DIRT 5 | PlayStation 5 Special Look | Gameplay and Next-Gen Details

Can I just ask, sorry for off topic but....

I see alot of hype around 3D audio, is it that much better or different to Dolby Surround or is it buzzwords?

The DualSense alone makes for a lot multiplatform games the PS5 the best version for me!

It's not "only" about graphics anymore, but immersion.

If you have a good pair of headphones you can tell the difference, but don't expect anything earth shattering in this game

Am I the only person who thinks the game looks pretty ho-hum?

I don't see anything special to it.

Or is this a case of "it looks better in person" kinda situation?

Cause it look pretty arcadey for a series that I recall strived to be quite photo realistic at the start of the franchise - unless I'm remembering it wrong.

If it's implemented, it's HRTF-based, it's a massive step over 7.1 surround. Dolby Atmos on PC has HRTF-based 3D audio version and 7.1 version, but uses 32 sources max vs hundreds of sources on The Tempest 3D as Mark Cerny stated. It should work with any good 2.0 stereo, no need for 7.1 channel.

It must be done on a GPU level like the Tempest that's GPU-based compute unit. Not too long and we'll experience it by ourselves.

For the audiophiles out there, it's worth knowing that Bluepoint and Sony have "remade thousands of thousands of new sound effects to add into" levels. Then using 3D audio on PS5 brought that to life. Moore said you'll be able to hear arrows fly past your head creatures crawl out of the slime in the Valley of Defilement.

We dont know yet, but the Tempest Engine applies a kind of proceesing that emulates how a human head perceives positional audio:

Kinda similar of binaural audio, that gets captured with a couple of ear-shaped mics.

If they did it work good enough, I'm sure it will be better that fake surround on headphones.

Yes Demon Souls audio really is a step above thus far!

Thanks for that, I will have to test on my kids PS5's as I'm Xbox only for now :(

if your using headphones, i highly suggest paying the small fee for dolby atmos for the xbox ecosystem (huge upgrade in sound)

this looking sick for the duel sense (might have to get a ps5 mid gen refresh)

I have it already thanks.

OT, I am getting Dirt 5 on the 10th, looks really fun with busy tracks and a good sense of speed. Weather effects look awesome too, though Driveclub was also the dogs bollocks.

It could be pretty disturbing like that famous barber shop video on youtube. It's critical for online gaming as it has superior locality accuracy.

XSX should have a very good audio experience as well even without being HRTF-based.

Somehow I perceive better image quality in this footage than in XSX version? Anyone else or I woke up biased af?

It's a promotional video by Codemasters, so it's not the best source for comparison.

That said, they claim to have refined the game since the early build shown on XsX previews, so maybe?

Honestly this game gives me good vibes, the graphics are serviceable and the gameplay looks fun-not too serious which I loved from the driveclub games, I recently tried Forza Horizen 4 and get a similar vibe from this, just something you can sit down and enjoy and not need to be a pro gamer.

Im intrigued, maybe not £70 intrigued but would check it out in a sale or something.

I think most people agree with you, me included. It has arcadey/cartoony graphics overall.

Or via wireless dongle for compatible headset that we already have. I'm glad that Sony went the extra mile to install RealTek audio chip inside the DualSense to improve mic/speaker quality, Haptic Feedback is also sound-based, and process The Tempest 3D audio. Not sure if it'll support 7.1 channel this time, but I think it will.

Any screen tearing?

Seems like solid fps and stable image so far, no tearing.

I think I already shared this link with you before but what you say is not true. Dolby Atmos is not limited to 32 sources: https://developer.dolby.com/blog/spatial-audio-and-the-ps5/

It must be done on a GPU level like the Tempest that's GPU-based compute unit.
And that's also wrong. It's true that it needs a lot of computing power and that's why a CU is a good fit but that doesn't mean it needs to be done on the GPU. In fact, if I recall correctly, the Tempest Engine in the PS5 is not inside the GPU. A powerful enough audio processor would also work

1)Read the damage control:

No, that is incorrect. As a technology, Dolby Atmos can support hundreds of simultaneous objects.

That being said, we fall back on sage advice from developers of some of the first Atmos games: Objects are a fantastic tool, but restraint should be shown with respect to the number of objects active at any time. Too many objects in motion can create a confusing soundscape.

Developers have also told us that avoiding the horizontal "bed" for an all-object mix is an unnecessarily time-consuming and labor-intensive effort. So far, developers are creating next-generation mixes by blending bed audio and object audio. More is good, but more may not necessarily be "better."

2)AMD thinks otherwise:

AMD had to reserve 4 CU's back then though, for only 32 sound sources:

And even this being old, it's the best out there, showing GPU-based 3D audio and how dynamic it is:

And I didn't say PS5 will use the main GPU, because the Tempest is a GPU-based CU, cache-less, SPU-like. It might need the intersection engines in the main GPU though to ray trace the audio sources, or it might do it independently.

This one works: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/youtube_downloader_webx/

It saves video and audio as two separate WebM files, but for graphics comparisons it shouldn't matter. It's a Firefox extension, don't know if it also exists for other browsers.

Yeah, that's the one I was using, and downloaded further files in the system to merge both audio and video. It got blocked by youtube maybe few days back, sadly. I was trying to download the new spiderman gameplay with that cartoony suit to extract some screenshots.

Yes, ps5 does not have that ninja doing the screen tearing which is exclusive

Interested to see if this looks any different from the XSX version.

They should have canned 120hz support though and focussed on maximal graphical fidelity with 60 frames.

Yeah, those aren't worth it. That previous one used to download the best possible WebM file, but it got blocked by youtube few days ago as it seems to be working a week or less before.
