What setups are folks using at the Slimopolis? This will probably be the next thing I focus on after I'm done w/ the casino and finishing out my class grinding.

Ya and a good wagon healer is Sage Healie w/Omniheal! It was very useful and always kept in the wagon cause its the only party members that learns that spell that I noticed!
I never even thought about using the party members in the wagon to heal till now. Now I can stop neglecting Healie and put him to good use.

The final boss has beaten me up good, two times now. The first time I wasn't prepared and the second I just seemed to have really bad luck. My highest character is lvl 38. I think I may go and grind out some job levels before I come back again. I'm still a little annoyed I didn't unlock the Hero class (Why doesn't Paladin count?) .

Am I underlevelled for the final boss? Is there any essential equipment to be using?
His second form really slowed me down. He buffed up 2 or 3 times and I was left doing about 50-90 damage to him per turn if I was lucky, And sap was ineffective. Also Ashlynn really doesn't seem suited for this fight, At least at lvl 36. She can die easily in one turn.

I had a setup of everyone around level 40, using Hero (
dragon
), Carver (gladiator), Milly (sage) and Nevan (sage). Having two healers helped IMMENSELY, so that one could multi-heal every turn, while the other buffed/debuffed/full-healed when necessary.

The real trick to his last form is
trying to kill both his hands at roughly the same time, so they can't kazing each other
. If things are going horribly, it helped to have a luminary and paladin jump out, so that the paladin could sacrifice themselves with forbearance, while the luminary uses kerplunk dance.

Slime Knight, Flail of Destruction, Metal King Helm, Metal King Armor, best shield you have, Sword of Ramias for buffing, priest maxed, put into your best warrior class.

^^^ Thanks! I suppose I could just look this up, but I'm kinda lazy :), but are you limited to just 1 slime, or do you go in 3v3 like in DQ8?

I finally broke out of my class/casino grinding and got two more pieces of the
legendary gear
. The
Shield of Valora
one really made me wish these games had some type of journal function where you could jot down important clues/locations.

You can use the heal all command from the menu and that will try to use wagon healing first. Good time saver...

Are you referring to the clues that for the dungeon with the shield? If so your party members remember the clues for you.

Also only one of the clues really needs remembering. The other two are pretty easy to keep tabs on.

This game has the best party talk in the series so far.

D'oh... funny that I don't think to use it that much in dungeons. I am so in the habit of using it after talking to NPCs that I forget to use it elsewhere.

I found out by accident. Good surprise, though it makes sense. I think the Super Famicom version had the recall spell which is removed from the remake.

Last night was all sorts of cool... finally got to fight the
castle
and experience all of that nostalgic goodness. Now I have
Terry & Lizzie
and it feels like things are all heading towards the final act.

This has been a really great game so far. While I still think I prefer 5, this trilogy of RPGs is one of the best I've ever played.

Do I really need to win the style contest 3 times to get the carpet? I've failed it 3 times already. I don't want to go hunt down a matching set of gear.

MooMoo

Unfortunately you do. You'll need 180 Style to win round 1, 200 to win round 2 (must be a male character), and 220 to win round 3 (female character), iirc. You should just really look up a FAQ for this part if it's giving you trouble. First time I entered the contest I lost to a fucking zombie D:

I got pretty lost in this game. Apparently I did a shitload of things out of order. That combined with the encounter rate and I'm pretty much blazing through everything right now.

I really think the casinos are lackluster in this game. I don't really like the slot machines, poker has always sucked, and they don't have blackjack anymore (unless I missed this). I also really miss TnT boards, even though a lot of people hate them. I finished DQ5's Starker's board relatively quickly :D They're a nice little diversion, but I think people tend to treat them as chores which sucks away the fun.

I went to the style forge and got all my hero's gear reforged for style and got 227 style points and won the 3 times I needed.

I don't really like the lack of direction in the game. I like exploring and all but not when I get into a random battle every 5 seconds. That makes finding the next place to go a real pain in the ass. I had the same problem with DQ9. I don't really want to be looking at a FAQ after every area either.

MooMoo

Haha congrats. I agree with you for the most part. At least in DQ9, you could control the encounter rate. I find that Padfoot/Holy Waters(?) doesn't do much to mitigate the encounter rate in DQ6. However, I feel like DQ9 was a lot more linear than DQ6. Even though you could do the vignettes out of order in 9, it didn't really matter; I never really felt lost in 9.

But In 6 it's sort of like once you get access to the major modes of transportation, you can unlock 99% of the entire map in both worlds, which sorta causes issues. I couldn't keep track of what place was where and once you gained the ability to
dive under water
things got really annoying because they wouldn't give you a damn map.

Regardless, I still like the game. It's definitely not the strongest in the series, but it's not the weakest either.

Hey guys what are some good places to grind for EXP/Levels? I'm at the end game with everyone being at Lvl. 40+
I'm currently going to spend time mastering the current 16 vocations before settling the characters to a class that befits them and defeating the final boss.

Quick question. I loved dragon warrior 1 and 2 but haven't played anything else in the series. Which one on the ds do you think is more like those 2 games . I want to try to get back into the series when i get my 3Ds

The great thing about the Dragon Quests is the basics stay the same. However, there are changes so that each game is unique. You can't go wrong with any of the DS remakes.

5 is kind of hard to find but a lot of people recommend it. 4 was the one that really got me into the series it's easy to find and pretty cheap. I am currently playing through 6 and I like it a lot. I havent finished yet so really can't comment much.

You have good taste, 2 is one of my favorites.

This whole sequence with following Rod in the cave is making me want to crush my DS into oblivion. Three times now slowly plodding through, having him go off screen and not being able to tell if Ill be hidden when I get him back on screen. KILL KILL KILL.

If you can, try and play Dragon Quest VIII for the PS2, this is the game that got me into the series.

Honestly, all DQ games feel the same despite rather large differences in structure. I'd start with IV and work your way up.

I'm doing the same. Probably 90% of my grinding has been done underwater. My party is up around Lvl. 42, and everyone's still getting mastery credit for what amount to very simple battles.

Just finished the game last night in about 35 hours. Had to grind from level 36 all the way to 42 before I could beat him but it was worth it. I don't mind having to do this kind of grinding when you're right at the end of the game as opposed to against
Murdaw when you're barely 1/3 through the game
. And metal king slimes certainly helped me out thanks to the sands of time.

Today I did most of the post-game stuff but I think I'm just about ready to call it a wrap. I read on FAQs that you need to be minimum
level 60 to beat Nokturnus
and I have zero desire to do the 10-15 hours of non-stop grinding necessary to do that. I also have no desire to fill out the rest of my job classes because I don't care for the job system, grind my slime to beat Slimolopis, the dreamscape stuff, etc.

Overall, I definitely like IV better, and I probably like V better as well, but that shouldn't take away from this being an excellent game. The only bad part is now that I've played through every DQ, I still have the zest for quest and I'll probably be waiting until at least 2014 for DQX. I'll probably give the PS2 DQV remake a try when I get a new comp or maybe play through DQVIII again. If I decide to be a real glutton for punishment I could try playing through DQVII again although I don't know if I could handle that.

Yeah, I'm planning on DQ5 PS2 or Rocket Slime next. I played about 30 minutes of the former just to check it out, and was reminded just how great the music is, and early scenario stuff brought a big smile to my face.

I'm about 60 hours into DQ6 (spent lots of time grinding jobs, which never got old, surprisingly). I have yet to even try slime curling, so I'll probably use that as a diversion for a bit as well before finishing up. Right now I'm doing the
Greedmore
stuff, so it feels like I'm getting close to the end just based on the amount of times people have said the name
Mortamor
. Slimopolis and the Best-Dressed stuff is behind me, so I'm sitting pretty with some really powerful items, although they aren't as useful in this game as they are in other DQs. Not sure how I'll do the Dreamscape stuff, even though I kind of want to.

So, I'm grinding in front of the last dungeon when all of a sudden Carver disappears after a battle. He wasn't in the line-up or Divination at the priest or nothing. Just gone. What the fuck.

He must've got hit by that move that blows party members away. You have to go to Patty's to get them back.

Def. most annoying move in the game IMO.

I've avoided this thread long enough, didn't want to spoil anything. :)

Got slammed by the 3rd form of the final boss last night. Made a decent attempt at reviving my team with the characters in the wagon but I just wasn't truly prepared. Two+ hours of unsaved questing... bye-bye. That surprised me, my crew (Hero and Carver are Dragons/Milly and Ashlynn are Paladins) are all in the low 40's and I had no problems getting there and dealing with the first two forms, so now I'm going to do some more exploring of the final area before I jump into that fight again.

After finally reading the thread now, shame I missed out on having Amos in the party even though I probably wouldn't use him, damn I had no idea about that. Also curious if there's any way to stop that loop with the castle that summoned the demon from getting destroyed... I tried replaying it a few times but didn't seem to find anything that would change the scenario.

Regulus Tera

Romanes Eunt Domus
Got a Victini! :D

I kind of don't wanna train him. I feel like using legendary Pokeymen is cheating.

Oh shit wrong thread. Aww, I haven't had much time to play this. I just got back from my first foray into the world beneath.

Yeah, I noticed what was causing it later on but, I just reset the game. I didn't know where I had to go to get them back.

I just beat the game a few minutes ago. Overall it was a fun game. I thought it had beautiful music and nice graphics but, then I saw the SFC version and I wonder why they bothered remaking it in the DQ7 engine 'cause it looks awesome on SFC. I thought the overall archdemon story was lame but, the individual stories in each town were great, much like DQ9. I think the only things I really didn't like were the high encounter rate and the amount of grinding I had to do to get a couple of measly levels to beat the last guy. And I guess the spellbook turned into a huge mess once you had a few classes mastered but, that's kind of minor.

This just happened to me last night for the first time. Good thing I read this thread prior... otherwise, I might've thought it was a bad bug!

is beloved, despite what anyone might say
Playing this some more... kicked the crap out of Murdaw, but then had a ton of trouble on
Brutus
of all things... managed to survive with only Carver having 36HP. On to the Wayfarer's Pass now.

Apart from some name changes I felt were unnecessary (namely, Carver/Nevan), I am greatly enjoying the translation. Some of the puns were pretty funny and not as constant and corny as they were in some of the other DS DQ releases.

Agreed, was an enjoyable read the entire way through. Party chat <3

Finished it last night, same levels and everything but I went back to the dream world and changed my crew's trades (Hero/Carver both Gladiators, Milly/Ashlynn both Sages) then took my time with the final battle. I must have played sloppy as hell the other day.

Nice ending too, I was wondering if Milly & Terry were going to go back to their parents, tried bringing them there during the game but nothing ever happened. Seeing Ashlynn leave at the end... :(
Now that I'm done with the DQ series finally, it's gonna be a long wait for X. Hmm, maybe I'll replay V.

Now to crack open Tactics Ogre! :)

So about an hour ago - and at about 58 hours - I finished this. I had a really good time, although I obviously had an overpowered party during the homestretch... Lvl. 45+, so the last dungeon was a breeze and the final set of bosses didn't even take anyone out. Got into the yellow health-wise, but was always able to recover since Nevan took priority over everything the majority of the time for healing duties.

The ending was OK, I guess. I preferred the endings in everything from IV-VIII more than this, though, and I didn't really care for the finale music. It seemed almost too serious and the wrong tone given the whimsical nature of most of the game. The final scenes kind of left me empty, so I'm curious to know about the game's alternate ending... might have to go for it.

I will say this, though... hooooooly crap, the animation on the end boss was RIDICULOUS! It's been a while since IV and V, but I think ArtePiazza has outdone themselves this time. I was also shocked by how smooth the spell effects were. They're running at 60fps, right? Really slick-looking.

Finishing this one was bittersweet, since it marks the finale of what has become my favorite RPG series ever... as I've said before, it's easily the most consistently fun and rewarding set of games that I've played, too. While DQ6 wasn't the best one, it is still a strong entry, and a wonderful way to end the trilogy that started on the DS back in 2008.

I finally started and I'm already in love with it. The scene where you exit your house for the first time is amazing! Birds, lens flare and amazing feel-good tunes.

So should I stop playing VI and play the previous ones or am I good to go? Only about an hour into VI and could stop easily.

Quick question

Is leveling too much too early a bad thing? The little I read had something about level caps when developing a class. I don't mean to grind and overlevel in my rpgs but I always somehow do anyway.

There are, but there are also areas where there are no level caps. Although there are minor spoilers w/ area names on this chart, it's a good reference:

http://bit.ly/gOR6Du

Although this isn't much of a spoiler either, but once you go
underwater
, you're good for a long time. To give you an example, my party is Lvl. 46 average, and I'm still getting credit for all my class building there. And since level growth is so slow later on in the game (until you start using a certain item to help take out Metal King Slimes), you probably won't notice it all that much.

Hm, end game dungeon is sort of a bitch =/ I don't mind puzzles, but when the encounter rate is on the high end it's sort of annoying. Does padfoot even work? It must decrease encounter rates by .0000001% because it never seems to make a difference. I wanted to push through and finish the game today, but looks like that'll have to wait another 2 weeks until Spring Break. I also ordered DQ4 for 13 green ones! So that should hold me over the initial 3DS launch lineup drought.

Overall, I felt like this game had a lot less worthwhile distractions from the main storyline. I haven't touched Slimopolis, the beauty pageant thing is lameeee, Slippin' Slime is okay, and I have never really cared for slots. Poker is my favorite, but they tend to cheat a lot, which makes doubling up hard. The casinos themselves are on the smaller side when compared to DQ5, which always made them seem so lively and extravagant. I still miss TnT boards. I could see why people hate them but my nostalgia glasses make me remember how much fun I had with them in DQ3 and I beat that DQ5 Starker's board pretty quickly.

I love the job system though, which scales back from DQ9's grindy nature. I think the animation in this game is definitely a step up from DQ5. Little touches like lightning flashing through windows or midgame spoiler
seeing Terry fight that dragon
was great. The story line is good enough to make me want to push forward and the little nods to the previous entries are great (I remember reading a bookshelf and it had a journal entry from DQ5 talking about how the main character was conflicted about who to marry). Once again, party chat is an awesome feature, so much so that I sort of wish the game had an auto-party chat feature so that I wouldn't have to manually click B a bunch of times after talking to each NPC. I think this game is one of the few RPGs where I actually want to talk to NPCs, which is great in itself. And I'm also glad to see the only time I had to grind was early game and late game. And even though I'm not officially done with the game, I do have to say this is a great game.
