Does anyone feel less interested in gaming when Nintendo goes under-powered?

....No?

Nintendo still makes fantastic games regardless of horsepower so at this point I couldn't really care less. If I want to play games with high visual fidelity I have my PC and my PS4.

It doesnt really effect me either way. I would have to get a Nintendo console for Mario and Zelda so it doesnt really matter.

I have PS, Xbox for power. And soon a gaming PC.

Nah. I grew up on Nintendo consoles but these days 99% my gaming is outside of their systems. They really haven't been that relevant to me since the Gamecube.

Don't agree with Nintendo having 'the best devs' either.

I wonder if the people who talk about Nintendo needing graphic powerhouse consoles have ever really owned a Nintendo console. They've never been powerhouses.

Maybe the younsters. From NES to SNES to N64 to GCN they were either the most powerful or at least reasonably comparable to their console competitors. PC/arcade was of course way ahead, but that was true for their competitors as well.

No. Considering the fact that Switch will be the 3rd time they've done it, I've gotten used to the idea by now. So long as the output is better than their shitty Wii U support I'm there.

Some people would like to see what Nintendo can do on a system that is up there for a change. In a world of frame rates and resolutions, I'm not sure why that's a crazy thought to understand.

I think it's just that Nintendo are evidently not interested in that themselves (simply picked this post to quote since its a nice concise point that makes sense). Nintendo would surely make that system if it's what they wanted. They seem to nail the resolution and framerate they aim for, and it's clear other things excite their designers and so on. It's not crazy and a fair point, but Imo a little misguided since they are the platform holder, they make what their teams want to work on.

Some people don't understand that power is not just about graphics.

Some gameplay mechanics are not possible without more power.
Okay, sure. But what PS4/XBO games couldn't work on previous gen systems from a mechanics standpoint outside of the obvious pick of Shadow of Mordor's Nemesis System? That's honestly the only one I can think of. It is not nearly as big of a jump as PS2/OXbox/Wii was to PS360/Wii U.

I can't think of many occasions where I've been playing a Nintendo game and I've thought to myself "This would be so much better if the console was more powerful". The Wii days were the worst for me - not for Mario but for Metroid Prime 3 - I'd have loved to play that game in HD.

Resolution was the only thing that disappointed me about the specs of the Wii and the 3DS. And the 3DS got a bit of a pass from me because I still think the 3D effect is a pretty damn cool thing.

But once they at least hit 720p starting with the Wii U I've been pretty cool on what their hardware is capable of, or at least I'm cool with what Nintendo is able to do with their hardware.

And even on the Gamecube and Wii, their games held up so well that they look fantastic running at higher resolutions on any reasonable PC.

Let me cackle a little.

Nintendo will never have enough power over me to not care about gaming because they go low. I appreciate the little effort they do for the Stan base but since I not attached, here nor there, it is what it is and I will continue to wish for the best. I've bought and had almost every Nintendo console and it hadn't affected my ability to play the games they lack and buy the games they make that I'm interested in. So no.... I truly don't...but I feel bad for those who seriously do. Its very limiting and sad.

As someone who has grown up with Nintendo games, I feel I need to spend more time with a different hobby when I hear of Nintendo going for much less than hardcore consoles and games. I just want the days of SNES and N64 when Nintendo gave us among cutting edge games.

I will still play games but it's just so disappointing not having the best devs working for the hardcore gamers. Such a waste of talent.

NOPE

After the annoying Gamecube era of 3rd party ignoring, I just decided to get in bed with the other manufacturers (and thus other game developers) and I immediately realized how much of gaming i was missing. I missed the whole startup of online console gaming because of that. Then i got a PC and REALLY felt stupid. They still have great 1st-party development efforts. But their interests no longer align with me as a gamer.

I feel sorry for people who are still deeply loyal to Nintendo. They purposefully isolate themselves from the rest of the development world and claim they're doing it for gamer's benefits. And they might be, but it doesn't do much for me. It just ensures i'm going to get the bottom of the barrel in terms of 3rd party support.

No because I play videogames, not clock frequencies.

There will always be more powerful hardware, every platform will be considered underpowered soon, so worrying about that seems like a waste, especially when most devs do little, if anything, more with the "extra" power than shinier graphics.

I don't think they were ever the most powerful. True they didn't have the disparity the Wii or WiiU had to the competitors, but they definitely weren't selling because of their hardware.

Nah. I'm just less interested in Nintendo.

It just seems like they like to kick people in the nuts.

I don't remember anyone complaining about how MK8 and Mario 3D World looked. Ninty games always have and will continue to look great, forget about the sensational articles.

This post seems weirdly self righteous in a way I don't really understand

Like if people just want to buy Nintendo systems then whatever

I own a PS4, a PC, and a Wii U and I've never thought "man those people who own only a Wii U sure are pathetic"

Do you not care about framerate?..... Or AA?

I sure do. Just lower the graphical settings to maintain a stable frame rate if need be. I primarily play on ps but I really don't care about graphics. Gameplay is always king for me by a huge margin. I honestly think too many ppl get caught up in power, graphics, aa, etc way too much and get obsessed with it.

Power don't mean shit, as long as the games are good. The DS and 3DS weren't the most powerful but they had fantastic games and despite the problems, Wii U had some awesome exclusive games too, some of the best games this gen in fact.

I buy Nintendo consoles for the amazing games, not the hardware.

The Switch is by far the most powerful handheld console yet, a solid generation above the Vita. And it's a more powerful home console than the Wii U. So I'm all good!

You play Nintendo consoles for Nintendo games not to have some powerhouse.

I wanted a nice looking Metroid Prime though.

You are getting a portable that has better graphics than the WiiU.... just think about it.. the 3DS is only a bit above the N64. If anything this is an incredible portable.

...No? As long as the games are good, I good. I'm not opposed to the option of more power if they can manage it either.

NES was more powerful than the Master System, and SNES was more powerful than Genesis in some ways--many third party games ran better there. GCN wasn't as powerful as Xbox, but was more powerful than PS2.

Far different than Wii, Wii U or Switch. And few are arguing that Nintendo should beat PS4 or even X1 in power. Just have something more comparable, at least for the western market where a huge portion of core gamers don't care about portability and just game on their big screens.

Well it uh, makes me feel less interested in Nintendo. But not so much gaming as a whole, no.

Really don't see why it would. It's like asking me if I feel less interested in naked ladies now that playboy ain't showing them no more. Like bish, do you know how many other ways there is for me to see naked ladies these days?!

Despite being underpowered they still make games which I think look great visually, so no. Graphical power doesn't guarantee a good-looking game, and a lack of power does not guarantee a bad-looking game.

And, y'know, there's a lot more to games than just the visuals.

I don't think Super Mario 3D World would have been any better on a PS4-level system so...no.

Yeah, or Tropical Freeze or Mario Kart 8 or Splatoon or Mario Maker. The only thing I would love to see in the highest level of possible graphic prowess is the likes of Metroid and Zelda.

Ive played, completed and loved SM3DW. But please, the same game with much better graphics would be even better.

But it wouldn't be any more fun. I wouldn't say no to better graphics, but I'm not going to lose any sleep if the Switch isn't "cutting edge"

I feel the same. The SNES, N64 and GCN generations were good for me because Nintendo had genuinely competitive hardware and we were getting games like Mario 64, Turok, Golden Eye, Resident Evil 4 and Metroid Prime. Those were all games which pushed back the bounds of technology at the time they were released. I lost interest in gaming during the Wii generation and all the waggle nonsense. And I haven't enjoyed gaming as much since. Nintendo games would look so much better with the best technology especially Zelda.

All I care about is if a game is fun or not. Hardware is secondary. Knowing the system you're on has high stats isn't exactly much of a consolation if you have a shitty game in front of you.

Follow games. Not hardware. If a game you want is on a console then thats the console for you stats be damned.

Nope. I'll still fire up Melee and Double Dash. Graphics haven't aged well, but the games're as just as fun to play as they were in 2004

I don't care about the specs for the most part but I do care about the pricing which Nintendo usually charges a premium for.

A. The industry is larger than Nintendo

B. No. I'm less interested in gaming when people freak out about specs that nobody outside of a select few enthusiasts have any idea of. Shit, I'd be fine if hardware progress stalled for half a decade. I don't think the graphics arms race is good for diversity with regard to game choice and I think it leaves indie games in a shitty situation.

I wanted better, mainly because I think it would help the install base, which in turn helps the 3rd-party library

I mean, I'm mainly hoping to play more Atlus and DQ games on it, so it isn't like I need the power

But I was going to buy it no matter what. They don't need to appeal to people like me. They need to appeal to the people who skipped Wii U.... and to the people who may or may not want another device to carry around.

I'd like N to enjoy some success beyond the "sure things" they have these days, that's all

EDIT: but no, it definitely doesn't discourage me personally. I'm sure I'll have a lot of fun with it

I'm treating the switch mostly as a portable, so to me, this is a huge step up. I'll miss the dual screens though, especially for games like Monster Hunter, Pokemon, etc.

Consoles are generally far behind PC so that's not a relevant consideration for me. I put far more weight behind quality of exclusives and gameplay than visual potential.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯
