Doctor Who Series Seven |OT| The Question You've Been Running From All Your Life

Man, the First Doctor had a lot of companions.

In the first sort of drafts of the show and in early episodes, The Doctor wasn't really viewed as the lead character, but instead the companion as the lead, with him as a guide.. a bit like Marty being the main character in BTTF, I guess. That's why there was such a massive companion turnover... offering different perspectives and such. Ian was the 'lead' essentially, though. That structure of the companion at the audience's eyes is still there, but the Doctor is definitely the lead now.

I think that's been less true in Moffat's run, though. At least when it comes to Amy. People have even gotten quite upset about it.

Ian was the man. Dude got inside a Dalek and drove it around like a car.

Rory has plainly been Moffat's audience surrogate, commenting on the Doctor and Amy and their oddness.

I kinda wonder if Clara will be more down to Earth, or whether she'll have a Rory analogue.

Bane? Get them on board, I'll call it in.
Not sure if this has been mentioned, but to people with BBC America, this Sunday they'll be showing the First Doctor serial "The Aztecs" at 9 PM EST (8 PM CST)

I'm working my way through the first series now, Susan and Barbara just seem to scream, maybe Susan will come up with the odd good idea. But dear god, Ian is a legend, the whole getting in the Dalek case was so awesome and stupid. He takes no crap and just does whatever it takes.

Also those stamps are awesome, do want

He popped it open like a can of Pringles, hopped in, looked at the controls for about 10 seconds and started driving around like he's on the bumper cars.

The best bit was him talking in the Dalek Voice, really funny to hear him talk casually with the Doctor and the companions with that voice.

I'm actually surprised at how much I am liking him on the show. Wasn't really expecting to get into the Hartnell era stuff as much as I have and if it was for the Bad Assness that is Ian I don't think I would be.

It's times like these I really wish the BBC weren't dumbasses in the old days.
I have a guy a work with, he is in his mid to late 50's, huge Dr Who fan much like myself, we talk about it heaps. He's been watching it since it started, he can't really remember much of the earlier stuff other then whats been released on VHS/DVD but I always envy him for having seen all these episodes I'll never get to see.

It would be great if one day they find in some vault somewhere the tapes to all the missing episodes, to be able to see the Tenth Planet in its fullness or the missing Troughton stuff would be awesome. I'd love to see his Dalek Serials or the Cybermen ones. :(

Pre-2005 they thought everything that could be found had been, but since New Who the increased exposure has meant several new things surfacing each year. All the 50th push should help too, one hopes - as a lot of the 50th celebration news and things mention that there's episodes missing. Hopefully we'll find most of it over the coming years. Fingers crossed.

People assume that a thread is a strict progression of cause to effect, but actually from a non-linear, non-subjective viewpoint it's more like a big ball of wibbly wobbly timey wimey stuff.

Second audio revealed:

Following an emergency landing, the TARDIS arrives on a remote world orbiting a peculiar star – a pulsar which exerts an enormous gravitational force, strong enough to warp time.

On further exploration the Doctor and his friends, Jamie and Zoe, discover a human outpost on the planet’s surface, inhabited by scientists who are there to study an ancient city. The city is apparently abandoned, but the scientists are at a loss to explain what happened to its sophisticated alien architects. The Doctor discovers that something dark, silent and deadly is also present on the world – and it is slowly closing in on the human intruders...

Sounds cool. Very curious to find out, come March, if they've actually got any of the living Doctors on board for the recording process of these.

Because these are part-produced by the BBC and not part of the regular Big Finish license, they're allowed to do things BF can't - the first one ties in some references to some New Who stuff, for instance, the first time any expanded universe stuff with a classic Doctor has ever done that. Exciting times!

So anyone else watching the first Doctor episodes of Doctor Who tonight on BBC America?

I the earlier Doctor I've seen is the 4th so I'm looking forward to seeing these episodes. It's pretty neat that BBC America is going to be showing old episodes all year.

Wow what's funny about that is when they released the trailer for Season 7 and he was shown from scenes from Dinosaurs on a Spaceship, people were like "OMG! THE FIRST DOCTOR!!"

I was one of them

Seeing the rest of the casting is is a reminder - a Canadian Exec, a woman producer, an Indian-born director... Christ, this show was forward-thinking for 63.

I think Waris Hussein was gay, too, just to add to the mix.

Edit: And it's probably worth adding Delia Derbyshire to the list; a female music producer making one of the first entirely electronic TV themes.

Edit: Jessica Raine as Verity? I'm a big fan of Call the Midwife, so that's good. Although I do find that Jessica Raine does tend to remind me of someone else.

He was gay, a quick check reveals! Bloody hell. This show.

What a wonderful woman Verity was. There's an amazing interview with her from the year before she died, a joint interview between her and RTD. It was done some time between Christmas 2006 (Runaway Bride) and the start of Series 3. It was amazing to see those two talk to each other (and see RTD utterly gushing). She straight-up told RTD she didn't like the casting of Eccleston and thought it was a mistake when first announced! She did go on to say she thought Tennant was a perfect choice, mind.

Neil Gaiman on how Moffat keeps spoilers from leaking:

Neil Gaiman said:
“Steven Moffat, who is the current man behind Doctor Who…the showrunner, the impressario, the God…has trained squads of Ninja Assassins. Probably there are a couple of people in this audience tonight who are plants. If I actually got to the point of saying ‘OK, I will tell you what you want to know’…something would happen. And then I would crumble. Smoking gently, probably. A mysterious black figure would exit and next be seen in Cardiff, saying ‘Mission accomplished’. Steven Moffat would go ‘Good. And he didn’t say anything?’ And the figure would say ‘No’. I tell you NOTHING.”

Yet more funky T-shirt designs!

Dark Bunny Tees said:
I have been working closely with BBC Worldwide to produce some very special designs every month throughout 2013. Dark Bunny Tees will be celebrating 50 years of Doctor Who by releasing two designs a month; one inspired by each of the Eleven Doctors and the other inspired by a classic and iconic monster. These strictly limited edition t-shirts will also come with an exclusive post card, designed by Dark Bunny Tees, with 12 to collect throughout the year.
