Digital Foundry Direct: Weekly #190: PSSR Problems but... Silent Hill 2 Pro Fixed? AC Syndicate 60FPS Tested!

Or is it just one of Phil's balls in my throat?

PSSR on PS5 Pro: The Good, The Bad and The Ugly - what's actually going on? Rich, Oliver and Alex discuss, before moving on to a look at Silent Hill 2's latest Pro update... which removes PSSR in its performance mode. Rich has some interesting findings from Assassin's Creed Syndicate's new 60 frames per second upgrade, along with a look at the latest iteration of PlayStation Portal - including direct cloud streaming support. And Oliver has some favourable impressions from the unexpected but rather cool Pro upgrade for The Callisto Protocol.

AC Syndicate mini analysis

- PS5/PS5 Pro/SX comparison
- OG PS5 is the least performant of the 3, drops most frames in cut-scenes. PS5 Pro and SX trade blows, in some scenes PS5 Pro is faster, in some SX runs faster.
- In the prologue chapter game play, PS5 drops the most frames then PS5 Pro and SX being the smoothest
- Series S is 'very similar' to SX, and has slightly less drops in cut-scenes compared to SX
- But it also runs a lower resolution and aliasing is visible
- They only counted PS5's pixels, looks native 4K but IQ looks soft

lol this makes no sense. Xsx vs ps5 is in line with the gpu delta but ps5 pro should be outperforming the xsx by at least 10-20% .

It's native app on Xbox and just PS4 version on PS5?

I tested Origins and Odyssey on both consoles (when I still had SX) and it was nigh and day difference, PS5 versions were just PS4 Pro ones (with lower resolution etc.) with fps unlock and looked much worse.

It shows Gen9aware on Series X, so it's not a native app.

But the game originally never got One X upgrades, so this is the first time it's running at 4K and 60 on Xbox. The PS5 version might be the PS4 Pro version running at higher DRS, hence people saying it looks softer, it used a ho-hum version of checkerboard rendering on the PS4 Pro.

Q: Did the update fix Portal stutter and improve bitrate?

Richard: "Yeah well, the update added Cloud streaming. It's in beta and needs improvement. xCloud yadayda.. but yeah... so... the question... well... yeah... improved bitrate? Can't tell... uhhh... stutter... this is subjective... plenty people say it doesn't... all these games, I only checked Control, in this room there's a bit of stutter, it's also present in PS+ Cloud streaming, so... uhhh yeah... Cloud streaming.."

Might as well not address the question if you only check Control and find an issue also present in Cloud streaming.

Weird take, if you don't actually check it out.

Nah fuck that give us a Unity Remastered with Real Time Global Illumination.
Give us the original vision Ubi had before they found out what CPU/GPUs were in the XB1/PS4.

Both PlayStation is running at higher res. Evident at 1:00. Look at the texture on the hat. It appears the pro just running the ps5 version with just higher frame rate.

That's just an odd texture difference, the resolution otherwise seems about the same.

But other places show the difference other way. You can see an example of that in this, note the back of Evie's jacket (especially the left shoulder) looks blurrier / soupier on PS5 Pro's side and also the building facade and the window area looks more aliased, while it's smoother on the SX side.

Some users in the AC Syndicate patch topic who have both versions have said the SX version looks sharper to them as well.

I bought it and it's certainly higher resolution on Xbox, and auto HDR is a nice bonus.

Whenever anyone tries to downplay certain guys at DFs bias all you need to do is look to this video.

Show some examples from this video.

Is Alex being a meanie about the pro again?

They are mostly talking about why PSSR is having issues. Very reasonable stuff, they also said that BO6 looks worse with PSSR compared to their standard reconstruction.

But I guess some people will always hate them and see their "bias"

he literally shows it stuttering in remote play in this very video...
And as I pointed out, he only checked one single game (Control) and the stutter is present in Cloud streaming as well, so most likely it's an issue with the game itself.

I've tested Blops6, GT7, HFW, HZD, Kena, R&C, Throne and Liberty, ESO, Overwatch 2, Fall Guys, Pinball FX, Hunt: Showdown, FFVII Rebirth and The First Descendant (off the top of my head) and none displayed stutter (at least not noticeable). IQ also drastically improved.

So yeah, DF very much dodged the question.

What the hell is going with these guys lately? two hours? I dont have time for that

the podcast is now also basically a way to show short tests of less interesting games or patches that can't get their own video.

for example the Assassin's Creed patch, or small updates to previously tested ones like SH2.

this will balloon the podcast length

Dodging the question about Portal having fixed the stutter is sticking out.

huh? did you watch the entire segment? He does answer it. Most of it is talking about the Cloud streaming since that's the big new update. Understandable that's what they talk about more.

All that is way beyond the scope of answering one patreon question, it will be covered if they do a full video on it (which it sounds like they will since Rich says Tom is testing it).

DF Direct's are basically podcasts, treat them like any other weekly gaming podcast that usually runs the same length.

But would like to see pro vs xsx comparison as xbox has big advantage over base ps5 in this game ;)
It's generally around 20fps above Series X (and base PS5) in non-CPU constrained games.

RE4R fully updated on both is 45fps average in the village in RT/Res/Hair Strands on Series X and 79fps on Pro at same settings while being higher resolution as well.

It's not even a matter of backwards mode, as RE2R in RT Mode is basically locked 60fps on Pro and barely touching 50fps on base PS5 and Series X.

Whatever's going on here, is odd to say the least.

It is the resolution. See my post above.
They did not test that on the seriesx. Why though lol? To make the comparison get more talking perhaps.
Not sure if it's resolution, but unless it's different in motion, as I haven't watched the video, something seems up here as well.

rule number 1 on the internet.
anyone who gives subjective testimony can be discarded immediately until empirical evidence is shown

we live in a world where people clamed Jedi Survivor runs perfectly on their PC, or that they don't have shader stutters in Elden Ring.

remote play is simply the console sending its frame buffer over the network to a client device. it doesn't matter which game you test, the results should be nearly identical.

the only difference you could get is if a game has particularly high frequency detail that blows out the bitrate of the video stream. which I don't think is a scenario that Control should run into while standing still and simply moving the camera.

I watched that section, he didn't really answer and only pointed to one game Control and only talked about one room and called stutter improvements subjective.

Yeah well, I posted offscreen footage of GT7 running on my Portal. It's running smoothly with close to no hiccups:
