Digital Foundry: Leaked FSR4 INT8 Test: RDNA 3, RDNA 2, Steam Deck, Asus ROG Ally, Nvidia + Xbox Series X Simulation

Or is it just one of Phil's balls in my throat?

A new version of FSR4 was recently leaked by AMD (!), opening the door to high quality upscaling for any GPU that supports INT8 machine learning instructions. That means a range of products ranging from every RDNA 2 or RDNA 3 based GPU, including Steam Deck and ROG Ally handhelds. Rich takes a look at image quality and performance across a range of devices - including Nvidia (!) and even ballpark simulations of how FSR4 could run on Xbox Series X.

I still wonder why MS could have done something about this for Series X a long time ago and have a clear edge over the PS5 but never did.
The only time I remember ML being mentioned this gen was for that muscle deformation in Spider-Man?

Data say that FSR4 could be an extra option in many games on XSX (much like PSSR is on PRo when some games let you choose).
In quality modes targeting 30fps, they could improve IQ even with a lower base resolution.

But as Richard says in the video, it's hard to expect it to be implemented in multi-platform developments more when FSR4 isn't possible on PS5.

Practically everything would depend on MS first doing its part and implementing FSR4 in the XSX GDK..... It would be laughable if MS spent so much on including int8 in the XS hardware (and also advertising this technological advantage over PS5) only to not take advantage of it when it has the opportunity and it's not difficult to implement. 🤷

So much data density...

I always have to pause Richard's videos every 30 seconds to figure out all the information he's presenting.

Fsr 4 for xsx but not ps5 damn

This was the int8 and int4 support that was in RDNA2 for Xsx and Xss.
+ HW VRS tier2 (not as good as recent software VRS implementations), + mesh shaders (took till late 2025 before used in two! game), + sampler feedback (useless tech)

RDNA 1.5 is back

EDIT : No gonna interest for Series X to use it, instead to lost 10 fps cost.. still better to use FSR3 instead this fake ass FSR4

You can bet all your balls that Leadbetter doesn't miss the opportunity to relaunch the narrative about the hardware better engineered.

are we getting angry about them stating simple and relevant facts again? couldn't be a DF thread without that happening I guess.

"PS5 doesn't support int8, a relevant fact relating to FSR4"
"HOW DARE HE SAY THAT!"

Quite funny we see fsr4 on steam deck but sony still struggle with pssr on ps5pro almost year after premiere. Also showing how microsoft hw team was ahead of Mark Cerny predictions though shame software utiization wasn't there.

Didnt watch the video but did they compare FSR 3 in say quality vs 'FSR4' in performance? One of the main advantages of the latest batch of upscalers is to be able to use lower base resolutions with minimal impact to image quality.

This post has supposed to be a sense or what? In what why sony struggle with PSSR? Because there are games with artifacts issues even on pc which using upscaler cause artifacts especially with UE5. I would like to see FSR4 at 720p scaled to 4k hope to be wrong but I'm not so sure the IQ it's that pristine there.

Considering everyone is abandoning the Series S/X, I doubt anyone will bother with it.
But at least the full RDNA2 on PC is already benefiting from FSR Int8. Even if it's just a mod.
I already heard this excuse by DF. Early because ps5 had more userbase so series X port were all rushed and underperformed, now because it's doesn't sell, they won't put the FSR4. If it's that simple and fast, they have just to support it in their SdK or whatever it needs to do, end of the story. Multiplat games are still released on the hardware in the end. The thing is that I'm not convinced it's that free to use on Series X but sure it's just my opinion.

It's a fact, the Xbox Series S/X is pretty much dead. So there is no reason to go the extra mile.
Meanwhile, if the PS5 had support for DP4A, we could start seeing games using FSR4 soon enough. That would be great news for anyone with a PS5.

What does this mean though:
So has Sony confirmed FSR4 for PS5 Pro next year? It literally says that at the top of this article. If so, if Xbox doesn't get it, isn't this story actually better for Sony than Microsoft? Isn't it confirmed here Sony will implement it but up in the air if MS will? MS seems to be not selling the hardware and trying to get new hardware out so will devs or MS really take the time to implement FSR4 on XSX? I doubt it, but I think Sony will put their version of it(read the article) on PS5 Pro, so who my friends is laughing now?

Don't think would be that suitable even with such stuff inside. I'm looking to the PSSR costs in the gpu and ps5 pro also has the CUs costumization for that.

We have seen that it is suitable.
FSR4 Int4 at performance mode, is better than FSR or TSR in quality modes.
So we get the same performance, with better image quality.
It's a shame that the PS5 will never get a good upscaler. But at least RDNA2 on PC and the PS5 Pro will get FSR4 Int8.

You people always forgot how expensive is already PSSR on ps5 pro hardware which is heavily customised. I suppose FSR4 it's more or less the same. Games always used to be quite lower resolution to make it less expensive and still it dries also 5 fps from the perfomance. You really think XSX or ps5 hardware can sustain easily the FSR4 without important defences? I'm not so convinced.

We have already seen tests on PC, with GPUs with similar performance to consoles, running FSR4 very well. And this is just a mod based on the AMD leak.
Performance and image quality will probably improve with the proper official release.
You keep ignoring that FSR4 looks better at a lower resolution, than FSR3 or TSR at a higher base resolution.

PC is not a console. What cpu it's used on pc? What RAM and bandwith have the cpu and gpu?

These upscalers don't run on the CPU.
Stop making silly excuses.
And here where you are wrong. Yes cpu not use upscaler but dedicate and splitted bandwidth and RAM help the gpu to save resources for other stuff. Many developers told me explaining why AF is always more expensive on console as other graphic setting compared the pc. That's why I'm cautionary about the possibility of FSR4 in such console.

Series X DID have secret sauce and was like MSs pro console from the get go. What do you know.

Shame they didn't have any of this ready to be able to actually show us.....MS are just great at lining everything up... /s

Here you go again with the memory bandwidth again.
We have already seen GPUs on RDNA2 that have much less memory bandwidth, running FSR4 Int8.

I mean don't believe me I can survive. But a close hardware not work like a pc. The gpu costs for some stuff can be different because it uses an unified RAM and bandwidth.

FFS, there are GPUs with much lower memory bandwidth already running the leaked FSR4.
And consoles, being closed software and hardware, have lower level APIs and greater opportunities for optimization.
Why do you keep insisting that consoles can't run a proper modern, quality, AI upscaler?

Wait, so Xbox Series X "Could" run FSR4 but PS5 couldnt?

Thats pretty great for the Lulz, if AMD / MS can get it working.
Anything could run it.
Not anything would be able to run it fast enough for running it to actually result in a performance uplift.
PS5 doesn't support INT8 but it does support 2x speed FP16. A version of FSR4 for FP16 could work on it but the gains will probably be on the lower scale side and you'd have to use high upscaling ratios to compensate through lower rendering resolution.

well, he shows in the video how it would currently run on PS5 by trying to use it on RDNA1. it completely breaks, almost looks like a 90s movie representation of a virus taking over your screen lol.

an even more downgraded version would not really be worth it. it already looks worse than the original RDNA4 version

The fact it can run doesn't mean it's free and feasible; I repeat again the example of the ps5pro with the PSSR, we already seen how much expensive is thr AI upscaler on it just imagine in an hardware without customization.
