Dishonored |OT| The belle of the ball

The last few levels of this game really started to drag for me. At the start I thought it was incredible, by the end I wasn't overly bothered with it.

I actually didn't pay any attention to it and picked it up on a whim, and I was pleasantly surprised at the results. It all comes down to your expectations going in.

I got super hyped at E3 and it's been my most anticipated game of the year. I had extremely high hopes and feel like it delivered handily.

That's kind of where I am with it, unfortunately. I'm not done but the last few missions have been more frustrating than fun. Still some moments of greatness in them but the first half of this game was so fantastic that it's kind of a bummer.

Dishonored was extremely forgettable, overhyped, dull and lacking ambition. Even the reviewers I had most respect for were guilty of overanticipating and overrating the game.
Lacking ambition?

Name me a game that's as different and unique as Dishonored. You're lucky it wasn't another COD: Dishonored Edition.

So I've reached the second to last mission and I must say that all in all, I'm kinda disappointed. It’s a good game and it looks fantastic and plays well, but Blink essentially breaks it, making it beyond easy to bypass anything with little to no problems. Also, the way ive been playing has had way too many trial and error moments that become more tedious than fun. When Im going through a game like this that bleeds its atmosphere all over the place, and Im not reading anything about it and have no interest in the worlds lore, then something is wrong. The story also leaves a lot to be desired compared to the games that inspired it.

BioShock and Half Life still kick the crap out of it in my opinion.

I don't understand this either. The
flooded district
was my favorite level, and the following ones were good too.

Yeah makes no sense to me either. The narrative driving that section and the overall look is so well done. I love the enemies in that area as well and the whole dynamic between
Daud and his crew is really interesting.

Bioshock aint that good man.

I think I'm pretty much done with this for now, too. Got my 'Clean Hands'-achievement and knocked some others out while at it. Haven't done a High Chaos playthrough yet, but I don't really feel like that at the moment. Gonna move back to ME3 and AC:R while waiting for ACIII to come out.

Aside from the short tutorial, you are never required to use it in the game. Why not try a no blink run?

Haha it definitely is but that was a game that's presentation was so good I glossed over how utterly boring it was.

No matter how much you like it mentioning it in the same sentence as Half Life is blasphemy.

I mention it in the same line because clearly DH was inspired by those two games in some way and that's all I keep thinking about while playing it. And I didn't find BioShock boring whatsoever. The environment sucked me right in, as did the characters and storyline which are pivotal factors for me when playing games nowadays.

I can agree this game isn't especially ambitious. It is one thing to add all sorts of weird tools to a stealth game (turning map hacking, warping into central mechanics), it is another to make a game based on those tools. Are we lucky to have this kind of game? Maybe. It is not particularly noteworthy besides the layered level design of an older era. It doesn't deliver on its many great ideas and we shouldn't be so hungry for a certain type of game as to turn an average meal into a world class one. I almost made that mistake with Human Revolution and it was easier to not make it here.

I wonder if making painted graphics is harder than realistic graphics. I have no real grasp on that comparison. I'm close to making a thread asking people to explain to me.

I wouldn't think so but it's a interesting thought. I think it's just a product of not having the resources to accomplish it all. That's why I desperately want this game to be a success so they can go all out.

Yeah I think the Environment, Characters and atmosphere are really excellent in BShock. I just think the actual gameplay is extremely dull.

To be fair, I don't really believe in the "You don't need to use it" argument. If the game gives you the tools, why not use them?
On the other hand, I don't think Blink is THAT overpowered. Sure, it's quite an ability, but it's also pretty clear the level design was built around it, and not just "Hey, let's put teleporting on this finished game". It's also a pretty great bonus to combat, especially with tallboys, and makes everything feel more dynamic and fluid.
My two cents.

I had a lot more fun by turning off the UI and never once touching Dark Vision

Why not use them? Because the game is more fun without.

I do have a feeling that this is gonna be one of those experiences that I shelve for awhile after I'm finished and then six months or so down the line, it'll dawn on me on how great it really was, and i'll end up playing through a second time not giving a shit about stealth, and probably have an absolute blast compared to my first time.

Well, of course. If you don't think something is fun you don't have to use it. I'm pretty sure there was a gamebreaking move in Shank, but I never bothered to use it because it was so much better without it.
Then again, as I said, Blink is pretty much a part of the level design itself. Of course you can play without it - it's the point of the game, after all -, but I don't see the point in this case.
Then again, your world, your options.

Not to interject my thoughts or speak on behalf of others, but the "you don't need to use it" argument pertains to the fact that it's hampering the enjoyment of Andrew.'s experience with the game. The answer to "why not use them?" would be because, in his case, using them "breaks the game" or makes it too easy or not fun; in this instance, the fact that you are not required by the game to use the ability is an advantage.

I personally agree with the entirety of the rest of your post and I get the impression DukeBobby would as well, and was just offering a suggestion so as to make the play experience more enjoyable for another gamer.

edit: What breaks the game in Shank? My save file went on vacation when I was at the next to last mission and I'd do just about fucking anything to cheese my way back up to that point.

There was a grab move that couldn't be blocked by any enemy and can be just mindlessly spammed around.
Why do it, though? It's not fun.

Oh, yeah, that's no use against environmental hazards which kill me the most though hehe.

And see above, I have to just retread through every mission I painstakingly skilled my way through originally cause my save file disappeared :'(

Kinda, I guess. Something about the repressive, crumbling aesthetic coupled with the retrograde tech.

Needs more weird insect women sex though.

Everything could use more weird insect women sex.

But other things, besides. The oppressive government and the steampunk tech are obvious. Other connections...Dunwall sort of exists in its own, little bubble like New Crobuzon does. They consider themselves the sole light of civilization in the entire world, with 99% of the planet remains unexplored and mysterious.

That, and the idea of a still-beating heart that tells its user who deserves to die, and why, is a very Mievillian idea to me even though it has no direct analog.

I partially agree. I do like the game but it did leave a bit of a disappointing taste after it was done, and it's growing now that I'm going through it again. It's probably going to be my game of the year because of how terrible this year has been but I don't know if I'll feel all that great about doing it.

Maybe if Walking Dead finishes strong in the last episode I'll put that there instead. Or if AC3 blows me away, which I'm not expecting it to.

After finishing it I agree about Blink being too much. It was still fun to use, but it really was too powerful and too easy to spam.

At the first of the game I thought it was amazing and genius, but that honeymoon phase certainly ends quick.

Still loved the game overall thought.

The worst I can remember. I'm in danger of not having a top 10 for the first time ever, it all hinges on the last few games coming out this year that I want being good. I thought 2011 was bad but even after taking Skyrim out I still could get a top 10 without trying too hard. This year's been a real struggle. I went about 6 months straight without playing a good new release. I played stuff in that time but they were all bad.

Interesting how differently people feel towards this game, and especially when taking into account completion times. Personally I've played it for well over 25 hours and I'm currently at the flooded district. I've reloaded many, many times working out which routes to take and what powers to use.

For me, I have no interest in using any of the powers except blinking around and stabbing people. I just don't want to, like to, or need to use them. I like the feeling of warping around the battlefield stabbing people left and right. I even do it to enemies that I don't have to fight at all.

I don't see how anyone can say this has been a dreadful year for games and actually mean it, I've consistently found games that have been worth playing and it's been as good as previous years.

Totally agree, some people have really high standards it seems or not many gaming platforms.

For me, 2012 has been the year of surprises:

Dishonored
Sleeping Dogs
Journey
Spec Ops: The Line
The Walking Dead

I never would have thought that these 5 games would become some of my favourite games of this generation.

I do have high standards but that's only because I feel like things should keep progressing forward or it makes no sense, and gaming has not progressed much since the late 90s/early 2000s.

Wether you liked the game or not, a comment like this is totally unacceptable.

But congrats on the 10 replies, mission accomplished I suppose.

Yeah man in fact the games were so bad they pushed me into the arms of past lovers. I started playing Skyrim again cause Dragons Dogma was doing nothing for me. I beat Vanquish again twice cause of how terrible RE6 was. I haven't tried X-Com out yet so I am excited about that.

Journey was indeed spectacular.

Back to Dishonored. There are some fantastic moments in this game. I was just remembering
the Duel you get to have during the party. At first I couldn't figure out what that guy was going on and on about then hearing them count down to one turning on slow time and lining up a headshot was soooooo gratifying.

Have you played Mark of the Ninja? Best stealth game this year by far, ghosting (not even touching enemies) is even more fun in that with the different costumes.

I may get to it during a Steam sale. I've been burned by so many 2D indie games that have been the flavor of the month over here on Gaf to immediately jump in on one.
