Dragon Quest 7: Fragments of the Forgotten Past |OT| Roman numerals are hard

Huh, they changed the first unwinnable fight I think. The sidekicks no longer seem finite HP and the main guy uses desperate attacks immediately instead of when he is alone. I guess they wanted to make sure people knew you couldn't win.

Holy shit, those rhinoceros enemies -
They just throw your party members out of battle!

This game has some serious Shin Megami Tensei stuff going on. Buffing / debuffing as well. It really does turn based combat right, and without any gimmicks either.

You can backup save files through several different means.

I need to check that out, because losing a 100+ hours due to some save data corruption is my personal nightmare.

Taking a half day break from DQVII today. Trying not to burn myself out too much.

Yeah, I've ruined some games for myself by doing that! Definitely won't be continuing at this rate. After Alltrades I'll hit the brakes and just casually grind jobs for a while!

For now, I'm gonna hit up the PS4. No use in starting my larger games though (DS2/DS3/DOOM) since I haven't the time so a causal play of GTA 5 it is! :)

I barely played over the weekend, I feel like the discussion in this thread has already passed me by.

I only just reached the first battle.

I'm an unemployed loser who has the luxury of being able to play ten hours a day, so don't judge by me. Even within the last few pages, we've had other newcomers posting their "time to first battle" and people are generally good at tagging spoilers, so I hope you won't get discouraged and quit a great game before it really begins.

I've spent the morning doing some backtracking for Mini Medals I missed, which others may have missed also - Emberdale (Present):
Button Exchange for the little boy beside the Church
and Alltrades Abbey (Past):
Examine behind the Northeast Grave in the Graveyard in the Cliffside Town halfway back to the Abbey.
You don't want to have to backtrack on that second one, it is a pain in the rear, so read it if you're at the point where something happened in the Abbey that let you down.

Every other Medal has been in a Location You're Going To Look (Barrel, Pot, Chest, Dresser, etcetera), those two I missed out on for some reason and was checking against a list from the PSOne version.

I'll definitely keep playing, I just might not follow the thread.

The sidekicks do have finite HP, but yeah it's brutal.

I won't judge you. Back in my HS days, use to take off 3-4 days to play DQ games. I didn't miss much as I got homework from buds and had high grades to compensate for playing hooky, but DQ was worth it. Played 18 hours per day until I finished the game.

I adore Maribel as I'm reading her party chats. Thought she was annoying at first but immediately warmed up to her, if you dont read the party chats you miss out on a lot of her charm.

Does she like the MC? She treats the dude like total trash but at the same time gives off this feeling like she depends on him.

picked it up yesterday, an hour and fifteen minutes til my first battle i thought the game was bugged and monsters simply werent appearing or something.
just beat the crab and maeve walked up
. excited to see whats coming, im completely blind in this game never saw anything from it or know what to expect

how do you prevent dazzle ?

Unwinnable fights because of this. Wasted 4 hours trying that shitty boss fight.
Use Medicinal Herbs/Salvation Stone/Staff of Salvation to heal and MP for Offensive Spells if you want to go that way.

Dazzle does wear off, but it really sucks when an enemy spams it because all debuffs like that have two levels of strength. One cast is a light level that's easier to shake off, but a second hit and that character might as well have stayed home. I'm not sure if there's any way to prevent it or cure it, especially nothing early in the game.

I just end up using offensive magic or items that cast spells (maybe some abilities may ignore dazzle but definitely not before classes open up). I haven't yet found any equipment, magic, or abilities to prevent or cure dazzle status.

Still on Alltrades past but (story spoiler)
I really feel for Nev. He's an unfriendly, uncharitable guy but he's spent his whole life taking care of his elder sister and in comes foppish, shady guy who is intent on pushing him away from her and replacing him, using the masculine charm and access to goods that Zev just can't compete with. Moreover, no one gives a damn how Zev feels. Eustace treats him like a rival openly and Nava is too precious and self righteous to put up with Zev's insecurity and jealousy and can't even be honest with him about Eustace. Then when he 'dies' Eustace uses it as an opportunity to date Nava. She is thrilled. Not sure how it's going to end, but quite icky so far.

Sorry if this has already been asked but am I the only one who feels their Hero is leveling up kind of slow? Last night I completed Bally Molloy (what a wonderful and beautifully melancholy little story) and after defeating Crabble Rouser Kiefer and Maribel leveled up to 9 but my hero is still at level 8 and Nintendo's quick start guide recommended being at level 10 before leaving the tower, guess I'm not grinding enough? Plus after beating the tower the monsters all disappeared so guess I'll have to level up at the start of the next mission.

Well here's my problem.

Little Spoiler for the abbey regarding why I can't win.

My abilities have been taken away so I'm just a glorified punching bag.

I can't heal enough, I can't do any damage, and it's been going on for 4 hours.

:/

He does start leveling slower. But they aren't steady. I had ruff at 6-7 or so iirc and then suddenly he was within a couple levels of everyone.

Please help me with the dazzle situation.

Tired of redoing the shitty dungeon over and over.

It's the dungeon of descent. Eustace and Fingers are with me.

They're useless.

Pls halp.

That should be more due to exp curve being exponential than variances in exp required per level for each character.

That is, the 100 extra experience it might take to get to level 3 doesn't really count for much when you need 10,000 extra experience to reach level 20. Similarly, the point where you get Ruff you can have a relatively massive gulf in total experience (say 10,000) but that amount is relatively small as you work your way up the exp curve (say, where 10,000 buys you just one level).

I'm pulling numbers out of the air here but the effect is the same in game, just with different values.

Those bosses are pretty tough. Just try to focus on one enemy. Do you have that rock yet? That helps a lot...

Kiefer might be one of my favorite DQ characters.
He felt like the actual protagonist of the game and I got pissed when he left the group. But finding his tomb immediately after was heartbreaking. I hope there is a twist and that he is not dead.

Just beat the first boss earlier today. I am so behind haha. The music is great, would like to have the orchestral music but its a big hassle. Still sounds good though

(Vague Statement) Well...
DQ tends more towards the bittersweet than the sweet in regards to stuff like that.

Is there
a point of no return until you complete the Egypt area
like is the PS1 version? Wondering how I should set my party up if so.

I thought there was some way to go back. In any case, I'd recommend just putting all your money and the bank and giving it your best. If you fail, you're not losing much.

That section is way longer than it needs to be in my opinion. Good luck and make use of the salvation rock or whatever the hell it's called to get free heals.

The Alltrades music is really good. Sounds a bit odd at first, but it feels mysterious and haunting. Really more fitting the original title of "dharma temple" rather than an "abbey".

Some classes are slower than others.

There's info here for the JP version, (try google translate) column 4 has the cumulative battles needed to reach each level... for example Thief :

So you need 80 battles to master Mage but only 69 to do Thief.

Edit: and Sailor takes 83 battles.

Unfortunately the rates have been changed since the PS1 version so you can't use those. Most of the basic classes have had their requirements cut in half.

Oh, so leveling a job is only dependent on the number of battles and not related to exp? So I could cheese the system by going to a starting area and just blast through the low level enemies?

Finally got some time in last night. I am only a few hours in and just did the green crystal thing. I asked this a long time ago, but is there any point where I can possibly miss anything? Or will I always be able to go and collect everything in the world?

E: Oh and I have to say, I love that I can grind one handed. The L-button being an action button is amazingly useful.

Yes and no. It's entirely dependent on battles won, but areas have level caps, so after your character reaches that certain level you won't gain class exp there any more. The slime forest tablet has a cap of 20, so if your characters are under 20 - which they very likely are if you're around the abbey part of the story - you could grind classes there for almost as long as you like since slimes only give 2exp each.

Ah, I see, thanks!

Haven't got nearly as far as some of you. Man the draw distance and pop up in the overworld is straight up shit in this game.

The overworld is easily the ugliest part of the game. It's pretty shocking and looks like an early DS title. Enemies, their animations and some of the battle backgrounds look very good, though.

I use the shoulder buttons for battles all the time! Since I have a grip for my XL it's really convenient to actually hold the system in one hand. For a game that's pretty low on convenience, it's a surprisingly nice addition.

I haven't really been able to fully enjoy a jrpg for a very long time now. The two last times I tried this was with Ni no kuni & Bravely Default. I played them for a couple of hours at first but then got tired and lost interest. I think it is often due to the not so engaging gameplay mechanics, and not so much an issue with the story.

I haven't really played a Dragon Quest game before, as I guess Heroes does not count, but everyone here seems to praise them highly. So I am wondering if it would be worth giving this game a chance in hope that it won't end like the others, or if I should just admit to myself that jrpg's might not be my thing anymore (used to love the old FF games on SNES & PS1)?

DQ is more about story than gameplay mechanics. You have to keep that in mind. You might be better off with something like SMT:Nocturne.

But then again the FF series had lousy gameplay mechanics (everything is very easy and doesn't require much strategy) and you say you loved them.

Oh yeah, that sucks. I stocked up on medicinal herbs (plus a ygg leaf in case) and just played defense and healing, taking shots when I could with whoever was free to do so. It also helps to have the boomerang (since you have a chance to hit maybe one of them when dazzled) and the wizard's rod if you played the matching game at the casino.

In general, equipment that have effects like increased evasion or protection against spells or breath damage are pretty important or at least very useful in this game and are good to have on hand.

The difference being that I loved them back then, not sure it would be the same today. But thanks, I'll try and keep that in mind. Do you think it is possible to go through the story somewhat fast while playing it casually with this version of DQ7? Or will it still require a lot of grinding and backtracking?

Roughly how far into the game is
the Haven
open? I'm at
Ballymalloy
and about to go to the tower, and I want to get those download tablets before they disappear on the 30th.

im going to try not to grind playing, i dont know how difficulty will curve and i dont wanna make it to easy for myself, i rather like having to use every item to survive.
got the boat and went back to the first island lvl 7
, game is almost always kinda charming looking, until i exit a level and the hub world camera isnt looking at my charactor at all and is hung up on some smudge texture, my r button is broke so sometimes things get wacky trying to turn the camera only with L, hopefully my ribbon comes soon and i can fix it so i can keep things in better looking places

Finally stopped lazying around and went to buy the game. Good thing I did not wait longer because I think it was the last copy left. The game looks tons better than I expected from the screenshots from what I played. Still, I think I won't be playing through it right away and will wait for sometime in the future while I'm on holidays or something so I can enjoy it at my own pace.
