Do you think Metal Gear is an ideology?

aw shit what's going on in this thread?

now what I expected. I was thinking we would discuss the common themes that seem to be consistent in the MG series, such as misuse and abuse of honor and bravery, misguided sacrifice, idealism that causes pain to all around it, etc.

Military industrial complex, technology turning against us, and then the backstabbing on top of backstabbing. His view of the world is frighteningly realistic, even reflected through the broken mirror of a fictional video game.

Indeed.
Going NUCLEAR is now going Batzi.

No. It's time we get together, all of us, and cheer. Cheer for our leader and the man who influenced us all, Kojima-san.

Ideology isn't necessarily just religion.

But I guess it's more fun to make religious jokes than to have a serious conversation.

A serious conversation. About the ideology of a video game.

Metal Gear is about telling is war is bad, and us not caring because we're having fun playing war, and Kojima laughing at us.

I understand what the OP is going for. Sad so many have derailed the topic

I even wrote college papers on the themes expressed in the MG series

So much deeper than most games. The main theme overall is peace and how to achieve it. You also have the whole GENE, MEME, SCENE, SENSE concepts that discuss what makes a person who they are.

Enemies are relative and constantly changing with the times

Here is a big example of the deepness of the topics in the games:

Thank you for understanding.

kojima has been trying to teach the coming generation ever since mgs2, in which he attempted to leave a message not just to us but primarily to the team he was working with

i think V will be about becoming more than human, a symbol and a message strong enough to live after you die

I think there is an element of didacticism to his work with some of the themes in his games.

The end game rants from the antagonists in MG games always fill me with some sort of new world order anti-war anti-consumerist/world-in-chaos type but try your best anyway kind of inspiration. It's hard to describe, but somehow all of Kojima's nonsense, makes sense.

That's his stock-in-trade. Subtlety aint in the guy's dictionary. Every game ends with a long rant (or several) that pretty much turn all of the game's subtext into text so as to make sure the viewer understands. MGS3 is the least offensive in this regard (and that's why it's the best MGS game).

MGS games aren't profound, they just spell out all their themes so the player doesn't have to do any interpretation beyond Literature 101 stuff. The series has completely jumped up its own ass wrt to its fascination with its own mythos (or lore) too, from MGS4 and onwards especially.

Solidus Snake was clear cut in his aims. Rid the world of the Patriots while simultaneously leaving his historical legacy since he cannot leave a biological one. The Boss was simply fulfilling a mission, the details of which are revealed in Snake Eater. Her inner justification was to mend the divided world as one or at least keep it from dividing further.

When you get to Liquid Snake, Big Boss, and especially Oceliquid things become more conceptual. Less tangible goals. They wanted a world where soldiers were valued and in Oceliquid's case a world where people felt the horrific effects of war by tearing the system's sop buffer down (it would stabilize soldier emotions when they should have experienced fear or sorrow)

Never thought of it that way, but you are right in a sense now that I think about the end game dialogue.

I still very much enjoy the themes and tone of the game. I am the same way with music. I enjoy things much more when they are conveying a story or message. So much media is too simplistic and leaves no lasting impression

The very first radio conversation you have with the Boss, she literally says

TODAYS FRIENDS MAY BE TOMORROW'S ENEMIES

MGS3 is absolutely not more subtle than the other games in the series imo.

I would say that fits easily within the context of her being his mentor, and the situation they have found themselves in. Doesn't seem out of place or forced to me.

And even then people didn't understood what MGS2 was about. Go figure.

Its not out of place or forced, but it is very plainly and explicitly stating a theme of the game. MGS3 slaps the player in the face with the 'changing times' theme repeatedly (even including it in the johnny sasaki cameo lol) just like MGS1 reminds the player every 10 minutes about how nukes are bad and everywhere. Its not bad or anything, I'm just pointing out that its not subtle is all.
