I thought people loved Donna (at least here on GAF), but hated how the writers decided to send her off ('Can't remember, destroy all of space/time'), essentially writing her out of the show for good.

Of RTD's companions, only Martha escaped the "you've been given ultimate power and it's killing you/sucks balls" trap. And, frankly, that's because Martha is incredibly boring.

Yeah, Martha got to go out by enabling one of the single most cringe-worthy facepalm inducing sequences in the show's history. Fitting, really.

Bane? Get them on board, I'll call it in.
As bad some of the other finales can be, at least they have the dignity to avoid comparisons to the god damn Care Bears.

"Come on kids, clap your hands and say "Doctor" if you want him to live! We need all the help we can get!"

I remember being yelled at for saying the same thing earlier. In this fight, you've got my sword!

I've only seen it by itself once, since I got the episodes through alternate means, but you have my axe. I can imagine how annoying it would get when played 13 times.

The blu-ray doesn't have it, thank goodness.

Rewatched the Tennant series completely, and some thoughts:

-Series 2 has the best finale so far of new Who.

-Blink is still fantastic after several rewatches, and I hope we get to see some more horror-tinged episodes on that level.

-Series 3 finale is still awful, but I have a soft-spot for John Simm's performance in the show. Apart from the whole Mel nonsense, I don't think anything of the 11 run reached the same level of bad.

-Donna was a fantastic companion, and I wish they'd not written her out of the show like that. (Also: upsetting to watch Catherine Tate be so good in this and then see her play such a shit, poorly-written character in The Office.)

-Did Billie Piper sound like she was talking differently during the Series 4 finale, or is it just me?

All in all, great show then, great show now, can't wait for series 7.

Series 2 was the most consistent of the RTD run. Love it.

Blink is still king of New Who.

Series 3 finale still hurts after all these years. I always complain about it.

I'd have to agree on the 3 finale hate. My mother walked in on it while I was watching it at the time and she has never come back for more Who. Damn you RTD.

I love all the episodes with Donna but hate Donna. Well, except the finale.

Actually I just hate Catherine Tate. Donna is ok.

I thought Catherine Tate did a great job.

Donna was terrible in The Runaway Bride (and that's the point), and I really liked her in series 4. Seeing her humbled and changed from her travels with the Doctor and having at all taken away was pretty sad.

I also liked that she wasn't falling head-over-heels for him. After Rose and Martha, it as a nice change.

Weird. I think of it as the start of the terrible Finales. It's so hamfisted and bombastic and... bleh. Season 1's was much better.

Goodbye scene at end of series 1>>>>>all other goodbye scenes in New Who.

Fantastic.

Tennant's would have been amazing if they could have just come up with a better final line. The setup was amazing. Should have ended with something like an understated "a lons y" (Yes I butchered that).

The only thing that would have suited the 10th's run would have been a Michael Bay-sized fireworks display, laser show, and intergalactic rock concert with Tennant gleefully prancing around London/Cardiff all the while

Man, I wish we had had one more series with 9, he was so good, including that finale.

I think it's the bittersweet end of Series 2's finale that makes me like it a tad more.

Fantastic.

I decided to watch his regeneration again on YouTube. Probably my favourite sendoff in the series so far. 10 saying "I don't want to go" put a wrinkle in it, I think. 9's "you were fantastic, and you know what? So was I" was the best last words.

Just watched it too. Horrible to see what RTD used to be able to do, the entire scene is wonderful - especially the build up. A man in love with his work and the show.

Such good stuff. Series 1 overall is just this wonderful wee thing; great how they came in with everyone laughing at them and made probably the best series of the show.

Certainly its no perfect; but its very much its own identity, whereas the rest of the show seems a bit confused and not really knowing what to do with itself.

Yeah Tennant's final line where he was basically whining that he had to generate was pretty bad, and not a great way to end the character. You're right, even a simple Allons-y would have been so much better.

Allons-y to Rose would have been good and fitted into the whole '2005 is gonna be good' too.

'I don't want to go' was far too far from RTD - I feel he overstepped things a bit here and made him/his team bigger than the show. Fortunately Moff/Smith were up to the challenge but any Doctor needing a bit more time would have struggled imo.

our local library had a Dr Who themed thing this weekend. My daughter got her photo taken with a Cyberman and a Dalek. The Dalek asked her name (which is Daisy) and started singing 'daisy, daisy' which made me laugh but my wife and kids didn't get the reference.

they also had a ton of Dr Who books and they took a few out, including a nice Dalek information book and '100 best monsters'. Which led to my daughter realising she'd missed the christmas special in 2010(?) because she didn't remember the sky sharks. So we watched that at the weekend. Not a fan of the singing, but I like the timey wimey nature of going back in time and appearing in a home video while its playing.

Another pic:

There was one on tumblr over the weekend which had a pic of the First Doctor & Susan in a very similar pose and background to the pic of Matt & Jenna but I can't access tumblr from here.

Also: Doomsday (the track, not the episode): best music of the new series?

Oh, right, now it is on.

THE BIG TOP 10 MURRAY GOLD INSTRUMENTAL TRACKS
1. The Life and Death of Amy Pond
2. This is Gallifrey: Our Childhood, Our Home
3. Four Knocks
4. Help Is On It's Way
5. Doomsday
6. Never Too Old to Shoot and Fly
7. I Am The Doctor
8. Come Along Pond
9. The Dark and Endless Dalek Night
10. The Vampires of Venice

Too many omissions. :(

No, Martha has the whole Doctor-in-training bit going for her, and saves the world by graduating and becoming a full-fledged one.

She's certainly more interesting and, you know, credible than anything offered by Amy in the latest season.

Those two episodes had the best moments in new who. Scene where he sends Rose away is, well, fantastic.

It is also maddening because RTD NAILED the ending to series 1, but somehow completely lost his ability to properly end a story after that. It didn't slowly leave him, it just seemed to abandon him completely and never come back.

Some pretty damn good choices here. I have a playlist of just variations of I Am The Doctor, a ridiculously badass tune. Particularly the Pandorica Opens and Big Bang variations (Words Win Wars!).

But much love for Gallifrey too, and Doomsday. I did a little tear in that bit when I saw it first time. And gorgeous music. I remember from the commentary them talking about how they chose the style, not wanting something too traditionally sad and wanted a bit modern to match Rose. But still heartbreaking.

(While on finales, just another vote of love for series 1).

Although I do wonder if the background in the first is photoshopped from the second.

I feel other producers got too much of a bigger say. Things like Tennants 'fall' in EoT weren't what RTD wanted. So I think he began writing for others series 2 onwards.

Such a different show though. Surprisingly so when I watch it back. And surprisingly better than I thought at the time.

RTD is still responsible for the horrible endings to series 2-4. Changes to End of Time that others supposedly wanted does not change the fact that every finale that RTD has done outside of series 1 was horrible.

She saved the world by making the world bow submissively to the doctor while her family was tortured. Come to think of it, she didn't escape that fate. Thanks for reminding me.
