Doctor Who Series Seven |OT| The Question You've Been Running From All Your Life

Like all things from NuWho season 2 onward, if it needs to be done for a story, it'll be timey wimey'd into or out of existence without much thought for overall implications

Well, it's never been said in the show, so of course it can easily be retconned away.

It doesn't make sense for Susan to ever go back to Gallifrey.

Well, there's the call to war. With the whole of your race and the whole of creation under threat and even your vagabond grandfather, who has an extremely tense relationship with the council going back, you'd go and fight.

Seems like I'm the only one who likes Vastra. She was better in A Good Man Goes To War, but the scene with the one-word answers was brilliant.

The problem is Jenny being kinda useless beyond inciting gay panic in Victorian folk.

She was used effectively in the one word test, I thought. In general, I find her fine but not great.

This. Sontarans as a whole have not been done with any justice i Nuwho. They were soo much more serious in old who

The Sontarans were ALWAYS comedic. They're short-arsed parodies of military men who die if you touch the back of their neck. Sure, they can be an effective military force (as they were in The Sontaran Stratagem/ The Poison Sky), but theyve always been a pisstake.

I thought Vastra was excellent in this. Needling the Doctor where appropriate, brilliant in the one word answer scene... honestly, all I needed to see was her slicing the shit out of some snowmen and I'd have been satisfied.

Jenny... Yeah, I hope their episodes next year give Jenny something to do.

I don't have a problem with either, rather like them actually. They're just under-utilized as all secondary companions are (that aren't named Rory or Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart that is).

I want some of these:

Finally got to watch. Yay, I can come in the thread again.

I can't have a reasoned critique on the episode until I get over Clara causing me to swoon all over the place.

I like this trio because they've made memorable characters out of the races of sontarans and Silurrians.

This is what I appreciate- making actual characters out of the races is such a progression and kmprovement. Especially for the Silurians, whose return got off on a dodgy foot.

Not *quite* what you're asking for, but in a roundabout way, the Cybermen were responsible for the extinction of the dinosaurs (Earthshock).

Interesting.

*types "who Earthshock" into web browser*

I have "who" set up as a browser keyword that goes to the given entry on tardis.wikia.com -- it's trivial to do in Opera and Firefox, possibly others

Hey, that's pretty cool!

I'm finding it interesting that all these attempts to destroy the Earth happen within a five hundred year (and usually a one hundred fifty year) window, after all these races have spent billions of years harmlessly helping us along, if inadvertently. I thought initially from your description that Earthshock would be an exception,
with the intended attack being done millions of years past, but it seems the destruction happening in the past was accidental and that the actual attack was in the future. It is outside that window I noted, though. :)
.

Why did I spoiler that? It's a thirty year old episode! Probably because I'm seriously thinking of a re-marathon to pick up the large number of episodes I missed, so I'm more sensitive about having stories ruined.

Alrighty, finally done with series one, and I very much enjoyed it all. I kind of want to let it all sink in before I can give a solid opinion and move on, but I certainly don't have regrets for jumping in. I might or might not skip ahead and watch The Snowmen before series 2, but eh.

Not the biggest Doctor Who fan (though I've seen most of the new stuff and can vaguely recall bits and pieces of Scarf-Doctor reruns on PBS), so I'm not particularly wound up in regards to how certain things in the Christmas Special call back, fit in or will eventually pay off--but I thought that was just a really successful episode. Glad to have seen it.
