Dragon Quest 7: Fragments of the Forgotten Past |OT| Roman numerals are hard

I'm assuming like other DQs, this remake utilizes some sort of enmity/hate/aggro mechanic? Where the more you are towards the top of the party, you have greater chance of getting hit?

Wow, that's a biiiig classes list, and as completionist I'll have to master them all!

I kinda like how this game like all DQs starts off really basic and simple, and then snowballs into more and more variety later on.

I mean, at first it takes ages to unlock even the most simple magic. When I first got into into DQ, that really turned me off initially, but later on they really open up, especially DQIX with just a massive amount of stuff to do.

At roughly what hour did you get to Alltrades? I can't wait to get there myself. My hero is definitely getting the sheep costume, no question!

This game is great so far! I never realized the slow beginning was an artistic choice because of the setting. That makes a lot more sense.

Also, is it just me or are the "Weak 3D" and "Strong 3D" options reversed?? Also, which one do you guys prefer?

Should I use my seed of magic on Maribel? I'm worried that she's not a permanent party member because she wasn't in any of the video previews that I saw.

She definitely is. If the game lets you use a seed on someone, they're a permanent party member. Also she'll be your primary offensive magic user for the start of the game as far as I can tell.

Do the Dragon Quest games have a continuous story? Or is it like FF where each game has it's own story and universe?

I've never played a Dragon Quest game but I'm itching to play a jrpg

I've become the worst collector ever =( Just can't stand label damage. I hope Nintendo gets rid of all the damn holes in their cases for NX titles.

Just started playing haven't even gotten on the boat. Maybe this time I'll finish the game. I ended up getting lost 20+ hours in on the original and never went back. BTW the game is sold out in my area. Hope this is good news for the series.

It's like Final Fantasy where each game has its own universe but common elements. So far this is a great entry of a little more drawn out than other ones I've played, so just be expecting that.

Honestly I think the best starting point is VIII or IX. VIII comes out on 3DS next year!

1-3 and 4-6 are trilogies but can be played as stand alone titles. They connect but aren't necessary to play in order, but if you're paying attention it does increase the enjoyment of them. 7-9 aren't trilogies and nothing about them are connected.

Every DQ can be enjoyed on its own.

Ugh this is so sharp and the colors really pop on the OG 3DS. I compared it with my IPS N3DSXL and it's really no contest. Loving the game so far.

DQ8 has a part where you have to power up an ancient ship. Instead of getting the ship you have to do all kinds of drawn out crap before you can use it. In no way is DQ7r more drawn out than 8. The only "drawn out" part of the remake is the intro, which is necessary for build up.

DQ7r and 8 are equally gfood entries for a new player.

So how is this game for beginners to the series? The only DQ games I've ever played were the GBA remakes of I and II...

I'm familiar with RPGs, but just never got into this franchise. But I hear this one is huge.

good for beginners.. good for anyone who wants a good JRPG

every DQ game is good for beginners imo, the mechanics never really change as a drastically as they do in FF games for instance

Thanks!!

Might pick this up then :D

Yay, first battle at 2:30 of game time. Mind, I left my 3DS sitting for at least half an hour during a nap and I definitely took my sweet time talking to people and exploring everywhere I could.

I picked up 4 copies. 2 from Amazon and 2 from Best Buy. I only buy multiple copies of dragon quest and naughty dog games. I will do the same for dq8 and dq11 when it comes out! Can't wait to dig into this tonight!

Goodbye, weekend!

Did my part and bought it! Not sure when I'll have time to play though. I'm particularly excited about seeing what they did to the casino.. I spent so many hours in that in the PS1 version.

Edit: Rocket Slime was so good on DS

Just beat first island. So good. The graphics overhaul is giving me flashbacks to when I played VIII for the first time and was just in awe. Having yours and the main characters you meet have such distinct looks really adds to the game and story. I love old school sprites DQ but I am glad we now have DQ where Toriyama's style is fully realized. So ready for XI...

I clocked in two hours and I'm absolutely nowhere because I love talking to NPCs. Once Kiefer joined up, most of them have something slightly different to say. Doing rounds and talking to everyone again.

Love this game to death.

Was well worth the wait!

Looks to be sold out on Amazon too. I imagine the print run isn't too high, but hopefully this series finally gets the recognition and sales it deserves.

What's the cheapest place to get a 3DS? It's probably too much to pay for one game but this thread is really making me want it.

If I don't get a 3DS, I may have to just play the original PS1 game again.

Probably Craigslist or used at GS or something. They don't do markdowns from MSRP on the systems very often

A 2DS is the absolute cheapest route, but if you can afford it I really would recommend the 'New' regular 3DS or XL. It's not worth saving the $35 or whatever to get an old XL imo

If you have targets in your area I fou d my N3ds super Mario land bun5le for $150. That was a week and half ago they are still out there.

Finally, battles! Oh and the Style stat makes a return! Wonder how that'll play into things?

That early backtracking and pointlessly boring saintly item collection stuff really sucked! No wonder people were saying the opening hour was a bad one.

You can get the original 3ds on Amazon for 106. If you know Japanese there's also the option of playing the mobile version which is pretty good.

It was but there are those warp items... I think in a second play I would find the first hour annoying.

The music is great.

Depends where you are. I'll guess you're in America.

If you don't care about 3D, the 2DS is $80 with a game now as a standard price.

Whoops... this isn't Cold Steel so sneaking up on baddies from behind doesn't guarantee an advantage! Gotta keep my head together here an not mix up games!

Ya I abused the chimera wings but Estard wasn't a warp location so ya couldn't avoid running to there. Not feeling alot of the music either, like the save jingle sounds really bad this time around. Menus also feel alil less "snappy" than in other DQs I've played. Like when transferring items around there's a noticeable pause.

Got my copy of the game, saved $8 thanks to a friend letting me use his Best Buy gamer club discount. Gonna be a fun weekend, whoo. I'm going to use the quick guide on the Nintendo's site so I can get a good head start.

Makes me happy seeing a lot of new gamers for DQ. I expect Nintendo to label this a success, even with small first print run. I'm hoping the series interests the casual crowd eventually too. I expect DQVIII 3DS when released will have phenomenal sales, but this DQVII game should make new DQ fans

Does buying physical get you anything extra? I want to get it off Amazon but since it's sold out i might just go digital.
