamcast? (crickets in the background sounds)

Perfect Dark, it does not matter if Perfect Dark is a first person shooter, there was a sea of FPSs back when GoldenEye for N64 was released and it stood out from the pack, there was an even bigger ocean of FPSs when Perfect Dark for N64 was released and it stood out as well, of course we all know that same is true for Halo Combat Evolved since the REAL hype was generated when the game playing public aka Joe public discovered the joys of being able to put the XBox in a backpack and go to Halo CE Lan party making PC gamers furious because they did not have the graphics in their PCs like consoles gamers had in 2001 and 2002.

Bottom line is if RARE develops Perfect Dark Zero or whatever for XBox it will stand out of the pack and take its place among Halo CE, Halo 2, GoldenEye and Perfect Dark as legendary console FPSs that are just legendary games. New gamers will buy the game, the hardcore will line up and buy the game, generating hype that the casual gamers will pick up on and another million seller is out from RARE.

Killer Instinct 3 or 4: Lets see I feel that KI 2 does not count because that game was made by Midway as a cash in game, not RARE (not to mention Midway probably purposely screwed up the first game's gameplay so as to kill KIs hype as a threat to their fighting games) With that out of the way, I count the Killer Instinct series for Arcade, SNES and N64 with KI Gold basically a better KI 2.

Now if you know about graphics cards and GPUs, and you really look at the first Killer Instinct Arcade game's pre-rendered graphics, you know that to trully replicate and improve on those graphics in full 3d you need full enviroment bump mapping, full Fur-shading, full lighting effects with independent colored lights, etc blah blah blah you could try and do that with the XBox's very capable Nv2X Dx8.0 GPU that can do all of this in hardware or you could better just wait and have RARE do it on XBox 2's possible R500 Dx10? GPU core for a grander effect specially considering the time it would take for RARE to develop KI 3 or 4 and do justice on XBox.
