Digital Foundry: PlayStation 5 Pro Review: The Digital Foundry Verdict

lh032

I cry about Xbox and hate PlayStation.
Gta6 is not a normal game, people are gonna buy the game anyway even without a perf mode, this is what i tried to say, of course if there is a perf mode people are gonna chose it, dah, that was not my point.

But if there is none, the game is not gonna lose a single client because people have been waiting for this thing for 10 years, i don't see ANYONE hyped for the game not buying it because it doesn't have a perf mode, hard to think otherwise, maybe if it was any other game, but not the damn gta6.
i dont know, i think console gamer standard change now.
Last gen 30 fps, this gen they expect 60fps.

Well im not rockstar, we shall see i guess. I am hoping for a performance mode, regardless of stable 60fps or not, its always better than 30fps.

Locked 120fps, native 4k mode in GT7 unpatched as per John. Pretty damn impressive.

EDit: Damn them if they remove it, as a non VRR owner (LG C8) that sounded pretty appealing

Edit: Damn I just remembered the C8 can't even output 120hz at 4k, it's limited to 1080p. Would still be useful because it would mean a locked 120hz at least.

I feel like if they did update or change the CPU, then that’d essentially make it a next gen console. As we’ve seen last gen with the mid gen pro machines, the CPU really isn’t touched.
Yeah, but it was by far the largest bottleneck in the last pro systems. And it's like they learned nothing this time around.

If they can't change the architecture, then they could at least increase the clocks/cache enough to make it perform like an actual 8 core zen2 CPU should. Or even better, retrofit a 3950X varient into the system.

Yeah but like i said, this is gta6, arguably the most hyped game of the last 10 years, this is not your average release.

I think the best you can hope is a 40hz mode but i'm 90% sure that rockstar is not gonna even bother.

Save this post for future reference.

If they're 'biased' why the fuck do you care what they have to say?

I don't see this evidence of the CPU being a major bottleneck. This isn't like the PS4 gen which was shackled to a horrible CPU that was painfully low power and out of date before the system even came out.

The image boost feature is frustrating to me as a programmer. If they can intercept the image and apply filters on top then why cant they somehow determine the resolution and enhance it on the fly?

i understand games on consoles are a closed book, but as an architect, i would love to go in there and figure out how to change resolution for older games. There is definitely information being shared. lets find it and change it. or apply more than just a fucking filter on it. if it adds input lag then fine, just put that in as a warning. its a feature that can be toggled on and off anyway.

I said it was the biggest bottleneck LAST GEN, not this gen (at least with the base systems). The issue here is that the improved GPU in the Pro will likely make the CPU a problem now, which is why it should have been improved too.

Fair enough. But msot PS5 games already run at 60fps, PS5 Pro is designed to assist with that in terms of graphics setting, and has PSSR to help it. I don't think it's an issue and if anything, leaving the CPU alone makes more sense this gen than it did last gen.

So yeah rockstar have zero interest in making a perf mode that probably require a lot of time and betatesting, they are elite enough to do the fuck they want and people are still gonna buy their game en masse, you know it, i know it.

IMO the gen and peoples expectations have changed. I agree it probably wont affect sales but it will affect mine. I don't care about GTA that much. I guess GTA has to decide if it's willing to take the hit because people will bring it up and it will be bad publicity.

Ps5 boost mode is decent. Metaphor run at lock 60, ER run at above 50 fps pretty much all the time, Ghostwire Tokyo 60 fps in quality mode.
Perfect, I'm more than halfway through the game, but took a pause to play LiS Double Exposure. Gonna resume my Metaphor playthrough as soon as I get the Pro.

The PSSR look really good in Stellar Blade basically like John said the PSSR mode has a better IQ than the mode where the game is running at native 4K with TAA.

Huge praise for Forbidden West wich has the best image quality of a console game they've ever seen. Compared to a high end PC game. Guerrilla is not using the PSSR but their own new upscale tech.

Sony exactly said up to 45% meaning it is best case possible. On average it will be 30% to 35%.

I wonder why people won't use common sense and compared it with RTX 4070 without it's using own brain, which is basically 80% to 90% faster than PS5 on average not up to.

I don't think a game like gta6 is not gonna take any sensible hit for not having a perf mode, so agree to disagree.
Like you said yourself you are not that interested in gta to begin with, but hundreds of millions of people are and they give 2 fucks about perf mode in a game that is gonna be probably the most advanced piece of tech in the market, people are gonna understand that to have a real city simulation, there are sacrifices to do, and you can't always ask 60fps to these old, underpowered consoles.

I think that even undecited people are gonna change their mind when the first gameplay video is gonna hit youtube.

I don't think you people understand how much different the release of gta6 is compared to the release of pretty much any other game in the market if you really think that the lack of a perf mode is gonna be negative in any significant way for such a juggernaut.

Because PSSR = DLSS

Otherwise it makes more sense to compare it to 7700/7800xt

From here, the question is whether Game Boost accurately represents the entirety of PS5 Pro's extra horsepower - or whether there are limitations that mean you don't see all of the GPU's additional capabilities. With that in mind, many commentators have compared the Pro's rasterisation performance to the RX 6800. Based on our Elden Ring tests with quality settings comparable to PS5 (and ramped slightly higher if there is no exact match with consoles), the 6800 is faster. This is just one test though: it require a good deal more research to get a firm handle on how performant the Pro really is.

DF said several times in the video that they don't know for sure if the PS5 Pro is using its full power in boost mode.

We need to see how games compare to a 6800 on pre-patch and post-patched games to get a good idea of how it works.

More like 60-70% for the 4070. 90% is closer to 4070S territory.

Also, those are unpatched games.

How the fuck is FF16 not locked 60 at 1080p
they mention it might be something with how the DRS is working, same with Elden Ring.
Main thing is that not all unpatched games will have same gains. It depends a lot on the engine and other undelying things.
edit: overall very positive review

Why they keep hammering Dragon dogma 2 like that. So it is a known issue regard to RT when swinging the camera.

What about overall image quality and frame rate compare to the ps5? I guess we will see they have a separate video for that?

Basically this era entirely about CPU bottleneck and minimal graphical difference.

I wonder how developer were able to optimize games for PS4, where the graphic difference minimal but when they got PS5 still struggling to find the right balance.

FSR, DLSS and PSSR, and massive TFLOPS has made developer lazy and don't care about optimization.
