BioWare Veteran Calls Out People Celebrating Layoffs After Dragon Age: The Veilguard Backlash

Yep, they were hoping and praying and starting online campaigns for the original Kingdom Come Deliverance, as well as Hogwarts, etc., coordinating with their media friends to blacklist and not even do previews or reviews of the games. Hoping they would fail.

Yup, you know that if they had the power to snap their finger and put Avalanche Software out of business, most of these people would've done it and gloated over their victory. They did everything they could to sabotage Hogwarts Legacy.

They're not empathetic over people losing their jobs, they're just playing the victim because their side lost.

How many have you do pushups when you misgender someone?
That was "a bit much", granted, but that didn't ruin the game for me. I could have just shrugged it off. It's the game itself. It just isn't good. I'm not in the habit of quoting myself, you can find my full opinion of the game in the OT.

Accountability, you don't deliver you get fired. There are way too many professional positions where this doesn't apply for some reason.

When a group of people want to use a beloved franchise to shove their political agendas and modern social issues down everyones throat, then insult those who aren't happy with it, then in return they get let go. I can totally understand why people would celebrate their departure.

Fuck these people. They've spent a decade shitting on gamers, injecting their politics into everything, and now that they are eating shit professionally they want people to feel bad. I'll never feel bad.

These people will tell you half the population needs to be murdered. These people gladly cancelled people who didn't agree with them for years. These people literally hate everything about gamers, and everything from their slack messages to their tweets, etc. have been nothing but outright hostile. They literally reveled in this mess for a decade when they had the upper hand, and now that sanity is gaining traction again they want sympathy. And don't tell me it was just individuals and not the companies. Employees only say and act the way they act if their bosses think the same way. If there was any shot the leadership and employees didn't agree they wouldn't be vocalizing this stuff.

Some can argue that it entirely does in a way. Since hiring practices of "talent" were dependent on that cult-like indoctrination and dollars for years in all these companies, and these are the shit results we get with slacktivists.
Absolutely - this is how you end up with one companion who talks about nothing but raising pets, or another who goes on about fan fiction, and another who just likes coffee - all while any remotely controversial or challenging element from the series was nuked, including slavery, religion etc - these talentless hacks had no business writing a fantasy game. Wokeness is not just the horrible non-binary stuff - it was infused throughout the entire game. And that's not hyperbole.

I played the game, enjoyed it, it was one of the better titles to come out in 2024.
The "woke" stuff did not bother me, I understand how some people dislike it, but it should be more like not liking fetch quests, not "OMG my life is over because of trans messaging". We are not children who've had their favorite toy taken away or forced to eat brussel sprouts.
It's OK, the general state of the world is this way, people just aggressive about simple things that are easy to digest, instead of understanding nuance and not always looking at the worst in everything.
Outrage and entitlement feels better than empathy and understanding. We get it.
Agreed, video games stories has never been affecting personal growth unless you are not educated like Asmongold, then your source of knowledge is meta, x, Google.

They don't care if you lose job as long as it helps push their ideology. The woketards are often the most disingenuous hypocrites.

Like most things, it's more nuanced. But you ever notice these people don't acknowledge the devs/journos who intentionally antagonize the audience and then play victim when the pendulum swings back at their heads?

Aren't these the same folks who get on social media, daily and call everyone bigots, racists, phobes of every flavor? Moron.

Edit: Also saying we are literally killing women and children with good looking Tits and Ass in video games?

As roach daddy points out, this dude wants to have his cake and eat it by encouraging us to voice our opinions, while he simultaneously makes up excuses as to why no one can be blamed for these games failing.

Yeah, we'll never know why the writing in Veilguard was shit. The horribly forced woke crap could have come from any number of places totally unrelated to the blue haired non binary lead writer and the "queerosexual gendermancer" director.

That said. Yeah, I think people should limit themselves to criticizing the products and the people behind them on "public" social media spaces. The ones who start sending insults and threats to the devs directly over DMs and stuff like that are pathetic.

Lets put it this way, game making business is very competetive and those unproductive woke devs are main reason for western game budgets skyrocketing and as a consequence many games flopping/underperforming.

If i have to feel bad for any1, i will feel bad for actual kids, current and from the past, who were forced to labour, not for grown ass men and women with their cushy office jobs:

So these people that attempt to lecture everyone and put time and energy in to thinking how best they can antagonise their customers through their games instead of simply putting everything they have in to attempting to entertain us now deserve our sympathy? Do they not realise that they created this situation, and nobody else?

Yeh, no, fuck off. Don't build a hornets nest, poke it, and then cry when the swarm decides to sting you.

All of the whitewash ignores a crucial part - conséquence. You are hired to do a job, you have failed at your job, why shouldn't people cheer that you are out and (hopefully) you will be replaced by someone more capable that will deliver the product your customers want?
Imagine the following situation: a tennis player has a coach, they are clearly struggling. People link their performance to the behavior of their coach. Coach gets fired, new one appointed, people are up in arms sin support of the old coach?

I pressed play on the video and the soy energy was immediately off the charts and I just gave up because I know exactly what he's gonna say.

Activist devs don't care about what gamers want and instead use games as a means to push a political agenda. Activist devs also openly say they hate gamers but somehow we should be sad when they lose their job, the one that they're not even good at? Now I'm not down with harassment and threats but I will rejoice when activist devs get the boot.

It's the same old bullshit, they always try to deflect by crying over the minority of critical nut jobs that go well beyond reasonable behaviour. Their real intention is to make normal critical people guilty by association.

If they want to make a game like this fine but they need to accept the reality of what market exists for them.

I'll kick your ass in an open debate but there is no fucking way I'm direct messaging anyone on the Internet I don't know to send them fucking hate mails. That is some crazy ass shit. Seek help.

That said, also screw woke games and the devs that made them. You aren't fooling me. All this woke shit sucks and you do not get to create it with a chuckle then sneak away without any consequence. We will not give you any more money and we will shit on your studio and your publisher on the Internet all day long and night too.

Get the devs to come out publicly on our side and they can get a free pass. That won't happen though because we know most of them simply do not agree with us. That is fine but we don't have to buy or like or be quiet about their games. Most devs have little problem coming out for the other side(the bad guys) so maybe hire better devs? I promise you this, your chud devs will be your tentpole employees and carry your game.

For anyone who hasnt watched the video, up to you if you want to watch it.

But in the first 20 second bit, you'll immediately see a guy who looks 60 years old acting weird. And you'll think to yourself..... Yup, that's the typical video game industry manchild.

Imagine being at work and seeing this guy at the front of a big board room lecturing people at a podium.

"I'm not saying you're not allowed to be angry about it, I'm not saying you don't get to express your dissatisfaction with the content of the game that you're not enjoying" he starts. "But when you climb into someone's personal social media and start actively attacking that person, when you celebrate layoffs at a studio because the game that you don't like didn't do that well, you're crossing a line into being cruel and fundamentally you should have more grace for other human beings."

I agree. People take this stuff too far.
I would feel sorry for some of these people if they didn't wish death on those who had a different political views than them and call people racist. I wonder if they thought it was cruel when they attacked and canceled people on social media during gamergate? Or when people like Colin Moriarty make a joke about women and almost have their lives destroyed in the process.

In all honest, fuck these people because if the shoe was on the other foot, they would rub it in your face.

My god these people are delusional. It's like they've never had a real job in their lives.

Just imagine if you went to work one day and they told you "your old boss Matt resigned so that a black person could replace him, isn't that wonderful?!?!" What a great way to destroy team morale and immediately call the new guy's qualifications into question.

Although I'm sure they didn't actually think this through, just some hollow virtue signaling from some brainwashed keyboard warrior.

Exactly - it infuriates me when people pretend like the only thing woke about this turd of a game was Taash telling her mother she has no gender.

Yeah, it works both ways. Shitty gamers, shitty devs.......shitty people on either side. Thankfully the loud ones are usually in the minority.

Btw,

This Mark Darrah guy just hit the jackpot. Like a lot of gaming employees, people are giving him attention. His YT page has practically all his videos getting 1,000 to 2,000 views. This video has 14,000.

He even puts some of this his videos behind a paywall for $3/mth if youre itching for his special videos that come out once a week. lol

Yup - gender and race nonsense is a big part of wokeness - but it's just one part. Most woke art has problems way beyond that. If you fundamentally view culture and history through a woke lens, you're not going to create something that has any real truth, depth or resonance.

Pretty much the bullies finally getting punched back in the nose syndrome.

100% agreed.
Celebrating people losing their jobs looks bad. I understand where it might be coming from and why some DA fans might be angry with the direction of the new game, after 10 years of waiting, but celebrating the firings is a bit cheap.

About who to blame for some choices though, i believe sometimes it can be pretty obvious.
When the writer is openly a trans woman with daily gender related posts online and you get a game like DA, you don't really need to start guessing what went wrong.

I haven't personally seen people attack random developers who happen to work at some studio that made garbage. Usually they attack the game directors or executives. Do people go after random developers?

The problem is that the people these videos are pointed at are not watching them. No one here is going to celebrate assholes threatening people on social media or sending DMs. So it becomes a virtue signaling exercise.

It's like making a 15min video asking supporters not to send racist threats to players after a game. Those people are not watching those PSAs and reflecting.

Assholes exist. And yes unfortunately there's nothing you can do. So just ignore them and crack on with life.

Funy how (some) devs dont want the customers to be mean. They have for years shitted on gamers, not only the devs, but had a coalition with the journos to shit on gamers. Wasn't the God of war director couple months back taking a huge dump on gamers with the aid of the Mercante chick???????
Now they want gamers to be docile and not hurt THEIR feelings??? Not go below the belt... the same people constantly talking about were incels??? first thing out there mouths is that we dont know what we want as the consumer??
I want to also say gamers been sympathetic to lay off in the past. this is not the first time wave of lay off have happened , Im 40 and i seen plenty of theses waves.. shit i remember when the 1up video game review crew got cut. I liked that show and did feel bad it was gone.

Imagine taking morality advice from a guy who doesn't cut or comb any of the hair on his head and face. With a novelty monkey toy award statue in the background no less. Gonna take a raincheck on this one pal, would rather get advice from one of my teenage daughters. Bro really goes to work at a high-level software job in a graphic tee. If he had a shred of self-awareness, he would see this his piss poor senior leadership is what cost these kids their jobs.

100%. This video isn't going to transform Ass of Can Whooping Ass of Can Whooping ......err....I mean.....assholes.....into good people. He...err...they...will still be assholes.

Saw this online and its excuse 101 as far as I'm concerned, he was asked in the comments about his colleagues behavior towards gamers and wouldn't answer or blindly supported them, I'm with us gamers on his points, serves them right.

Dude is focused on the wrong things. As consumers, we owe them nothing at all. Personally, I didn't buy the game and I don't attack devs on social media. Thing is, you can't control how people will act to your product, so the only thing you can do is take the hate and try to do better next time, or go do something else.

Maybe I'm an old head for having the belief that the internet was founded on the exchange of freedom of information.

A popular belief around here is that social media was a mistake.
Sure I guess? Personally don't have a take in that.
I can certainly see the problem of injecting your whole personality online and expecting people to have these "common courtesy and rights".
It's defiantly annoying when the governments start sticking it's fingers in with finely vailed excuses of protecting people.

The net wasn't built for that.

Yes people cheer when a company gets killed off. The people cheering are the customers.
They obviously don't want your product. Especially when a vastly superior product came out before under the same title.
Even doubly so when media gets involved and totes "A return to form".

Pathetic. White Knighting for dumb ass devs who go on social media and shit on customers then get all pikachu face when they get called out. Lots of broad brush statements meant to diffuse any accountability and simplify the conflict down to "Hey guys, it's not cool to be mean. Don't cause harrrrm guys that's not cool. You guys are causing harm and being cruel chuds when you could just be heckin good wholesome human beings!"

He's right. Not even a drive-by post, he's 100% correct with everything there.
The fact that this needs to be said is extremely concerning:
The problem with this comment.
This is rarely something that happen out of blue.

Usually they actively say shit like:
I hate white people.
Fuck white people.
Everyone who dont agree with my is a facist etc...
I dont like gamers, i hate them.

Then when people call out on their bullshit, then its an issue?

Its the same situation with Avowed dev, why the fuck would you do that to one of the most controversial people on the planet. Why do you want that kind of attention.
