Digital Foundry : Star Wars Outlaws Switch 2

- Performance is 'remarkably consistent' at 30fps without any frame pacing issues
- An isolated frame drop or two seen at worst and some cut-scenes can show a single drop at camera cuts
- Series S's 30fps ran with frame pacing issue and showed a couple of extra drops comparatively

Mozza Mozza explains why I was surprised it was 30fps.

I see, so Epic is holding on to the past. They need to let it die.........kill it if the have to.
Not only that, they want to cover too much: Too many platforms, too wide BC, too many genres, too many use cases for everything, you'll see many devs complaining about UE bloat, Unity handles this way better imo.

Ubisoft and Id Software have their priorities way better set, same for any other first party dev like Nintendo or Sony.

Lumen is the result of Epic doing mental gymnastic because consoles can't do RT, it will eventually be phrased out.

their UE4 RT solution also had tons of issues tho. it looked far better, but was insanely taxing.
I think they overcorrected. they saw how bad the perfomance of their UE4 solution was, went full tilt into "we need to make it run on everything" mode, and sacrificed quality while still having relatively bad perfomance.

It is not in a 200 watts console, but it is in a handheld that consumes 9 watts in a AAA game.

Pretty much. It was really easy to believe the GVG guy saying this game ran "poorly" on Switch 2 because very few people actually thought Switch 2 would get games like this at all. Including myself. So OverHeat OverHeat .....you ain't alone, buddy. To get it actually running well even at 30fps is impressive. That doesn't make 30fps "extraordinary" but I think it is safe to say, at this point, that the ceiling for Switch 2 is higher than many of us thought it was. I don't think most of us will mind being "wrong" when it is to our benefit.

So are we back to Switch 2 Docked > Switch 2 > Steam Deck in performance yet? Or can the Deck get to this level with some patches maybe? This game can't even run in a playable state on the Deck iirc.

Still love the power/performance profile of the Switch 2, particularly docked @ under 20W.

the issue the Deck has here is that is has an AMD GPU. it's essentially impossible to have decent RT perfomance on the deck unless it's a highly optimised game like Indiana Jones.

Pretty fucking impressive port:

- stable fps without framepacing issues
- RTGI
- DLSS
- not terrible resolution (720->1440 DLSS)
- game looks similar to SS version

SW2 version is better than Series S in some aspects (frame pacing). Snowdrop engine is probably in Top 3 engines right now.

That is crazy. Is this a key card game or fully on the cart?

It's a key card game. They said that they couldn't put it on the card because the card's data speed (I think that's right) is too slow, so it needs to be installed to the Switch's internal storage.

the Internet is just so weird. First we had Star Wars is an absolutely MESS on Switch 2 prior to release to now it being the best port and a showcase piece for what the switch 2 can do...

But I thought we had another thread saying this game was/looked awful running on Switch 2... Surely they weren't wrong??? And here I was thinking Switch 2 couldn't run current gen games well enough.

Another life destroyed by a deleted post.

yeah just don't have the opinion that it's funny that that long thread was all about a game that isn't exactly an award winner in the first place.

at least I was told that kind of talk isn't allowed here lol.

It can't. Don't worry. I mean not without important cutbacks. But surely this is an impressive port.
