Dragon Quest 7: Fragments of the Forgotten Past |OT| Roman numerals are hard

Does this game features easy mode like most modern J-RPG (like Bravely Default/Second)?
This is a "No, but..." answer. None of the Dragon Quest games feature anything too terribly difficult during the main story although you may run into a gear-, strategy-, or level- check boss at some point. You can easily make the game a cakewalk by maintaining your characters at a slightly higher level than a guide or walkthrough recommends or by working hard to get an advanced weapon "earlier" than the game would normally allow you to find an equivalent item in a shop or treasure chest. For example there are Casino/game prizes, Alchemy combinations (available in some titles), or sidequest rewards. In some of the games you can even free roam to certain areas before the story directs you there and pick up powerful items if you can handle the monsters or shop prices.

You may have to use a little bit of strategy from time to time and some people do like going through these games as lowly leveled as possible for the extra challenge. Essentially, this is a game that has a scaling difficulty level which depends on how you choose to play it. Kind of old school, but that's a large part of the attraction of Dragon Quest to many folks, I think.

I finally scrounged up the money to purchase this despite being down on my luck, and it's not even available on amazon.ca currently. Does anyone have any information on this? Was it super limited? Is it not being physically released in Canada like Gravity Rush HD?

I see, thank you! :)

It took a long time (dumping both NA and JP ROMs, decrypting, figuring out how to replace and rebuild, etc.), but I managed to pull off the music replacement. I can confirm it does work just fine.
That's exciting. Looks like it's time to install homebrew on one of my three 3DS's. Should I get a physical copy of the game or the eshop version if I wanted to do this?

Versions, you need both, the Japanese and the English version to do this. Should be possible with both, physical and eshop versions.

Oh, I knew the shop menus looked weird. I also agree with the font complaints. Not only it doesn't look good in a 3DS screen, but it also makes the menus seem cheap.

Oh forget that then. I'm not spending $40 just to get the nicer music. I wonder if the file sizes are much different, because of it though.

Edit: And with the shop item pictures being gone too it seems it'd make more sense to send the English text to the Japanese copy, than the Japanese music to the English copy, granted that'd be a ton more work.

Finally something to spend my eShop money on. Everything I end up wanting lately on a Nintendo console keeps getting delayed.

Don't know if I should order on eshop or go to wal mart at midnight and harass them until they give me a copy from the back or just wait until the daytime

I don't have a problem with going digital on everything I can, but I knew that I was going to buy the physical version of this game the moment it was announced. SD corruption is real, it happened to me once. I don't mind losing my progress in Picross or Kirby... but losing 90 hours of playing this game, yikes. No, thank you. I feel much safer with the physical version, which is also why I buy all my Pokémon games on carts.

Apparently the decision was not based on file size, in fact the Japanese and the English release are almost identical in file size.
Don't worry, the MIDI sounds fine! I bet 90% of the people here (me included) wouldn't even notice that it's MIDI unless they compare it directly.

Copying the English text in the Japanese might not be possible. If I remember correctly the Japanese version has the names of the speaker in front of each sentence, while the English has a little box with the name above the main box (a welcome change!). So I guess it would be impossible to just brute force the English text into the Japanese version.

My copy has just arrived (a day early!) cannot wait to start playing it later today.

This will be the first Dragon Quest game I've played and really looking forward to getting my teeth stuck in a long JRPG!

A lot of the time I play handheld RPGs with the sound-off.

But Dragon Quest has been an exception in the past.

In typical Best Buy fashion, mine will probably ship a few hours before the clocks turn Friday. It's going to be a full weekend though, having both this game and a new iPhone to play with.

I got my copy early.

I've just finished up with the first dungeon, so I'm about two, nearly three hours in. I'm loving the game so far, I've been stopping to smell the roses talking to every npc, DQ is still just so gosh darn charming.

One thing about the game I would say is keep the 3d off. The extra clarity just makes the game look more aliased and a little hard on the eyes.

had to do the same thing on the new Monster Hunter. Sadly, 3D in the way it is incorporated on 3DS is too much of a sacrifice on the visuals in a lot of more complex looking games.

On top of that, I was experiencing some dropped frames with 3D that didn't happen with it off. So off for me, but I don't think this is a game that needs it, so that's okay.

Yeah I noticed that in battles with multiple monsters. The implementation is an afterthought anyway given that during gameplay the camera is no different from the original game (or for that matter the DS games).

Another thing I might add: the music sounds great, I'm not bothered by the sampled versions of Sugiyama's score as outside of VIII it's what I'm accustomed to.

DQVII is getting a physical release in Canada. No idea why Amazon doesn't have it, but I have it pre-ordered at my local EB Games. I recommend you go to the closest EB, or if you prefer to order online, Best buy.ca has it: http://www.bestbuy.ca/en-CA/product...spx?path=1d4c6d3b43b1aa2ab452d306f19e7bc3en02

Someone has the game early, and is comparing it to their Japanese version. Shops have been completely changed, and for the worse.

Left is localized, right is original JP release.
Yeah, I noticed that too. The item images aren't completely gone, though, because you can still see them in the inventory menus. Clearly they had to expand the shop menu horizontally. But there's still enough room for the images, so there must be a technical reason for the removal.

MHG looks HORRIBLE in 3D. I don't know what they did to manage that, especially with MH4U looking so good in 3D.

The overall quality of this port look really average... the music and now the shop menu, what next ?

I hope they did a great job with the translation. I hope that's not next. I really love the translation of the original. They better not have put in a ton of accents.

the main character in dq games doesn't have a standard name, right?

Sometimes they do. In this case, they've decided that the hero's official English name is Auster. In Japanese, even the original version, they used Arusu as the name.

There are accents, but it's not overboard.

How did so many people get this so early? Everyone around here is like "Nah, that comes out Friday." :(

This week, I had several Tuesday movie releases show up on Monday, and now my DQ7 shipment is scheduled to show up today. I don't know what's going on at Amazon, but I'm not complaining.

Got my copy a day earlier than expected. Sadly I have to go to this company dinner, otherwise I'd be spending the evening playing this
