The Black Bars You've Been Running From All Your Life

Har! I'm actually pretty happy that some people have been specifically noting when their "spoilers" are blind speculation. At least I'll be happy until something like this happens:

SPECULATION -->
Wow, it was unexpected to see the Doctor regenerating as Strax at the end of the finalé

It was a bit weird that the one cyberman moved super fast but all the others were still slow.

It obviously neglected to upload the patch for its upgrade to the cloud. I know a lot of programmers that make that mistake.

Anyway, curious question: Somebody posted a photo on my facebook feed of (probably real spoiler) Clara that happened to have
the Sixth Doctor in the background
. Do I get to be really pissed off at them for ruining a finalé surprise, or was is just
that Sixth Doctor reference we were looking for in last week's episode and happened to miss?

edit: Also, please answer that last paragraph in as much of a not spoilery way as possible. :p

It's a spoiler...but dont get pissed off at them (your friend), get mad at BBC as it's an official released one from yesterday.

Hmm. So maybe
she suddenly remembers her lives and realizes that she's been around during various adventures of all the Doctor's regenerations, unknown to him
? I'm still in "speculate during attempted media blackout" mode, mind you.

He's obviously walking with intent, probably heading off to throttle River Song.

Just wondering is it often Dr Who gets radio adverts? Heard one today on one extra which surprised me.

You wanna know what's even more surprising?

Radio ads IN CANADA. Adding to that, promos on TV on OTHER channels. Space is usually the only place I see ads for any of their programming, but recently (as in last year), they really cranked up marketing.

I just watched The Three Doctors today on Netflix-still exposing myself to the "Classics". Some SUPER cheesy stuff, but fun. First appearance of Omega. Patrick Troughton is fucking awesome-I loved every scene he was in.

I haven't watched much classic who but for anyone who has, what do people think of "image of the fendahl"? I have it on DVD here but haven't watched it yet. (Bought it a while back but forgot all about it)

Might watch it sometime when there is nothing on TV.

uhhhhhhhhhhhhh

Valeyard incoming

That's the first thing that came into my head. It would be pretty great if the Doctor regenerated into New Actor Doctor and Matt Smith Valeyard.

Troughton is amazing. And that scene towards the end, where it's revealed how
Omega no longer has a corporeal body and is kept alive merely by his own force of will
was godly.

Check out more Troughton if they have it, especially Tomb of the Cybermen.

This also contains a favourite scene of mine. "YOU BELONG TO US"

While I'm on a roll with favourite scenes, see anything with the Doctor and the
alternate universe
Brigadier in "Inferno" (third Doctor) as well as the big reveal for Ace's backstory and the Doctor's
total dickmoding of her to gain the upper hand against the antagonist
in "The Curse of Fenric" (seventh Doctor).

Balls and tarnation! I was going to post

Hey, I'm starting to get weak. I dragged out the "
what if
" part of the last post. Luckily, I stopped there and then!

Of course, I hit reply on the post itself so the spoilered text appeared right on my screen. :|

Fortunately, I only got as far as "
Dream Lord was
" before my eyes forced themselves away and my fingers went for the close button. I could swear the word after that was "
Orange
", but that's probably my brain autoprotecting me from the actual horrible truth!

YES!

Off topic, my 5 year old daughter was browsing Netflix and chose to watch the documentary "DALEKMANIA". It's showing clips from DR WHO AND THE DALEKS which I've never seen.

Hey guys. I'd like to get intro classic who too, I have no idea how I should get around it though. Any suggestions?

If you really want to steep yourself in classic flavor, I'd start with some 3rd or 4th Doctor stuff. Maybe The Ark in Space or Spearhead in Space. You also can't go wrong with Tomb of the Cybermen (the 2nd Doctor is really good, but there's so much of it that's lost.) I'd also hit the big tentpole episodes just for fun. The Three Doctors and The Five Doctors are both light, somewhat accessible (and mercifully short) episodes. The bookends of the 4th Doctor's regenerations are pretty good (Planet of the Spiders/Robot, Logopolis/Castrovalva). There are also some good classic stories interspersed throughout, like Genesis of the Daleks, and The Caves of Androzani. Also, if you just want to lose a good day or two, there was a pretty good story arc (The Key to Time) that covered an entire season starting with The Ribos Operation.

The pace is much slower than modern TV, and the effects are all a bit shit, but it has so much charm. It's more like watching live theater. And, most of the important episodes are on Netflix.

Thanks for that, it should definitely be helpful!

I'm considering to just start with the first doctor and work my way up, including the worse episodes. Would take a looong time and the missing episodes suck, but I feel like it would be worth it.
But I suppose I could start with some of the real classics, it would certainly be easier (and more enjoyable, probably).

...And I must admit that the fourth doctor looks fucking awesome, I'm really inclined to just with him to be honest.

You won't be able to get past the horrible caveman serial which immediately follows the premiere - I couldn't.

Oh yeah, Netflix definitely isn't an option for me, it's not available here. Itunes would work though, they have classic who too, right? Or else I would have to go with the DVDs. :L

Haha, I could get past pretty much everything if I really wanted to. I've watched some of the worst shit and I still kind of enjoyed it!

On the 50th anniversary: "The BBC want it between something and Strictly Come Dancing, so I don’t know how long it’s going to be." - Jemma Redgrave.

It better not be truncated for strictly - wouldn't it make more sense for DW to follow strictly anyway? It has done well in that slot before (see the ratings for a town called mercy)

The caveman one grows on you, it's not great, but in the right mindset can be enjoyable. The DVDs have some great special features too. Pretty much every story comes with some interesting documentaries.

Yeah, those episodes aren't conceptually the best vehicle for a show that is about being able to go to all sorts of imaginative places. The set-up in the first 25 minute episode is absolutely perfect, but it just sets up a promise that the mundanity of the next 3 episodes don't deliver on. But, having said that, it is interesting to see these two pairs of people who don't know or trust each other thrown into a completely hostile environment where the modern notions of morality with which they could reason with their captors are completely unknown. And in the Doctor's response to the situation and Ian's checking of this response, we see the important trend of the Doctor slowly being humanised into the sort of hero figure he doesn't really become until a season or two later. It's also noteworthy that the emphasis is not so much on a villain to defeat, or a people to save, or a regime to bring down - they just want to get the hell out of there. The Doctor in particular starts as a very selfish figure who is interested only in self-preservation.

If I say so myself, I think that that summary makes the 3 episodes in question sound more interesting than they are.

But definitely, definitely start with the first 25 minute episode, "An Unearthly Child" - even if you're predisposed against any more Hartnell, that will show you how it all started!

The idea of Clara asking, "Doctor, do you even lift?" Is going to have me laughing all morning. I can hear it. Her voice and everything.

The title of the movie is "How to Catch a Monster," right? I could see Matt as the titular monster.

EDIT: IMDB has him credited as "Bully," so I guess not.

This is funnier than it should be. :lol I almost feel like making a gif with fake subtitles.

I'd start from the start and watch good/continuity episodes in order. What country are you in?

Belgium, a mysterious place filled with magic and an astounding lack of Doctor Who.

I remember them actually airing modern who here. I saw a Dalek episode once, didn't really pay attention to it though, but I suppose it was my first Doctor Who episode. I don't remember much about it though, only that Rose, the doctor and at least one Dalek were in it... which is pretty vague. I don't even remember if it was Eccleston or Tennant. I'm pretty sure they don't air it anymore though, but I can catch the BBC here too so it's no biggie. Shame it didn't catch on.

It was PROBABLY "Dalek," (Season 1, Episode 6) though it may have been one of the others. Rose didn't have THAT many Dalek episodes, and the others tend to have bunches and bunches of Daleks.

Just watched the Cybermen episode last night. The "Clara, when someone asks you if you want to be queen of the universe you say YES!" line cracked me up. I'm a HUGE Ghostbusters fan.

Yeah I'm pretty sure it was that one, but I remember a few details that don't add up to any episode. The mind is a funny thing, it probably filled in the blanks. Weird thing is that I feel like it was a Tennant episode, but Dalek fits the bill the most. I guess it could have been Doomsday too though...

You'd likely remember the Cybermen as well if it was Doomsday, methinks! Almost certainly Dalek. Which is still one of the best, really.

I know! But I also remember there being more than one Dalek, it's weird. But like I said, my memory is fuzzy when it comes to that episode, so I might have imaginated myself some extra Daleks to make things more exciting.
