I was just thinking about the 3DS emulation thread - this game would probably look incredible upscaled.

The NX dock will let you play all your DS/3DS games upscaled to HD

I'm really digging this version of the game. I love the music so far, don't feel like being MIDI hurts it at all/

Save scumming? Start by buying about 50 tokens. Use one of the low level games to get to around 200-500 tokens, then save your game and use the blue slot machine that someone is already on. The angle is a little tricky, but it is possible. Keep playing and just reload your save if you run out of Tokens until you hit a fairly significant jackpot, save, repeat.

This. I got a 30 tokens, built them up a bit with poker, before moving onto the slots at around 100 tokens. Used the green slots until I had around 250, then went to the far right slot. It is easier to use it if you open the menu and hit the examine command. That way you don't accidentally talk to the guy.

Casino Log 2:

Hit my first 777 jackpot. Up to 4749 tokens now. About a third of the way to my goal of 15000.

4 islands down and is the whole game gonna be "do place then immediately go do exact same place again" until the endgame? Was hoping that cycle would've broken by now.

Something about the font in this game, or the way it scrolls, hurts my eyes.

Yeah, it's kind of hard to look at. I wish there was an instant text option instead of the scrolling.

And man, the way to Alltrades is an uphill battle. I thought I could finally test a few costumes before going to bed,
but no... More dungeon
. They make you really earn it.

It's weird, I've been playing this game so hard, the job system is starting to feel like the reward for "beating" the game, even though it still goes on for many hours after that point. But it definitely feels like a big halfway point.

To be honest, I actually like that. It feels like a big thing. Especially after
taking all your spells and abilities away for a few hours
. It feels a bit like torture sometimes, but I have to respect that slow burn with a big payoff.

So MIDI. I like it overall, but some of the instrumentation kind of bothers me. The trumpet sound kind of reminds me of GBA-era Pokemon games... just sounds a little too HONKy.

Why did they remove the sword that makes a "T"...?
I've been wondering about that since Dragon Quest IX. It seems to only be with Nintendo published DQs as the SE published Dragon Quest Heroes and Builders both use the sword as a T.

Maybe something to do with trademarks?

I'd use some on Meribel just the same. More MP early on is handy and she's the best mage as I recall.
Her spells outside of SAP aren't super useful. Personally I prefer having a bit more for Heal on the hero. But yeah generally it's best to min/max this kind of thing and choose specializations, and then assign seeds accordingly.

Maribel learns heal too.

God damn Alltrades Abbey...

I literally deliberated for 30 mins on what vocation I'd have my characters choose then that turns out to be a trap...

...Then the revelation that you no longer have your skills or abilities makes it a really tough bit of gameplay considering how much you go through before getting them back (also, my first true party wipe in the game). At least now I can sweep hordes with Bang and Ruff's wolf abilities now. Still not finished with it though.

Completing the desert island was so satisfying! I expected Maribel to be a lot more chatty though.

Also the bookshelves in this have been fun. Cuthbert's Adventure, the ones in Pilgrim's Perdition (heh heh), and "A Thug's Life" have been the best thus far.

But it's pretty late, level 10 is quite a ways into the game. Not much later at level 12 the Hero gets Midheal... which is way more useful by that point.

I think it's still useful though.

She seems to have an higher action priority, so if you're in a pinch, need to get a heal off and can't just use an item - she's your girl. Just because she's more likely to get it off, where as sometimes the MC ends up taking his turn after the boss so they could die in the process.

Heal is still useful for a long time after learning midheal. Wasting one of the hero's turns to heal in battle is not worth the boost in healing that midheal provides IMO. So far I've only used it outside of battle.

Falrod's story was one of my favorites in the original game and still is today. :)
Zebbot's story is so touching. :( I'm so happy that they kept it intact in the remake.

The next story
(which should be the story of the Deja tribe, I believe)
is another one of my favorites. I can't wait to start that one. :)

By that point I'd rather just load her up with herbs, they're cheap and I won't run out of precious sap MP. Or that rock once you get to Alltrades... just spam that every single turn during boss battles.

Do you need more than one of a single type of monster heart? I have about 7 slime hearts. I assume I can use them for something later?
You have to place the monster heart into the inventory of the party member you wish to change to that monster class. So you need as many hearts as you have party members whom you would like to be that monster at the same time.

Mad as fuck at the game.

Kiefer.

He was my favorite, boosted him like crazy, proud warrior with a lance.... Fuck that man.

I was wondering why I hadn't seen any class artwork for him. :/

Is it worth using a guide to make sure I get all the tiny medals, or would you recommend going through blind? I've played the first couple hours blind so far, but I've heard some of those are hard to find and/or missable. Sorry this is the 2nd time I've asked this kind of question, but I keep going back and forth.

Liking the game so far. I'm at the first
past segment at the mine

When abouts can you use monster classes? I don't even have normal vocations unlocked yet.

Made it up through Emberdale... so far, so good! It's really nice to just pick the game up a little bit every day and make some progress. I think the vignette style is going to be really well suited for that style of play.

You can use all Vocations you have unlocked including any Monster Hearts you may have at the time as soon as you finish the Alltrades Abbey quest line.

Thanks! I'm still 9 or 10 hours a way going by some posts in here.

Can you permanently screw up vocations by the way? Like do you have to pick and choose what abilities you want or do you just have them as long as that vocation is equipped?

Casino Log 3:

My goal of 15000 tokens has been reached. It is to late to continue onward this evening, so I shall continue to play the slots some more to see if I can win more.

Class levels are linear. It's basically impossible to fuck up. You can pick inefficiebt paths, but everything will always be unlockable.

Sometimes they're invisible, most often in wells or at gravesites so it doesn't hurt to look them up. I wouldn't bother until you actually unlock the medal king though and there's no real need to ever look ahead unless you hate backtracking since I believe there's excess medals so even if some are missable you shouldn't get too screwed over.

I just remembered something. I forgot about the
Verdham
story (another favorite of mine) so I guess I'm not going to see
the Deja tribe
just yet. :p

I love how consistent the quality of the vignettes in this game are. The only one I didn't care too much for in the original game was probably the last one.

Am I misunderstanding this or do I really need to put items into a character's individual inventory for me to be able to compare stuff on their equip screen? Seems super annoyin'.

Yeah, I feel that this game was made to be played like that. I can't think of any game that is more suited for that kind of play style than this one.

Of course this game is also really fun to play in long sessions as well. :)

I think I heard Nintendo thought it looked too childish.

I think they need to stuff it.

Is there anyway to get the game to remember what action I did last time / Or anyway for me to hold down a button to automatically pick what I did last time for all characters?

Just hit transfer and hover over the characters name. You don;t need to actually place it into someones inventory unless you want to equip it. It will give you a prompt to equip it as soon as you lace it in their inventory so you don't need to back out and go to a different menu.

Some classes are slower than others.

There's info here for the JP version, (try google translate) column 4 has the cumulative battles needed to reach each level... for example Thief :
Code:

Mage:
Code:

So you need 80 battles to master Mage but only 69 to do Thief.

Edit: and Sailor takes 83 battles.

Unfortunately the rates have been changed since the PS1 version so you can't use those. Most of the basic classes have had their requirements cut in half.

There is a level location cap, so for instance at my current location only Ruff is leveling his class at 21 and my others not at all at 23 so somewhere between 22-23 I will stop being able to class level in this area.

this goes on until the last leg of the game

which is still sizable but a small part of this humongous gam

It's uh... really easy to accidentally buy things in shops. As many menus as this game makes me go though it's not going to give me "Are you shure you want to purchase yes/no?"

Loving the game in general but between that and menu slowness I'm like plz god patch this. Was the JP game like this?

Ok, I posted on the logo earlier, but I dug up the source on where the T change was explained:

Q: I have one silly question and this will be the last question. What do you think about the fact that Nintendo changed the T in Dragon Quest from a sword to a T because I don't like it in the logo for the American version?

noriyoshi fujimoto, producer: That's actually Nintendo's decision.

YH: Some people said that what they heard from Nintendo was that having the sword as a T was a little childish.
I guess SE's willing to try any stupid thing to make the series take off in NA, but I really, REALLY doubt the sword was that off putting, and it was part of the charm and a reason returning to the original name was nice, so to turn around and axe it at random beyond the Sword game is kind of frustrating.

Finally able to spend some time with this. I made it to the Dharma Temple in the original (played it about a year ago for the first time), and the remake news caused me to wait a bit to play it.

Finished up Balloymalloy (past), and it's as good as I remember. The little improvements are definitely a nice touch. Gonna finally beat this damn game, it's the only main line one that came stateside that I've not finished.
