Doctor Who Series Seven |OT| The Question You've Been Running From All Your Life

I assume he's referring to the absolutely ridiculous fucking up of the character in End of Time.

I do not find a villain threatening when he;
- Ridiculously starts saying "CHICKENCHEESECHIPSWITHGRAVYMMMM" to convey he's hungry
- Starts shaking his head from left to right as his head turns into a very poor CGI x-ray of a skull
- Honestly expects us to take the character seriously after turning everyone into a Master race; men walking around in dresses. "Me." "Me." "Me." Was getting Matrix Reloaded nightmares.
- Starts shooting lightning out of his hands like Palpatine
- Has ridiculous blonde hair with tramp clothes.

Fucking really?

RTDs greatest crime. John Simm is a great actor... shows he's a professional given he somehow agreed to do all of that, scissor sisters and all.. *cringe*

Derek Jacobi should have had more screen time as a self-aware Master, he would have been incredible.

Hello! I've been looking for a new series to get into for a few months now, and I've heard plenty of good things about Dr. Who.

I know everything under the sun from the franchise's history is on Netflix, and obviously I've been pointed to the new series (that started in 2005, right?) However, my friend said he tried jumping in to that series and didn't like it, so he watched all of Torchwood first instead... now, he can't wait to get into the mainline series.

So where should I start? Hell, should I even start with the new stuff?

Thank you my fine gentlemen

Start with Who. If you dislike the first season, skip to the second. If you dislike that, skip to five :p

Damn, is the quality of the show that inconsistent? I've been spoiled by the likes of Breaking Bad and The Shield. In fact it has been a pretty long time since I've watched a show with whole seasons that aren't very good

And ladies!!!

I started with the new Who's beginning and watched straight through because that's how I watch television. I can't stand to skip an episode.

I think they did a reasonable job of making series 5 a good starting part for new viewers so perhaps that might be a good place to start. I think the series didn't really reach its stride until series 3 so the first 2 might turn you off, but I enjoyed them so maybe not.

For convenience's sake, I'd suggest jumping in at series 5. It's a completely fresh break; new actor in the leading role, whole new supporting cast, new lineup of directors, new head writer, not much in the way of continuity.

If you like what you see, then you can move onto the rest of the 21st Century stuff.

Not really, those are just the points where a new actor comes to play the Doctor. Some people dislike certain portrayals. I personally love all of them.

It depends on who you are. I'd call 9 out of 10 Doctor Who episodes highly watchable and great television.

The rest still put other stuff to shame.

Watch it all. But that's just because my biggest TV pet peeve is when people start a show midway.

I think they did a reasonable job of making series 6 (5?) a good starting part for new viewers so perhaps that might be a good place to start. I think the series didn't really reach its stride until series 3 so the first 2 might turn you off, but I enjoyed them so maybe not.
Dammit! I actually had "Thank you my fine gentlemen and dear madams" typed out, but thought "nah no females will respond to this". I'd love to see the demographic data on GAFs gender ratio. Either way, from now on I'll try my hardest for gender inclusive language. My apologies :D

So if I enjoy the new series, then series 3 and 4 are also worth going back to?

Excellent!

David Tennant is my favorite Doctor so I would very much recommend the series that he's in.

Two females responded, hee.

Also, sorry, don't watch six and seven without seeing five though. The best jumping in the middle points are right after regenerations.

Absolutely. All series have a good variety of stuff in them, but series 4 in particular is notable for having one of my favourite cast dynamics in anything ever.

EDIT: Yeah, Who-GAF is pretty diverse. 50/50 gender split replied to you so far. :D

No worries about gender inclusiveness. I admit it's pretty hard finding other girls who are as nerdy as me offline so I was surprised when I found out what a crazy Who nut Fiction is. She's the best~

Wait, so they are on series seven now, but 5 is where I should start, correct? That's the "reboot" that occurred in 2005?

And so what's airing now is not the same show that's just on another season, it's a completely different series? Are all series tied together canonically?

If only all of GAF were like that!

My ex-gf's sister was a huge Dr. Who fan. Her whole family was incredibly nerdy, it was pretty awesome

No no. The reboot started in season one. Anything before that is before that generally referred to by the Doctor number or the name of the actor who played the Doctor in that time. If you want to start with the reboot, start on season one, episode named Rose. Season one isn't my favorite, but it's decent. If you dislike season one (it is pretty cheesy at first, it gets better, I promise) skip to the episode called A Christmas Invasion, which is the first episode of the Tenth Doctor. Season Five starts the Eleventh Doctor's era.

You are awesome too! I love having other geek girls to squee with hehe.

OK, this is complicated stuff.

Doctor Who began in 1963, and ran until 1989 originally. There were 26 seasons between those points, with a TV Special in 1996 which continued the story.

The BBC revived it in 2005, and the series then is what is commonly referred to as series 1. It shared certain themes, characters and settings with the original series, and is meant to be a continuation of the original series, while being accessible to a whole new audience, some of whom weren't even born the last time there was a series.

Series 5 was the series that aired in 2010. The previous team had been very popular, and all left in an episode that aired on New Years Day 2010. Series 5 was a fresh start, with a new leading actor playing the Doctor, new companions, a new head writer and a fresh new tone. It's absolutely meant as a continuation (in fact, the first episode begins seconds after the New Years Day episode finished) but it's absolutely 100% beginner friendly, focusing instead on building it's own tone and cast. It's the perfect place to start.

The vast majority of Doctor Who fans I know are female. I think my introducing it to most everyone I know with either Girl in the Fireplace and/or Blink helped with that, but even still I'm always running into the same female faces at conventions down here. The only guy I see consistently is always in his Tom Baker outfit - which is far inferior to mine as mine is the superior sexy burgundy version.

Hell I ran into someone from another state I met at a con 2 years ago at the same performance of "Who, me?" a few months ago.

I really hope its a trend that continues and Who doesn't end up pulling the closed off 'fighting game community' style things that the Trek and Wars fanbases ended up doing - and old Who had.

I'm not sure it's specifically Who though, the Whedon and Harry Potter fanbases seem as diverse and even more welcoming. Granted I'm outside looking in on at that as I've never consumed any Harry Potter media or seen Firefly (which has gotten me yelled at), but they seem to lack the 'not a real fan if...' that crops up among the Who fanbase over and over.

I was actually surprised at the amount of male Buffy fans here, as my corner of fandom is almost entirely females. Of course, I tend to run in the fic/vidding circles, which tend to be overwhelmingly female. Which is weird, since vidding and AMV are basically the same thing, yet AMV folks are almost always male.

Even my sister wants to try it even though she doesn't really know what it is besides "goofy british scifi".

Watch Firefly. Serenity can be skipped. But watch Firefly :)

Yeah, Who's always been an inclusive kind of a show, and characters such as Jack really, really help.

I have to give plaudits to Moffat too; after a shaky first year, he's really given us some great gay characters, like Canton and, yes, Vastra and Jenny.

...I completely made that up off the top of my head. That's a thing? D:

Yep. It's an incredibly popular thing. Very nearly getting popular enough to overtake John/Sherlock. The third most popular involves a character that hasn't even been on the show yet, Sebastian Moran/Moriarty. The only popular het pairing is Sherlock/Molly, it's almost non-existent. I was really looking forward to fic expanding on Irene's 'Make you beg twice.' comment too. Fandom, you disappoint me!

I read the crap out of John/Sherlock though, since that's basically all there is.

There’s a debate?

Actually you are right, it's more of a consensus now, hee

Edit: Now that I've embarrassed myself by by exposing my 'leading authority on fandom' side...
