Doom: The Dark Ages is a flop

It's not DOOM. Same with Eternal, and also 2016. It's Quake with the DOOM name.

Crazy how even DOOM 3 feels more like actual DOOM than the recent trilogy.

30+ years of community wads for original DOOM that are more fun than anything official.

What exactly would you say is DOOM? Because almost every game has brought something new to the table. So a different spin or new mechanics is very Doom like if you ask me.

Doom 2016 is a great modernisation of the Original game.

Game Pass effect.

You do realize the game launched months ago, a singleplayer shooter, not an online game, right?

Even more of a retarded post. Do you go and say Far Cry 5 isnt Far Cry because its not like the first? Do you go and say God of War 2018 is not God of War because it's not like the original trilogy?

People who say that this is like Quake have not played Quake. Quake 1 runs circles around this game in every aspect except visuals (and even that can be argued).

Comparing DOOM: Simon Says to Quake of all things, that dude should be ashamed.

lol give it up defense force, its bomba of highest order.
has less ccu than both of its decades old prequels.

the idiots finally managed to kill doom with their "experiments". there won't be another.

they'll probably ruin quake next

Seems like a lot people liked it and said it was fun. 🤷‍♂️
I'll try it whenever the price is low enough as doom was never my thing but do we need constant shitting on decent games?

I have it too lol, every day I turn my PC ON I see Microsoft begging me to try Doom TDA.

That's literally 9 out of 10 of your daily posts mate.

Im late to the party on this one, but the game just didnt strike me as a must play.

Honestly... If they had made it a quake game it probably would have done great.

I personally felt a bit of franchise fatigue and it just looked like more of the same, even if it was different technically

I enjoyed the game but I'd rate it below Eternal and 2016 personally. I did actually enjoy the melee/parry "stand and fight" mechanics. The whole thing had a Masters of the Universe vibe which was awesome.

One thing that I thought was a little lame, it seemed like they were trying sooooo hard to make Thira into a thing. Wouldn't be surprised if they wanted to make a spinoff or DLC starring her.

I'm about halfway through it right now, and it's definitely fine. I'd even say it's good, in fact. I'm enjoying it way more than Eternal, but it just doesn't have that same feeling 2016 had--but that's ok. It's a good game and worth playing if you're into FPSes, but something does feel a little off about it... It almost feels a bit hollow, and it takes itself a bit too seriously (like Eternal did as well).

These games don't really need any kind of elaborate story or narrative, it's just about it blowing shit up and killing demons. If they can figure that out again, I think the next one could be a banger. There's a lot of good here to build upon.

too bad I really like it

It is not classic Doom - but an amazing game

I would really like them to do an actual sequel to Doom 1 and 2 in modern ID Tech

- Lots of different levels with a more classic premise. No set pieces only enemies, puzzles, keys, bosses
- No leveling and skills.
- Minimal platforming
- Classic weapons + new
- No story
- Great music
- Full coop support
- Level editor/moddable included

They really should have made a Quake reboot instead of this, and come back with Doom on nextgen because this one ended up looking worse than 2016 and Eternal (on console at least). They went all in on the unnecessary ray-tracing which added nothing and this and their other crazy decisions (gamepass, empty disc, crazy price) effectively killed the franchise.

Here we go again with DS2. Both are flops.

One stayed in the top 20 selling charts of the year for almost half a year.

The other didn't even make it into the top 20 despite being one of the most heavily advertised games of the year.

But yes, let's try to make them seem the same.

Really didn't like this game. Probably my biggest disappointment of 2025.
I know what you mean. I didn't like it too.

Loved Doom 2016 and Eternal was alright, probably not as good as Doom 2026 but not bad. But I played the opening level of this and didn't feel it. Just as well it was on GamePass.

While I agree on the Quake reboot part - calling Doom a dead franchise seems a little extreme. Game was still pretty well received and managed to break in to the top 20 for the year for a decent amount of time. It might be time for a pause to work on a different IP but I would imagine they still consider Doom viable.

if Doom is a flop then what is Death Stranding 2 which never even made an appearance in the top 20?
Flop is used as a catch-all term these days. I've seen people say AC Shadows was a flop but I take that to mean it didn't perform well relative to how it should. I think Doom falls into that category as well.

Death Stranding 2 is a genuine flop though. Like dropping a large stone in a lake and seeing it sink immediately.

A single player shooter you say? Let's have a look and see what others single player shooters are doing

Its strange that so few are playing a more recent title when apparently it being "months" old is an issue.

Ghost of Yotei released on a single platform and managed to crack the top 20 in a short amount of time.

Not a good excuse.

But alas, no, let's stop trying to make them seem cause Death Stranding 2 is clearly the biggest AAA bomb of the year.

🤷‍♂️

You gotta wonder if we've all been too hard on Konami for trying to reign Kojima in during the MGS 4/5 days. Flying out all those hollywood types to Japan etc couldn't have been cheap for Sony to finance with nothing to show in return.

As much as Im loving the Outer Worlds 2, I have a feeling it might actually be bigger. Will know for sure on full release day.

I think it's gonna do fine. Probably was made on a much smaller budget comparatively, too. Not that we know the figures for either TOW2 or DS2.

Probably. What did they really get out of having Kiefer as Big Boss when fans would have been happy with Hayter? They paid a ton more for Kojima's ego and that's it.

Loved Doom 2016 and Doom Eternal and no amount of praise for Dark Ages will change my mind that this game is the "jumping the shark" moment for the series.

To me, this game just simply didn't need to exist and id should've been assigned to make something else all together.

Terrible logic. Firstly TDA is still a new and expensive title. Those games can be found at under 5 bucks. Wanna bet TDA once it gets in the 50% sales will see an increase?

IMO Doom got way too far up its own ass with story and lore. I know some people love Eternal, but that was the game that crossed that line, and continued into The Dark Ages. This is something 2016 understood when the opening tried to give you exposition and Doomguy grabbed the monitor and threw it across the room.

Doomguy doesn't need an elaborate backstory about him. He's just some fucking marine who's too pissed to die and that's what made him cool. From the demon's perspective, one day this random guy just showed up and started killing all of them, and no matter what they threw at him they couldn't stop him. Nobody knows what or who he is. He was like a plague. That's all we needed.

Yeah it's amazing how they managed to bring in the worst aspect of Eternal while also forgetting all the stuff that made that game so amazing and fun to play.

I sure hope their next game is better, would be real sad to witnesa id Software going down the shitter.

Like I say, even if it's technically different, it still just looked like more of the same.

Eternal was riding high as a sequel to a surprise game no one expected to be so great in Doom 2016.

TDA just wasn't an exciting prospect in 2025.

I played like 4 levels of the dark ages. And nearly every area felt like just some open space with no cover or obstacles while you just straff and parry. Every encounter felt the same.

Just doesn't feel as good as eternal.

Its a decent game. Seemed to do fairly well, with everyone but the eternal crowd.

I found it to be very disappointing. The colors and HDR was washed out by design, the shield slowed the combat down, not very interesting.

TDA already had a 33% off sale which bumped its players to 1.3k for that weekend.

Eternals first sale was 25% off a few months after launch and was at 7.6k players for that weekend. Im sorry but thats the reality, its the worst in the modern triology, and the player numbers reflect that.
