I'm not sure if many people will like the comparison, but a lot of the game I find comparable to 5-man dungeons in WoW, and I've just been using the general tank n' spank strategy.
Nothing wrong with that comparison, just so long as you understand that those strategies and mechanics weren't first developed in WoW.

Those Blood Mages sure keep a clean great hall.

Thank you for bringing up bad memories. I hated that place.

Looks as if he took a 2560x1600 screenshot and reduced the resolution in photoshop. That tends to make games appear better than they do in real life.

Yeah, I don't even have the option for that high of a resolution.

Yes it is a 1600p shot downsized to 1050p in Photoshop but actually my original 11.7 MB .bmp 1600p screenshot looks better than the .jpg I posted. The orginal looks even better (more crisp) and it looks that way when I play too.

It may be hard to see how good DAO can look when you just play normally, but when I take screenshots I pause the game and try to find a good angle and zoom level.

EDIT: Below is the original . bmp at 1469p to get it down to 10 MB that is my imagehost limit.

I think being neutral is the greatest thing to do in an RPG, so now I have to ask... are there any other good console "western" RPGs where you can be neutral? I always play the good type... can't bring myself to do the evil type :/ but I would like more play with neutral because it is a lot of fun!
Not a console game (not anymore) but The Witcher, outside being a phenomenal game on its own rights, also puts the concept of neutrality (and the struggle to remain neutral) front and center.
In fact (not really spoiler, but I don't know, some people are super sensitive about such things)
there really isn't a good or bad ending, and the neutral ending is generally considered the "best" ending.
FFS, the DLC is called "The Price of Neutrality".

Any tips for romancing Morrigan? I really like her character more than Lelina but she can really be a cold bitch sometimes.

Be an asshole in general, and do her personal quest.

Yeah, my laptop went kaput and my PC will never run the Witcher which only once again makes me bummed that the console port is canceled :(

I've wanted to play that game for a long time now :/

How do you get her personal quest?

Also is there a handy source somewhere for specialisation trainers?

I managed to unlock all specializations in the game really early in the game and here is the method I used

1- Make Morrigan hate you EARLY in the game, get her to teach shapeshifter, bring her back up quickly with Jewelery and etc.

2- In making choices to have Morrigan hate you Alistair and Leliana will both be good enough so you will learn Templar and Bard respectively

3- Ranger can be purchased in your camp

4- Assassin is easy, Zevran wants to do things to you so a few talks and hit on him and he will teach you

5- Blood Mage = playing a mage. Go into the fade to rescue Arl Eamon's son and make a deal to get it. Most powerful mage spec

6- Reaver you must destroy the ashes, don't have Leliana in your party (or Wynne, I did it before I got her) or you will lose them.

7- Duelist you have to play a card game in a bar in Denerim (The Pearl I believe). Having Leliana in your party makes it easy to cheat.

8- You can purchase Spirit Healer while in Denerim, I didn't wait to find Wynne (Also purchase Berserker)

9- While doing Brecelia (sp?) forest (The Dalish quest) get your hands on Arcane Wizard if you explore (Note: It involves a gem)

10- Champion you get from Arl Eamon if you accept his reward

That is how to get all the specializations the fast way, I had every single one unlocked WITHOUT using a walkthrough (literally just how I played the game and how things worked out) before I had even finished my 2nd part to the main quest.

Just finished my first playthrough clocking in at 51 hrs and god dam that was fucking fun. The combat was just so much better then Mass Effect for me, I really started to enjoy it around level 12. Will definitely be playing this again in the future.

I hit it off with Morrigan right away and I didn't feel like I was being an asshole at all! :D I was just trying to be like a grey warden who witnessed ostagar and had to go about doing important stuff.

having trouble with Shale though. the gifts the wiki says it likes don't work, they're all just +1 which sucks.

Oh well, DAO question then:
so what exactly were Loghain's reasons for abandoning Cailan at Ostagar? Was it just lust for power? It doesn't seem like it since he was intially urging Cailan to stay away from the battle, and even further it if you recruit Loghain in his "fluff" dialogue but I'm still unsure

He disliked the presence of foreign troops (some of the Wardens) and thought that Cailin was a fool for relying on them. He thinks that Cailin is brash and reckless, more concerned with legends than military strategy, and decides to abandon him to his fate. He believes himself the only person fit to guard his country.

The company they had making the console port I guess were a bunch of idiots or something and did some serious *censor*ups or something.

I remember reading about it and being completely crushed because I like playing games on a console more than a PC. PC gamers have the nice graphical edge and some great games but I just never actually PLAY PC gaming because I end up sitting down, loading up GAF or facebook, making plans, and not playing a PC game so I don't even try.

He and Meric - Howe and Cousland (Human Noble's daddy) too, I think - all fought the Orlesians and eventually drove them out off Ferelden. I still think he's a paranoid, backstabbing son of a bitch, but it's a believable motivation, gotta give him that...

Don't worry. Get the game cheap on Steam now.

Then play the sequel on consoles, which though no confirmed is almost a sure thing from some of the behavior shown lately.

Umm.. they actually said its coming on consoles I thought? Like, even after #1 got canceled.

Edit: After having my curiosity piqued I went and looked into their own site and checked their forums and etc.

It sounds like Witcher 1 console isn't even canceled, they are going to be putting it on their own engine for consoles much like #2 is going to have for a console version.

I can understand #2 PC is top priority though, the one company failing at the port of #1 surely set them back financially, but I wouldn't doubt #1 and #2 hitting consoles is still highly possible.

Edit 2: Just found an interview, #2 is being done on a multiplatform engine (console release yes?) and when its finished they are going to put #1 out with that engine.

You can read it here

So if you are enjoying Dragon Age you'll still get to try this one it seems :) (although a custom engine for #2 and the console version of #1 makes me wonder how big a change it'll be.

I liked it more than Mass Effect simply because it was more meaty. My first play through of Mass Effect only took me 13 hours. Dragon Age took me 40 hours, which made it much more epic feeling. To be honest though, I'd like it to fall somewhere in between, around 25-30 hours. I felt Dragon Age started to drag a bit by the end.

Man, you must have really blown through Mass Effect. I know it's not a long game by RPG standards (though that's one of the reasons I love it), but I'm not sure I even got off the Citadel by that point on my first run. :lol

What the hell? I just finished Nature of the Beast and I killed
Zathrian
but it still said I sided with the Elves for the achievment. Was it possible I could have had
the werewolves aid me against the darkspawn instead of the elves?

The best option to resolve that
ends in his death as well
and you still get their support.
And yes, the weres are the alternative, but you'd have to persuade the lady into attacking the Elves.

Thats what I was trying to do and suddenlt he started attacking me, so I was like "Oh ok, cool I'll have the
wolves
at my side. But then when
the curse was cured
I thought that was how it always ended, until I saw the achievment and it said
"Sided with the Elves

Oh well, guess it's too late now :( I'll just have to do it differently on my next playthrough.

1. Make arcane warrior
2. Pump dex and magic (A little unorthodox, but I've had success with this build)
3. Keep all sustainables up at all times.
4. Never ever get hit by any attack ever.
5. Learn blood magic, generate threat.
6. Profit

Welp, you cured the curse, so obviously there are
no more werewolves
to fight with you, right? Only elves are left.

Yeah, but i didn't know I was curing the curse. I guess maybe I wasn't paying attention to some of the dialog or something because it seemed to me like the wolves wanted me to kill him, I did and then he sacrificed himself to cure the curse. It didn't make a lot of sense. Did I miss somewhere where he said he wanted to cure the curse?

For the wolves to follow, you need to convince Witherfang. The wolves themselves want only revenge at the slightest hint of there being no hope to lift the curse and
Zathrian
just wants to see them suffer. You can convince Witherfang (and in doing so the Wolves), but
Zanthrian
will only see 'reason' after some further convincing, which you did. (I actually thought you killed him for good, which is also possible, in more than one way.) I think he says he's tired and just wants it to end after you beat him. Quite melodramatic, but there you go. I thought it was a well set up situation, and I definitely didn't see it coming the first time I played. Understandable motives, all around, safe for maybe Witherfang. I guess spirits don't like to be shackled to the material world or something? Or maybe I missed something as well.

About 10 hours in or so, I think. Really enjoying the game overall so far, but this section in The Fade seems to be going on forever. It seemed like a cool little diversion at first, but now it's reached the point where it's almost as long as some entire games. I'm tired of playing solo, I want my team back. :(

On the bright side, doing quake with the elemental form, and then switching to Burning Man and dropping a fireball on yourself never gets old.

You think thats bad? :lol Wait until you see the underworld, THAT is a long quest.

And yes, the game is very long... I am at about 30 hours fighting the end boss as we speak (and getting my ass HANDED to me over and over again :/) but by the end I stopped doing sidequests.

What bums me out though is I didn't get the traveler achievement and I don't even know where is left that I haven't gone to...

It was a long section for sure. But after understanding what I had to do it was pretty awesome. Playing solo and switching between the different forms was a lot of fun.

It doesn't bother me so much that it's long. It bothers me that it's both long and (almost) completely solo. I really enjoy the group combat in the game, and playing with just one guy for hours on end is really getting old.

Hours on end? I had it done in just over an hour o_O

That was with hunting all the permanent attribute bonuses also!

Party combat is a lot of fun though, specially formulated tactics to create a team of unstoppable warriors etc.

But the Fade is actually a short quest if you want to rush it, I could probably pull it off in 30 minutes if I rushed since its only a small part of the Circle quest (then again I figured out the 'puzzle' of it really fast which may have helped)

Maybe it just seems longer since I'm not enjoying it. I don't know. I play pretty meticulously which I'm sure extends the timeframe.

Well, I'm about 12 hours in as well, guess I'll post some impressions thus far.

+The combat is loads of fun, sure for most encounters you just hit the same sequence of buttons but half the fun of combat is done outside of the battles with the Tactics. And then there is the occasional encounter or boss where you're tactics just won't work, and you'll have to think on the fly which creates a bit of an adrenaline rush when you have to quickly think up a new strategy or it could easily mean a wipe for your party.

+The dialog offers a wide variety of choices, sure it isn't voiced like Mass Effect, but it doesn't feel like it needed the voices in the first place.

+Away with the good and evil choice systems of RPGs prior, DA's party approval system is much much better. This allows most choices to be morally gray, where no one is 100% right or wrong.

-Character customization is a bit complex. I think the game should have made it easier to see which skills were more suited for Tanking, DPS, etc.

-I wish the Codex was voiced like in Mass Effect

Wow!

Was just reading through some of the posts... This seems like it's going to be intense. I might as well wait till 2morrow to play after I have had some rest.:D

Welp, I picked this up today for 360
(Which is probably my biggest mistake, but alas I doubt my laptop could handle the *real* version all that well)
and am about 4 hours or so into it; I just got Morrigon on my team.

So far, I like it, but there's a lot to it that's dissapointing (having just gotten off the magical high that is Mass Effect). But I'm thinking it just has to do with the fact that I have the 360 version -- with the exception that your main character is not voiced. The battles, so far, are almost mindless. I just walk in, hit my sustainables, and occasionally -- so far, almost never -- hit the "quick heal" button. It's not so much that I'm asking for more difficulty as I am slightly more interesting combat. I know that using the "Tactics" must be a big deal except that it isn't (so far). Everyone seems to do just fine :\

I don't know. I'm probably just choking on my own vomit here since I knew before-hand that the console versions were dumbed-down and slightly easier, but so far I feel pretty dissapointed (even though I DO feel compelled to like it thanks to what it does well so far). Really hoping it gets great within the next 6 hours for me, 'cuz otherwise I may just end up closing the door on this one :(

Alright... just finished the game / watched the end / etc.

I'd overall rate the game a 8/10. (note: I would rate my favorite game in the world a 7 so don't go apeshit)

It is by far the best western style role playing game I have ever played, the characters are well crafted and the story is amazing. The biggest problem is at times it feels like it drags on a little bit too much.

I love the fact that it has the option to have a grey area, something I hope other games will follow suit with. I also love the fact that I pulled off 3 relationships at once (achievement whore I am turning into :( ) yet in the end there were consequences for that.

I'd love to see a sequel but I do hope Mass Effect is a little bit shorter because that was one long game :lol

Edit:

You're literally at the beginning of the game still, if they had the difficulty jacked up too much right now people wouldn't ever play it. Unless you are on casual I assure you you are going to be dying a lot.
