[Digital Foundry] Final Fantasy 16 - PlayStation 5 - Tech Review

nani17

are in a big trouble
Final Fantasy 16 is a beautifully crafted, visually stunning series entry that arrives with gamers in a polished, bug-free state.

We've all witness a miracle fam. Can't remember the last time we got one of these.

For a GOTY contest, this should matter more than it currently does.

I completed horizon dlc few days ago, i can't believe how good it looks (and runs) compare to any other AAA games on consoles.

Guerilla i in a league of its own since PS4. Even naughty dog is behind. Only insomniac is very close.

As for FFXVI, quality is not playable to me so performance is the way to go even with low res.
But GG's game design is dated and the first two hours of FF16 take a big dump on HFW.

I am sure if FF16 devs tried they could get a fancy looking game running on a PS5 but you would lose the epic battles and god knows what else they have planned. HFW's flying speeds just exposes how simple and dated that game really is. Their big setpiece only on PS5 boss battle in DLC was so basic, we had platinum doing better setpieces on the PS3.

The only thing mental here is the spin you are trying to give it. :messenger_tears_of_joy:
Be honest, like seriously honest. If I said to you after Mark Cernys Road to ps5 that final fantasy xvi will be an exclusive to ps5 it will launch at 1080p 30fps and 720p 60 fps and would struggle to hit 60fps, would drop as low as 35 fps and hover there In gameplay scenes at 720p....

You would have ripped the piss out of me, so would 90 percent of users on here and I'd probably have been banned for spreading "fud"

Just sit and think about it. You know it to be true.

That's all just bullshit, everyone who played the demo had a blast with the game. Differences in internal resolution that people can't notice without zooming it to 200x are meaningless.
Play the game, have fun, chill.

Just keep in mind these resolutions for when the game hits the PC. We're talking about 1080p-1440p/30fps. So don't be surprised if the game stresses even an RTX4090 at native 4K to get 60fps.

It's really not though.

But yes, I agree. Once you are playing it and enjoying it. I personally would take 720p with a locked 60fps if that's what it would take...but man....halo used to get shit for being 720p on xbox one at locked 60fps with DRS.

I'm all for pushing tech and resolution should be the first to be tweaked on the fly but not hitting your intended performance metric and having wildly fluctuating framerate is a no go...edit...outside the VRR window!

It's almost like a tech demo at that point.

And FSR 1.0 Is awful...they need to sort that out.

At these resolutions your talking native 1440p at 60fps would be an achievement for PC. And I'd take that...probably between 60 and 90fps with a 4090 at a guess.

So, John has a great big OLED. is he saying my eyes and brain will just get used to the 30fps even on OLED becuase I do trust him.

I'm supposed to pick up my copy tomorrow morning and maybe I just play it at 30. Its that or wait for PC...but man that might be a year.

I have been playing 30 fps games on that same oled tv for the last 3 years. Spider-Man miles, ratchet, Horizon fw, guardians of the galaxy. You get used to it in ten minutes max. Just don’t switch back and forth.

Someone cut me straight, does this game look next gen or not?

Thinking about picking it up, so much conflicting info out there on the visuals.

If it's a "good" 30fps game, it should be fine. If it is shit and feels horrible to play (if you've tried Witcher 3 on consoles in the 30fps mode, this kind of shit) then yeah it won't be.
I didn't try the demo so I am going in blind, I assume this is the good kind.

Well, I guess tomorrow is the first day of me getting used to 30fps games on my OLEDs.

Its very likely this game has some serious CPU issues, you probably won't hit stable 60 fps without a very good one, rather than a video card.

Upscaling tech is too advanced to be complaining about internal resolution. If you have an LG OLED, set sharpness between 10-20, set Super Resolution to medium and carry on enjoying the game. There's no artifacting or input lag.

Why even waste Ressources for such a bad performance mode ?

Because having more options is never a bad thing

Or is it just one of Phil's balls in my throat?
Dunno, feel like a lot of the people making a big issue out of this didn't play the demo and probably never planned on playing the game anyway.

So like you and Starfield ?

Someone cut me straight, does this game look next gen or not?

As per John in the video, the dimly lit areas look the best, the brightly lit areas have a "cross-geny" look. But if you're excited for the game, don't let that stop you from picking it up.

If playing in performance mode, would it be better playing on a 27 1440p monitor vs a 55 inch 4k tv? Thinking it will look sharper and the low resolution won't look as bad compared to playing it on the tv

The smaller screen will make the resolution issues less noticeable. But you'll still feel the judder when running around. The one big benefit the 30 FPS mode has is that it's consistent. The performance mode is 35~60 when running around.

The demo is good but the performance was ass. Then they came out and said there will be a day 1 patch to fix performance and the demo was an old build. There is a lot of bullshit surrounding this game.

- no need for a day 1 patch, game is super polished
- worked with sony engineers to bring out the full power of the ps5

Then the game comes out and it’s dropping to 720p without holding 60 fps. Give it a pass if you want but this isn’t acceptable performance imo. Seems like the best thing to do is play it in 30 fps.

So, are we using the internal resolutions and not the ones on screen now as a barometer for performance? Because if that is what we are doing it is fud.

In the Quality mode which is how I played the demo the game looks and runs fine and it isn't 720p.

Thought as much. The performance mode doesn't feel like 60fps are supposed to feel at all. I switched to quality mode a few hours into the game... And I usually can't stand 30fps modes. But In this case I'll take super stable 30fps over 60fps with the framepacing all over the place.....
This game deserved potent PC hardware.

While I agree with what you are saying, FSR1 is kinda shit, I think it could be like Forspoken which also uses FSR1 on PS5, I think Square need to try a few more things.

Can't ask much of a U$500 machine. For what it is, it delivers. If anything else, there's a PC version coming in the future and I'm super curious about what the minimum and recommended specs will be.
Disagree, for as much as I dislike aloy as a character, HFW shows what high quality devs can get out of that $500 machine. It’s just a lack of development prowess( which is understandable, as there aren’t 100 Michael Jordan’s either) as there are clear cut examples of what the ps5 can accomplish at this stage.

Reviews said in battles it stays 60fps though? It's just traversing the towns you see the drops (and supposively they're fixing that)? At least it gets that correct, the battles are when you actually need the framerate to be 60.

The problem with 30fps is it just doesn't look any good to me in motion, despite running at higher res.

A. Bad 100% of the time in motion (sure 30fps mode probably looks good in still scenes). Upscales from ~1200p.
B. Smooth motion most of the time and bad some of the time, but also without the dumb exaggerated motion blur. But upscales at times from 720p.

I go with B. I can't play it in A.

Lol, I’ve preordered the game and completed the demo. There’s nothing groundbreaking about the small corridor levels in ffxvi that should require some monster PC in order to get reasonable performance. A lot of ppl are enjoying Jedi Survivor as well, but you’d be damn near blind to suggest these two games run well or that they are pushing to the very boundaries of what the ps5 can really do. It’s just sloppy, that’s all.

Yoshida says that for the same experience and quality you must have at least a 2000$ pc...
It's bullshit.

DF and fanboys keep making a scandal because Starfield is 30 FPS but pretend everything is fine with Jedi Survivor's 620 p and FF16's 720p with terrible performance.

This is one of the less impressive looking FF ever and a weak action game at 30 FPS.
