Doctor Who Series Seven |OT| The Question You've Been Running From All Your Life

Well if one episode of Web of Fear is still missing then that one should be a good contender for an animated episode. Hoping we'll get DVD releases for them next year so I can check them out and add them to my Troughton collection.

No idea how to embed tweets on here (Someone tell me how? lol)

But I'm wondering what this means...

https://twitter.com/DWMtweets
"Just over an hour to go, folks. But some of you may be wanting to stay up even later tonight..."

Obviously we know whats coming at midnight, but whats with the hint to wanting to stay up later?
Is that the whole coming to iTunes so we can get it tonight?

That's the thinking. The idea is that they announce it, and then say "It's available NOW" - you go and you buy it, and you stay up watching classic Doctor stories.

Rich coming from Lawrence Miles, the man who during series 5 wrote 2000 words or something ridiculous a week on how Moffat is a caveman/wanker/dickhead/etc then would delete each post the next day

Maybe the BBC lost the tapes to the press conference.

That wouldn't surprise me. JNT used to order all the unused footage during the Davison / Baker era to be wiped, as he didn't want fans seeing the scenes they never used, I bet the BBC regret letting him do that now...

I'm not going to defend Miles given some of the shit he said was not only putrid but completely irrelevant to discussing the content of the show, but "I don't like the programme or the people running it at the moment" and "oh man we're getting new classic episodes but FUCK THE BBC for making me wait 'til midnight" are entirely different things so it's kind of pointless to bring that up.

Or to put it your way, this is kind of rich coming from you after how you've talked about the Gallifrey Base owners over the last day or two.

On the whole I agree with the sentiment, same for the 50th trailer whining. Like, it's a bit shit, and the dumb "no more exclusives ever if it leaks!!" threat was in poor taste in my eyes, but I don't really care about waiting for the trailer. Complaints from the fanbase about poor scheduling and splitting series as they have been are valid, though. I just think Miles is a knob, as all he seems capable of doing is sticking the knife into Moffat/RTD for 'power pats' or being old boys club or whatever. The sad thing about Miles is he wrote some great Who stories in the wilderness years and actually has good criticism when he can write it without stooping to personal digs and mental person ranting.

RE Gallifrey Base - I made one post (and one more in response to a reply), and all I said was that it was bollocks that they're so often harsh on people discussing things that on any fan forum should be fair game, like leaks about what episodes were returned. Some of the things they ban discussion of on there are utterly mental and pretty archaic, which is double the shame as all the other fan communities are shit. There's good people at GB, but some of the rules absolutely baffle me. And, yeah, I think a lot of it comes out of this battered child syndrome where they were ignored by the BBC for so many years when the show was off air and even since that they're terrified of naffing them off lest support evaporates again, which I don't think is a great attitude. Anyway, I stand by that. It is bollocks.

Finally caught up with the season and watched the The Name of Doctor, ready to say goodbye to Eleven.

I dunno about this half of series 7, it was honestly really boring. Even Niel Gaiman's episode which I was so excited for when I saw his name in the credits was just so very tame and unimaginative compared to what I expect from Gaiman.

I think I only liked three of the seven episodes, the finale, the one where they have to explore the TARDIS for Clara, and the one with the psychic (cause I'm a sucker for cute romance).

I really hope River is done as a character, it was okay seeing her as a computer program, but enough is enough.

The TARDIS being the Docs tombstone and his entire journey through time being his body are really cool concepts. Satisfied with how Clara is the Impossible girl, gotta love predestination.

The John Hurt Doctor seems like it could only go the way of a secret regeneration that was in the time war, but maybe whoever is writing the Special this November will surprise.

Bought. Probably gonna watch Enemy right now. Sod it. Late night.

EDIT: This quote from the Telegraph article is pretty amusing:

"Asked whether viewers might also see the recovered episodes, without having to pay Apple £1.89 per episode or £9.99 to download the complete stories, BBC Worldwide said licence-fee payers had already enjoyed a chance to watch the programmes in the late 60s.

It is the type of commercial deal, with the proceeds being ploughed back into licence fee funds, which the BBC will increasingly pursue under its Director General, Tony Hall."

Bet the Daily Mail will have a field day with that!

Might be too late for some people, but if you're not already familiar with "The Enemy of the World", best to steer clear of the trailer (this one) after the 1.40 mark. Pretty serious spoilers for the ending.

Those dvd covers really are beautiful. It's a shame they've changed the general design from the previous releases.

I would really like to get into old who but I watched an unearthly child and a couple of episodes of the first dales serieal and he really didn't seem like the doctor. Could anyone suggest where they think I should start?

Give Hartnell time, he grows on you. As for a good start point, outside of random 2nd Doctor stories, I'd recommend trying from Season 12. The first Tom Baker season. Pertwee is good too though.

Yeah, he takes abit to get used to, its only been rewatching them now like 10 years after I first saw them I've been able to enjoy them.

Holding out till November for the DVD release is going to be hard >.<

Any news on if they are going to animate the missing episode of Web of Fear or if its just going to be stills?

Also anything else about the possibility of other missing episodes being part of what was found?

Ten different Who fans would probably give you ten different answers, but I'd say check out something of each Doctor and see what strikes you as worth investigating further. The classic series stories move much more slowly than current TV, so there is that to bear in mind if older TV bothers you. Tom Baker's first three or four seasons are my personal favorites of all Who, but each Doctor has something worth checking out. If the Dr Who Magazine all time story ratings pre-Matt Smith are online, pick out the highest ranked stuff for each Doctor (assuming it exists) and go from there.

I wonder how long they've known about these internally. It seems kind of convenient that just as a season of Who that focuses on the GI ends and the fiftieth comes up we get Web of Fear. And wasn't Moffat recently talking about somehow dealing with the fact that Time Lords sometimes resemble real people in an interview?

City of Death.

I guess you could draw a faint character arc with the first doctor where traveling with humans softens him over time.

I recently watched The Rescue and The Romans. Both are good, The Romans is a dark comedy/historical, its quite fun to watch.

I liked The Unearthly Child. Made me realize that The Doctor is supposed to be a bit of a dick. I took to Hartnell right from the start.

so which of the following is true:

A. The BBC has no leads on other missing episodes.
B. BBC has solid leads on missing episodes, but can't announce as they're not back with the BBC yet.
C. BBC has other missing episodes in it's possession and is working on restoring for release.

Well, the Nigeria rumour was floating around as early as 14 months or so ago, and it turns out, lo and behold, that these episodes are from Nigeria... so probably a while. It makes sense to hold 'em back, especially given this is the 50th.

To the above, I'd guess B. Rumours that sat alongside the Nigera one suggested there were more episodes discovered to be in the hands of private collectors reluctant to hand them over in the case the restoration damages their collector's item. The BBC hasn't talked about that for obvious reasons, it'd upset negotiations. C just isn't realistic as I think they'd have said if more were on the way.

yeah, i agree.
On the other hand, if they do this every 3/4 months they can hype up each pair of releases for maximum exposure, rather than dump them all out at once.

Perhaps, but if they do it every 3/4 months the novelty will wear off for the mainstream. Not for the fans, though. God, I love Troughton. He's magnificent. You can see why Matt fell in love with his portrayal and chose to take so much from it; in a sense it's a shame so much of his stuff was and is still missing when Matt was researching for the role, as think of what else he could've garnered with more to work with!

I'm guessing B, based on what reliable people have said. Although I think it could be a mix of B and C.

This, just checkout a few select episodes from each Doctors run and see what you like, if you want to know more than you can go from there.

Off the top of my head best I can think of for each Doctor would be

Willaim Hartnell: The Dalek Invasion of Earth
Patrick Troughton: Tomb of the Cybermen
John Pertwee: Terror of the Autons
Tom Baker: Genesis of the Daleks
Peter Davidson: The Caves of Androzani (I've not seen this myself, but everyone seems to rave about it, I've watched Resurrection of the Daleks way too many times myself)
Colin Baker: Attack of the Cybermen
Sylvester McCoy: The Greatest Show in the Galaxy (personal bias on this one, also Happiness Partol just for him talking someone with a gun pointed at him into killing themself, Seventh be hardcore)

As for McGann, the Movie is OK, but honestly just check out some of his Big Finish Audio plays and listen to them while you're out for a walk or something. Start with Storm Warning or Chimes of Midnight and you'll be hooked.

The optimist in me wants C. to be real, I mean they must have had these episodes for a while due to the restoring process (honestly no idea how long that takes) so its within the realms of possibility they have others that they are working on but just wanted to announce these ones now for some reason.

Heck as long as its any of them barring A I'll be happy.

Yeah, hoping it's B at the very least. I'd be curious to know how many more, if any, hail from Africa and how many are in private hands, from something like the ABC shipment in 1975 (I believe) of about 100 episodes that were believed junked by the BBC aside from a handful that slipped into private hands.

Series 5 (67-68) is one of my favorite series of Who from any era, so great to see so much of it restored this year with the animated ice warriors and these episodes returned,

If I recall, Gaiman's episode was cut way down from its original state to fit the run time.
