With a big day 1 firmware upgrade and millions of software downloads… Do you think that Nintendo servers are going to survive the launch day of the Switch 2?

They already support the server infra to release firmware updates to the existing 150m+ Switch 1 consoles and those go fine.

I voted Zero Chance, but that's my FOMO speaking, mine is being shipped estimated for June 10. Wish I selected in store pickup or at least express shipping (can't change it.)

Gonna be a lot of people downloading World so lets see. I think it will be OK but I've been debating this as well. I just hope the servers aren't throttled and we can use more data then we could with Switch.

I'm almost tempted to pay for a year of their shit service just to crush people on Soul Calibur 2 online.

I never stopped playing it. No one stands a chance.

Their infrastructure does not exist to support all 150 million people using their servers at the same time. It has been scaled to an expected peak of a few million at the same time. When the traffic exceeds that capacity, things crash. it's why the eShop and PSN go down every Christmas, even though Nintendo and PlayStation sell 100 million units and have a network catered to that audience size, no one ever maintains server capacity based on expected sporadic peaks, that is financially stupid.

This isn't even getting into the facts that:

a) Server capacity isn't limited by the number of people, but the number of server calls. A single person on Switch launch day will be making dozens of server calls, from system transfer, system setup, account setup, system update, game downloads, game purchases, and more.

b) Nintendo's servers are no longer siloed by system, they are shared. The Switch and Switch 2 share the infrastructure. So the servers don't just have to respond to server calls made by new Switch 2 owners, but also for any of the existing 150 million Switch 1 users who may also be online that day

It's gonna crash, pretty badly. It's just how big launches, software and hardware, tend to go.

The Mario Kart World bundle is going to exacerbate the strain on their servers, since it creates a huge incentive for customers to get their major launch title digitally instead of physically.

Edit: I know that personally my launch day plans are entirely digital for the first time ever: redeem the Mario Kart eShop code, download the BotW and TotK upgrade patches, and possibly upgrade Hogwarts Legacy (still on the fence about buying the Switch version in the next couple of days while it's still on sale) and/or buy Fast Fusion. By comparison, when I bought my Switch, I picked up two physical games (BotW and MK8D) and didn't touch the eShop for ... I don't know, maybe weeks?

I voted 'zero chances' but what I mean is that there's be a small hiccup where for maybe 20 mins people get an error message trying to download. It'll be resolved fast and that's the end of it.

Similar to a new iOS launch.

It'll be rough. On top of day one patches and Mario Kart World, I assume loads of people will also be trying out the new Gamechat features and stream each others screens..

Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't Nintendo's servers die on people during one of the recent Christmas periods? Now imagine suddenly adding millions of (very active) players.

Forcing to download a day1 update for the console to start will only increase the scale of the problem.

Given that it takes well over an hour to download basic Pokemon games on Christmas day each year, I am going to say 'no'.

I suppose that's why they are massively limiting the units they are selling.

day 1 might be a bit iffy depending on how many folks have digital copies of all their Switch games I could see the eShop getting some slow down maybe.

Idk, people here told me this console is going to bomb and not a lot of people will buy one, so the servers should be fine if thats the case.

I think they will do ok, but they will probably be screaming from the midnight release times until lunch on Thursday.

I would think you would have some top tiers there. A mid and bottom tier are not going to cut it against my Raphael and Assassin.
I'm definitely stubborn in that I completely shun all FGC tiers and conventional wisdom at every possible chance. I like to try and create my own tiers and my own meta. If I was just copying what the FGC said, I honestly wouldn't have any interest in playing the game.

No. As a matter of fact I think this launch is gonna be a disaster.
